I had a good time here, but it's just too expensive at $90 to get in, $20 to park, and food that isn't cheap, either. The music program seems enough to satisfy even the pickiest of people (4 stages packed with different musicians), but other aspects of the "New Orleans experience" were lacking. They only had three cooking demonstrations for the entire day, and the one I wanted to go to on making jambalaya was canceled for no apparent reason. And they were missing New Orleans drinks: Nowhere to be had were hurricanes, mint juleps, sazeracs, cafe au lait (coffee). There was little informative about Mardi Gras culture and the bathroom situation was wanting: in the afternoon those portable hand washing stations lacked water and hand towels. I just think to myself there's a lot on offer in San Diego that's free - like Lunar New Year Festivals, which I went to earlier in the year. Completely free to go and sometimes free parking, as well, so if you're going to pay $90 for Gator by the Bay it better be a damn good experience all around. read more

We paid $80 each to enter Gator, and nothing was included in this crazy admission fee.You'd think they could at least include a t-shirt or commemorative cup for $80 pp. Otherwise we mostly felt like we paid way too much to get into a street fair with overpriced food and alcohol. The saving grace is that had great music, and it wasn't over crowded. Most of the people working there were volunteers, and they were all helpful, but come on man. When you charge that much, at least pay the people that are working. Also, has anyone reading this ever tried to peel crawfish? 5 minutes per, and the results was meat the size of a small pincher bug. If we go again (a tip if you haven't ever gone) we will bring lawn chairs, as many others did. There's really no place to sit, and no tables to eat on. read more

We go every year. The music and food is amazing. This year the set up was horrible. It was a very hot day and there was very little shade. We used to sit under the trees to cool off but this time every single shaded area was fenced off! Why would anyone,in their right mind, do that?!! It was like a bunch of ants searching for sugar. It was my first time attending this 4-day festival this year! I came here after celebrating Mother's day, so there were a few hours left before it ended on Sunday. There are two entrances, so it was a bit confusing on where to meet my friend at. There were quite a few stages with bands playing Blues, Swing, Country, Jazz, etc. You'll have to refer to the schedule to see what kind of music they are playing on certain days/stages. The crowd is a bit older and it seems really fun if you're with a group or know how to dance to that type of music. This event is kid-friendly as well, so there were a few free activities where we could decorate hats out of paper bags or get our faces painted. Food is not included in the price of admission, so we ended up buying a couple of items to share. We decided to share the gator bites sandwich from Pearson's Louisiana Cajun Food, which also came with a side of fries. The sandwich was pretty interesting, but some pieces were a bit chewy. The fries were crispy and very flavorful! I also got a plate combo from Flavors of East Africa. The combo plate was filling and delicious- I've had their food before at other festivals and their actual restaurant before. It's nice that they also let you try the items before you buy anything. There were other food options like shrimps, corn, barbecue, and even Asian food if you had a specific craving. read more

I'm surprised there are so many bad reviews. My friends and I make a point of attending this event every year and we LOVE it. The music is amazing, and the vibe is really relaxed. It never seems really crowded like some events. All ages, which is nice. We always have so much fun dancing and hanging out in this beautiful spot on the bay. Yes, it's pricey, but that's what you pay to hear a line up of impressive musicians. And kids 17 and under are free, so I don't know why people are complaining about it being too expensive for a family. read more

We'd gone once before in 2019 which was great fun! We bought tickets for 2020 and - COVID. The good news is that they honored our 2020 passes! Thank goodness because I would've hated to miss the music! The food this year was just ok. There were not as many offerings as year's past. We had the boiled crawfish first. They were well seasoned! We went to a food truck and ordered the jambalaya and Cajun chicken pasta. Each serving was small, yet cost $20.00 each. The jambalaya was too salty and the Pasta was cold. I'm sooooo glad the music was amazing because I danced until my legs were numb! We then found barbecue chicken nachos that saved our culinary experience! As we devoured the nachos, Mr. Sipp from Mississippi prepared to take the stage. When I tell you my soul needed this live music!!!! The dance floor was packed during his set! Loved it! I would have only given three stars, but Mr. Sipp took it up a notch. The price of entry was way too expensive considering there was not even a refill station for water. She is now going on 11 and she has a younger sister who is now 4 and she loves it just as Bella did when she was little. Yes, tickets and parking are expensive, but having a Louisiana experience in San Diego is worth it to me. This is a festival for an older crowd, and especially for dancing couples. Food is good and varied- I saw a few veggie options, which was great. The food is expensive, but a lot of it is slow cooked and the seafood brought from Louisiana. What do you expect? The music is fabulous if you're into Zydeco, blues, and swing. My mum and I have been twice and we had a good time! read more

