I came, I saw, I returned, and I tried The Steak. Yep, the first steak of my life ever was eaten at Gaucho, and what a place to do it.
I surprised Chris M for his birthday meal by secretly leading him to Gaucho - he's a steak fan and a half, and if the way to his heart was through his stomach, this was the place to bring him. I knew he'd love it all... the chairs made of cow, the board of cuts they bring over and talk you through (I left this to be a surprise too and he adored it) and the fact that the meat is so darn good. Quality is of the essence here, and sheesh, do the Argentinians know how to serve up bovine intervention. (Note: vegans would hate this place. Just sayin'.)
I'd ordered cocktails for the table as a treat too, and it was certainly a good idea for us to skip starters, especially as I knew about the free bread thing from the first time round. It's very easy to get overfull at Gaucho, and I was wearing an unforgiving dress. So we sipped away at our drinks, his a sweet fruity concoction with zubrowka and strawberries, mine whisky, blackberries and pears... great aperitifs. So when it came to the meat board and we told our waitress that I'd just started eating meat after 12 years of only fish, she asked if I was interested in trying steak and when I replied in the positive, she gave recommendations and advice. I was best to start with something really lean and delicate, like a fillet steak, done medium, which is what I went with. Chris found the board of cuts and the information that went with it really interesting as we were told that fatty cuts shouldn't really be cooked rare, and his default steak option was often rare rib-eye, which made him think. So he opted for rump, medium-rare, and while mine was a manageable 225g his was a whopping great 400g. Yikes!
Once we'd ordered we got the delicious bread, with pots of flaky sea-salt, ground pepper, oil with herbs and tiny vegetable pieces and real butter - the wholemeal was hearty and soft, and those fresh-baked cheese rolls, oh, they are just wonderful. I can't believe they let you have them for free. I'd pay over the odds for just a bite of them. How many ways can I say nom? The steaks arrived with fries as standard, amazing fries too, and we ordered sides of tenderstem broccoli and garlic and lemon spinach. My introduction to steak was perfect. Just the right amount of rare and crisp, it was heavenly. The veg was well-seasoned and tender and I tried Chris's steak too, it was spectacular.
The only reason for the drop in star? My dearest and I had to endure a half-hour bill payment (first waiting for it, then being given it, then waiting to pay), and at that point on such a frosty night all we wanted to do was get home and curl up under blankets. Gaucho took up more of our evening than it should have done, *grump*! read more
