Can't give this anything less than 5 stars.... I absolutely love this event, and couldn't wait for it to start. I was there the first run this year and will go again next week. Only a couple of nights each year, on Thursday summer nights, the San Diego Museum of Arts hosts free movie nights where they show oldies, like Hitchcock movies on a screen in Balboa Park. It attracts a big crowd, and everybody comes there about one or two hours before the start of the whole thing, and brings chairs, tables, blankets, Snuggies (saw one!), board games, food and wine. The movie starts at 8PM, but if you want to be sure to see anything, be there no later than 6-something. Most people come right after work or are 65+ so don't work to begin with. That's the beauty of the event: you see a great variety of people: young, old, fat, rich, poor, families with kids, groups of friends, dates, students... all share the love of living in San Diego and spending time outdoors. So unless an obese person sits in front of you or you have screaming kids around, you will love everyone and everyone loves you. The movies are cultural and usually oldies so if you're not into that, you might not like it. But even if I couldn't see a thing or if they showed reruns of Sesame Street (I love Elmo in fact), I would still go. It's worth going solely for hanging out on a blanket on a summer night with friends, watching the stars or other people having a good time. One of my favorite things to do is crab food on the go and a bottle of wine at a deli downtown or in Little Italy, then head over to the park with friends. You often meet cool new people too since everybody is in a good mood and shares blanket spots. The very first time I got here, I was unprepared and fashionably late... I arrived one minute before the movie started, so it was packed... then cool people offered us perfect spots close to the screen... all in exchange for my Mona Lisa meatball sandwich. Well worth to starve for. I'm bummed that next week is the last one of this year.... then another whole year of waiting until it starts again. So one more chance to go this year... I even like this a bit better than Cinema under the Stars, although that's a good (paid) substitute and runs more often and until October. If you go, bring a pillow or a chair (or something to lay your head on, believe me you want to alternate sitting/laying down and it's awkward not being able to rest your head on something), a blanket, food, drinks, friends or anyone you don't want to talk to for two hours and you're ready to picnic!

I visited the San Diego Night Market around 5:30 pm the first night, and there was not much of a…read moreline at all. At least this year they were able to rent out part of the SDCCU Stadium lot, so there's a ton of parking and no need for a shuttle to get there. There were a good amount of vendors, but the food was really just mediocre. You also really have to do your research on all the vendors before you go, because the one we decided to get was awful. The one we went to had these BBQ Squid Skewers which we ordered, and they were very undercooked. They were pretty much still raw. We took it back to them and they just cooked it a little bit more and the second time around the body of the squid was cooked better, but the tentacles were still very raw. Some of the vendors also didn't really plan accordingly because by 8 pm, before peak time, some of them were already sold out of items. Most of the main course type foods were just average, overpriced food. I think the better items to get here are the drinks and the desserts, so I would recommend getting something to eat before you arrive, and then wait in line for the drinks and desserts. There was absolutely no seating at all, so a lot of people, us included, just ended up sitting on the ground to eat our food. There were maybe like 5 tables that I saw in the entire venue which were obviously occupied very very quickly. There was a ton of open space, even with the amount of people walking around and the long lines, so there should definitely be a lot more tables than there actually were. I hope that next year they really rent out way more tables and chairs because this year it was just not enough. Like I said, I arrived around 5:30 pm, and I was glad that I did, because by 8 pm, some of the vendors would run out of certain items, and the lines were just so ridiculously long, which led to a ridiculously long wait, for ridiculously mediocre food. When we left around 9:45, the line to just get inside was so long that it reached the concrete border at the lot and had to make a bend in order to not go past it. If you're planning on coming here, I highly recommend going closer to the opening time because there is no way that I'd pay $5 to wait hours in line for sold out food. I went in early, so the wait times weren't so bad for me, which is probably why my experience wasn't as bad as others. It was still pretty bad though.

I find it humorous reading the one-star reviews from earlier tonight because the 2019 version of…read morethe SD Night Market was an improvement over the past years, especially the cluster that was on Convoy St in 2018. That being said, many of the critiques were spot-on and accurate. Here were my observations for the first night of the event... Pros: * There were many more parking spaces than in the Kearny Mesa area. A shuttle was no longer needed to transport people to the site. * Food vendors were more numerous this time (~32 compared to less than 10). * There was plenty of open space away from the food lines to walk around and not feel overcrowded. Cons: * The wait to get into the stadium parking lot was ridiculously long. The organizers needed to hire SD Police to direct traffic and override the signals which were useless. * There was a competing auto festival on the other side of the stadium lot so that added to the congestion on Friars Rd. * The admission lines should have been more efficiently managed especially for those who had already purchased a ticket on Eventbrite. * Some vendors really underestimated the customer demand and ran out of food early. * The food lines did take a long time as many of the booths seemed caught off guard by the crowds. Overall, I gave my experience 2.5 stars and rounded up because trust me, the SD Night Market has been even more poorly organized than what we have seen so far. PS: I heard the Fire Marshal had to shut down admission around 10 pm because the capacity of 5,000 attendees had been reached.

We had one guy standing in the aisle a few rows behind us practically screaming his rehearsed lines and jokes. I've seen the movie before, both at the Ken and at home, and I couldn't hear most of the movie over the cast members just being truly obnoxious. I don't remember RHPS at the Ken being as crude and obnoxious 7 or 8 years ago as it is now. A majority of the audience was new people (virgins) so they have never seen the movie at the Ken and it would've been a great experience had the cast actually led the audience in doing the things they said to do at the beginning in the "Rules", which by the way took almost 30 minutes. And you can't hear or understand the rules because the MC is yelling into the mic, and the cast members are all having private conversations and then shouting their lines over him. It turns into a "who can say the funny line loudest" competition very quickly. And a lot of the lines that the cast did end up shouting were rehearsed responses to dialogue going on that the audience wouldn't know. The only good part of the night was the guy who played Riff Raff. He was the ONLY cast member that actually maintained his character and was entertaining. I thought the whole point of being an actor was to entertain an audience, not to entertain yourself and your friends in a private inside joke??

So I went for the "farewell" show recently when the Ken was in danger of closing. It was my first experience to have a live cast performing ("Crazed Imaginations") along with the movie and my impressions are mixed. After reading many Yelpers reviewing this troupe's work at the La Paloma showings, mine are pretty much in line: (1) I liked the cast put up this night...especially the gal doing Frank-N-Furter (very expressive and sexy). Another stand-out was the Investigator / Detective, whose classy business suit reflected a smoldering sensuality. The actress doing Janet also gets points for her effort and expressiveness getting into the role. (2) Now for the negatives...as others also cite (read the La Paloma & Crazed Imaginations reviews): a. MAN, the show's start is dragged out for an hour by their "MC" doing some lame jokes and laying out "rules" (only later to make the mantra: F#$ck the Rules). The dude loves to hear himself talk, but PLEASE cut us some slack and cut it back to about 10 minutes (and do the "virgin Initiation" in about half the time!! ). This way we MAYBE leave by the civilized hour of 2:15 AM or so (not 3 AM-plus !!). b. But the WORST are these clowns roaming the aisles screaming dumb, LAME come-backs to the film's on-screen dialog. Absolutely spoils everything when you can't hear the REAL movie actors lines, music lyrics, etc. As others say, these bozos really do a dis-service to the CI actors trying to present a good show. Get their ass out of the theater, PLEASE. My 2-starr overall rating reflects nothing on the cast, just these goony people roaming the theater yelling incoherent comments.