Despite not sourcing from any of our amazing local breweries (boo, hiss), I was glad to see that they had included LongHammer IPA as one of their RedHook choices since I have enjoyed LongHammer at my local pool hall on many occasions. Unfortunately, the LongHammer that they were selling at the festival didn't taste anywhere near as good as the LongHammer I've had many times before. I was quite disappointed in the flavor, and it wasn't even consistent from station to station.. Gator by the Bay is a great event in the downtown area. They dedicate a weekend to crawfish, alligator, catfish etc cajun style foods while providing you with a great environment with Zydeco, Blues, Country and Cajun style music themes. There are several stages that offer different styles of music and dance and all the while there are several craft stations and food locations along the way. There is plenty of parking not too far away, it's located right on the water downtown and it's a great family event that everyone will love. The only downfall is the prices are a little high for the food/beverage, but it is a festival, so it's something to be expected. This is a fun event for music fans of all ages. This is set up to be family friendly with room for kids to run and dance. There are several dance floors/stages with Zydeco, rockabilly, country, blues, soul, and bluegrass. Lots of good food, beer, and wine. Downfall, not many beer choices. Friday night, only half the festival is open, but it is still a great time. Saturday can be a long day if the sun is hot, but you can bring in a beach umbrella. It cost $40 to get in per person kids are free. Had a lot of fun the musicians here are Beyond great for the price you're simply getting the deal of a lifetime. The person it selling the sunglasses was very hesitant but ended up on her Inc a deal that they had on the Gator by the Bay app. The sunglasses are extremely cheap and broke within 10 minutes I took him back and felt that the person working there did not feel obligated to honor the quality of his product as they are cheap. Everything is fairly inexpensive compared to the same people if you were to find them at the Del Mar Fair I think the entrance price of $40 reflects that. A great place to drink beer have family fun in the sun listen to music enjoy the day also a great thing to have as a family tradition to go once a year. read more

Been wanting to attend the Gator by the Bay for quite a while so the wife and I finally decided to go this year. I can say, right off the bat, that it was fun; but not $40 per person fun. Took a Lyft to the event because we didn't want to deal with the parking and the first thing to hit the senses were the music and the food. Two main stages on either end and two or three scattered throughout the concourse. People seemed to be enjoying themselves dancing, particularly the older crowd, which were the most predominant age group. The first thing I wanted to do was buy me a beer and I got a little confused as to the process; one line to buy tickets and a wrist ban and the other for alcohol. I know the reason for it is so they don't have to check everyone's ID for a beer but I didn't pay attention to the rules and bought 4 tickets. The beer was three so I was left with one. Back to the ticket buying line. I gave them enough money so I had a handful of tickets like I just got through playing skee-ball at Boomers. Plenty of Cajun food offerings with the crawfish lines being the longest. I ended up just getting gator bites and dirty rice. If I had stayed longer at the festival I probably would have tried other things but after three or four passes from one end to the other, I was done. We went shortly after one and the crowd starting getting heavier around 3 to the point where walking around was starting to get annoying. Spanish Landing seems like a awful small area to hold a festival of this size. The lines for the food were not organized too well along with the stage in the middle so getting by was quite a chore. This is a decent event but not really for me. I love going to festivals but I really think they should knock some off the cover charge. $80 for a couple that only stayed for a couple of hours and that didn't include the eating and drinking. I hope everyone that attends enjoys themselves thoroughly but for me, I think I'll let it pass next year. read more

This year's Gator By The Bay was the BEST EVER! And for the price, there are so many things to do, bands to see, dance lessons, cooking demonstrations~ALL FREE inside the event! Kids under 17 get in FREE (with a paid adult) Who lets "17 year old KIDS in free?"And if you purchase Advance tickets on-line you get a discount. The kids, played on toys, hula hoops, stilts, saw a parade with a band, saw a puppet show, learned how to play a rubboard (pretty funny) We all made FUN paper bag hats, learned how to cook Gumbo (mydaughter like that) There were so many things for the kids to do, that it was really great that they got in Free. We danced and danced to all kinds of music from Cajun, Country & Blues... I probably enjoyed the music the most... to see over 40 bands in one day... you can't even get to them all... Because it's at a park, there are so many other things for the kids to do and get their JAMS out, that by the end they were exhausted. The food was delicious and the portions were unbelievable, and the prices were good (a huge box of Cajun Chicken Tenders & Fries from Pears for only $6), I don't see how the vendors made any money... Every kind of very unusual and cool clothing, jewelry and Hats.. Hats.. Cowboy hats for only $10! They were prepared for the weather with covered dance floors and pop-ups to stand under when it rained or shined... Parking is always a hassle at any event, but they had shuttles and parking arranged with lots around the area. Unfortunately, that is something out of all events control- I go to a lot of street fairs and festivals and it is always an issue- you just expect it. This made my Mother's Day! $80 bucks for 2 for what? (Sunday 5/14) A fancy swap meet where you can drink beer (which you must purchase in addition to the $40 each ticket for admission) and dance to music. You have to really be into the Zydeco scene I guess. Best food options (which you have to purchase in addition to the $40 each ticket for admission) are in the narrow portion of the set up creating huge bottlenecks in order to pass by. Parking was a hassle but were able to scout out metered parking 10-15 minute walk. This experience would have been MAYBE passable at half the cost with a couple of free beers. I purchased two one-day VIP tickets for this event for Sunday, May 13; each was $120. The offer said that food, wine, and beer were included in the VIP area, along with "shaded" seating areas. Our first clue should have been when the front table personnel were more interested in messaging on their phones than helping us find the VIP area (it turned out they had no idea.) The shaded seating turned out to be eight small tables with umbrellas (with far too many people for this to be practical) and we grew frustrated after 25 minutes in the food line because there was apparently not enough actual food food on the line. All in all, I paid $240 for two tap beers. Wouldn't it have made more sense to apply this to a plane ticket to actually go to New Orleans instead of a gimmicky screw-fest? Never. Again. read more

Hey it's Gator by the Bay for Mother's Day! Do you hate your mother? Bring her HERE. I would rate this a minus-5 stars if I could. It is the bottom of bottom-dwelling sham festivals. It's a swap-meet of suck. A rajin' cajun ripoff. It's like the second-hand circus that comes to town with crippled animals and leaky tents. It is the Kardashian of festivals and the roller dog of cuisine. And the sad part is, people will go here and pay the horrendous $35 ticket because checking out festival reviews on Yelp just isn't very high on to-do lists (nor should it be, really). But I sure wish I had! We arrived at 5 p.m. Saturday, and were shocked to be charged the full $35 fare even though the place closed at 8 p.m. We should have made other plans right then. But I heard the food was good. What an epic failure of a decision that was. Navigating this place is like crawling through a tire fire, if by "tire" you mean people and "fire" you mean obliviousness. Weed out the mouth-breathers and stretch pants that $35 ticket did NOT! Between the ragged clientele and the inexcusable, ear-splitting volume of some of the bands, the discomfort level ballooned quicker than a White House scandal. The food? I ordered a "catfish dinner" which was served in a tiny french fry tray with a few chunks of fried catfish on top for $10. What a JOKE. The fries tasted like the odor of a porta potty. I returned them and got refunded, and I told the lady (she seemed like she had some control over the operation) she should be ashamed for not even tasting the fries following my complaint. I'm also writing a letter to the Better Business Bureau, because that same stand served my wife "jambalaya" which arrived as a small cup of rice. RUFKM? There is absolutely nothing noteworthy from the vendors. It's all the same crap you can find at Old Town or any other common spots in SD. But there is valuable breathing room here, because most of the patrons were sandwiched in lines at the food section. The amount of fury with which I discourage you from even driving by this place cannot be understated. I wouldn't even by tickets here to give to people I hate. read more

I've heard so much about this Gator By the Bay festival and every year I miss it for whatever reason. Well, this year I was around and my friend was visiting from out of town, so I thought it would be a fun thing to check out. UT San Diego had a discount deal online, so I got my ticket for $27 instead of the regular $35. At first I balked at the prices, but then I figured there MUST be something inside that festival that makes it worth that price. Maybe some good music? Unique vendor booths? Interesting events? Authentic cajun food....love my jambalaya! So ok fine. I bit the bullet and took my chances. We get there and parking is $20. Uh, wtf? It's some dusty, gravelly shit hole with zero security. But couldn't find any other lot or parking area, so fine. Another bullet down my gullet. I've got hot steaming bowls of jambalaya dancing in my head. Let's go get'em! We walk in and it looks like the backyard of The Beverly Hillbillies (before they strike oil!). I really do hate to judge and put people down, but it's basically the same people you see at Hometown Buffet and Wal-Mart. You know the ones. The ones in wheelchairs who ARE'NT disabled. Mesh shirts. Matching pink cowboy hats and boots. No teeth. Etc. The vendor booths consists of swap meet jewelry, purses made from leftover swatches found in the alley, knives, clay mugs that look like props from "Pineapple Express", eyeglass cleaners, puppets that look like they were made by prisoners in Tijuana and god-awful "art" that looks like something you'd see in a Motel 6 right before you blow your brains out.. Next, the food. My friend ordered the red beans and rice ($6) and I got the jambalaya ($8) and we both got the sweet tea ($5). Total $24. The gal at the register plops down 2 tiny styrofoam containers, the size of one of those small KFC sides that hold coleslaw and mash potatoes. I thought maybe one was the rice and the other beans. And my jambalaya would come out later. Nope. One was the rice & beans and the other container was my jambalaya. I was too stunned to flip out. I couldn't believe this crap. And the sweet tea was not worth $5. You're better off getting McDonald's 44 oz sweet tea for $1! It turned me off to any other food there. I didn't even want to chance it. I was all out of bullets to bite.. My friend did get a funnel cake for $8. But it was just your typical County Fair funnel cake. We did sit in at the cooking demo tent. It was supposed to start at 1pm, but didn't get started until well after 1:30pm. The chef cooked alligator gumbo. It tasted like fish to me. The best part of this was being able to sit in a shaded tent and rest. Now the music. I can't speak for all the music since I was only there on Sat. But I just heard a lot of basic fiddle music that I would hear at a free festival, like Balboa Park's Earth Day Fair, Little Italy Art Walk, any North or South Park street fair, any Farmer's Market, a talented homeless guy on the sidewalk in Downtown. You name it. What I'm saying is, I didn't hear anything that was worth $27 (much less $35). We watched the Bon Temps Social Club dance lessons for a while. But after 30 mins of it we had to leave. It was the same exact steps over and over and over. Kinda got sick in the belly with the repetition. So, while I can now say that I got to experience this ....I can also now safely say "never again!" read more

The place was only half capacity on Sat. and mostly older. My guess is 20 & 30 somethings aren't willing to spend that much to get into an experience similar to a free farmer's market. I have been attending Gator By The Bay for 4 years. Great location right next to the San Diego bay at Spanish Landing. It is a public park which has been used for the last 11 years. A large number of musical acts. Some local and some from Louisiana. You will certainly enjoy them, I'm sure. A lot of super fun people attend the event. Good for families, but no pets. You might bring a chair and umbrella. It can get a bit sunny. Fortunately there are two large tents for the major musical acts and great floors for dancing. And two other large band stages. And a tented dance floor for other entertainment. Plus there is a good amount of tree shade where you can relax while watching some of the musical acts. Gator by the Bay was a complete rip off!!! I went on Thursday 5/5/16 and was very disappointed. There were only two booths selling food (Pearsons and Flavors of East Africa). Pearsons was too expensive based on the small portions they served. Also, they advertised selling Gumbo, but had none. The only thing Flavors OEA was selling was sambusas because the rest of the food was cold. Worst of all there were no crawfish to be found on this day. The attendance was low with mostly elderly people. The live music playing in the tent area was okay I guess and you had to pay extra for seats. Overall, this was the worst experience. I feel like I got cheated because I paid $93 for tickets, $15 for parking plus money spent on some food and drinks. :( read more

I've been to Gator by the Bay for the past 5 years and I love it. There are 5 or 6 stages of music, dance lessons, cajun cooking lessons, and even harmonic clinics. You can find all sorts of new music that you may not have heard of, but so what! They are all great bands and many are local artists. And I like the variety of music - Zydeco, Cajun, Blues, and Country - no hard rock here folks - this is a kid-friendly event where you can dance barefoot all day long and hang out on the grass at beautiful Spanish Landing across from the airport. They also have unusual foods like crawfish, gator on a stick, and catfish just to mention a few. Of course the food and beer are festival-priced, yea that's a given. But, this is certainly a music festival that is worth trying out. Oh yea, I'll be there next year again. read more

I was born and raised in New Orleans and have lived there all my life until my recent move a few years ago to San Diego. Gator b By The Bay is like flying home without getting on a plane. The music of Louisiana takes me home every time. But it's not just Louisiana music, it's all sorts of music blues, latin, roots, swing, you name it, there is something for everybody. Now as far as the prices I would say they are in line or a bit lower than other festivals with this much entertainment. And if you want to listen to some great music or dance in an awesome safe waterfront environment, this is the place to be. Festivals are at the top of my entertainment list, but they aren't cheap, but if you can't afford it, that's not the fault of the festival. I often have to pass on things I can't afford, but that's on me. I attend at least 10 different festivals each year including my hometown of New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana, and I have to say Gator By The bay is my favorite. Yes the great weather with cool breezes off the harbor has a lot to do with it. So does the great music and dancing, without feeling like you went for a run in a sweat suit like my beloved New Orleans. Now i will say that I enjoy the food and I have my favorites, and know which ones are authentic. I do take issue with some of the vendors, but I could name several festivals I attend each year where I have faced the same issue when it come to food. You do have to be a bit savvy if you want a real Louisiana experience. Some people will say the food prices are high. I would say they are inline with typical festival pricing, no higher and in some cases less. Some people complained about the cost of parking, but if they would have just looked at the Gator By The bay website they would find free paring with shuttles back and forth. I would agree it cost a few coins to bring a family to any festival. But if you love great weather, great music, dancing and cool people, Gator by The Bay is the place for you. We had a wonderful time at this festival. Purchased 2 VIP tickets via Reader City for $45 but to be honest, the VIP section was extremely lame. They ran out of food and beer at 2pm. I had a good time, Danced a lot. The music was great no matter where you went. I was little disappointed that On friday I payed $30 and only 1/2 the event is open and the 1/2 that is a lot of the venders aren't there...There should be discounted tickets thurs and fri or make your venders be there. If we pay full price. I like a good party really but.. No security, No staff all your exits wide open no ticket required. ( i watched a gate where no one staffed it for over an hour) Not that i like bag checks, but you could bring anything you wanted into this event, and i saw it. full bottles of liquor. 6 packs. I don't think your beer servers have ever had ABC training i saw people walking away with 4 beers at a time, and stumbling drunk...And they were very rude when I tried to simply ask a question about tickets I know parking is always going to be an issue at events, but $30 a ticket then $20 to park really.. and nothing really for handicap accessible I think I'll stick to the Free music festivals thanks much friendlier. more welcoming, and dont rip you off every chance they get read more
