Overall, we felt that DJ Chris did a great job mixing dance floor music, but that communication and preparation could have been more thorough. Below is a summary of our experience. -Our dance floor was packed all night and the music mix was spot on for dancing! -We rented a karaoke machine through the company and it was a huge hit at our after party -All communication goes through Gavin and not your specific DJ; we would have loved more direct communication with our DJ prior to the event and/or visibility into Gavin passing along information to our DJ -We would have appreciated if Gavin and DJ Chris reviewed our Spotify playlist earlier than the night before our wedding so that any issues/questions could have been surfaced in advance (for instance, an unexpected version of a song was played for a first dance rather than the famous original version we assumed would play - we should have clarified this but also would have appreciated being asked which version ahead of time if there was confusion) -We had a couple unexpected mic issues during our wedding - all were quickly solved by DJ Chris All in all, it was a wonderful night and guests had a great time despite minor communication and preparation issues. read more

We hired Gavin to do videography for my late brother's memorial service. Gavin and his crew were very professional and the resulting sound and images captured the event perfectly. Gavin also took our slideshow across the finish line, getting the music we had chosen just right, and incorporating the slideshow into the final memorial video with high quality video and audio. The memorial culminated in a live musical tribute by two friends on acoustic guitars, which Gavin well- captured visually and aurally I feel like the out of town and country friends who couldn't be there were able to share the event with us in a very personal and intimate way because of the quality product Gavin and his team produced. After a considerable amount of research, my husband and I decided to go with Santa Barbara DJs for our wedding reception. We were fortunate to have Gavin Roy (the owner of SBDJs) run the show. I requested 4 hours of service (opting to create my own playlist for cocktail hour), plus a basic lighting and sound system and received a quote less than 5 minutes later. This made the decision-making process quick for us. One thing to note is that SBDJs is really good about offering discounted packages, so make sure you inquire about them! Through his site, he offers a few cool things. For one, you can send your guests a link to a site where they can make requests, and you can exercise veto power. Second, on his site you can enter in all the details of your reception (event timeline, requested songs, a do-not-play list, and so on). This was really helpful in ensuring that our reception didn't turn into a Macarena dance party, and it allowed him and Kristin (Pure Joy Catering's event supervisor) to coordinate our reception events as a team, making the entire night run smoothly. He gave us several helpful suggestions for making our party a fun one for our guests, based on his experience. A few days before the wedding, he informed my fiance that he was going to throw in more lights than we had ordered, since he really liked how our venue looked when it was totally lit up. As if he hadn't already gone above and beyond! My cocktail hour playlist consisted of chill, down-tempo music like Zero 7, some Groove Armada, Lykke Li, Sade, and Frou Frou / Imogen Heap. I wasn't sure how to describe to Gavin (via his website) what we wanted played for dinner, so I put down "instrumental classic jazz" on the form. At the reception, Gavin knew that what we really wanted was more trip hop type music, so not only did he start working half an hour earlier than we had paid him to, but he continued the good music straight through dinner. We wanted to avoid hearing a ton of Michael Buble or power ballads through our meal, so we were incredibly grateful for this. Gavin can read a room really well. The dance floor was always packed. Guests kept telling me that he was the best DJ they had ever had at a wedding. Naturally I had some guests begging me to have the DJ play some songs on our "Do Not Play" list (like the Cha Cha Slide and the Achy Breaky). Every time that happened, Gavin made sure to hunt me and my husband down and get the requests approved by us. The day of our wedding, another couple having a wedding nearby decided that it was okay to direct their guests to the parking lot that WE had rented, by posting signs everywhere. Gavin and his assistant tore those signs down after the site manager confirmed that Peter and I were entitled to exclusive use of the venue and the parking lot. One of the best weddings my husband and I attended before our own wedding had its music provided by DJ Gavin. After we got engaged, we quickly snatched him up for our special day and it went perfectly! Gavin is seriously a gem!!!! DJ Pete: I have no doubt that Gavin Roy himself is great and my experience initially speaking and planning things for my wedding was great! However, we were assigned to dj Pete - ironically one of his dj's not reviewed by Yelp. For our wedding we had very specific instructions that were discussed and I thought through continual assurance that all would be great. No doubt my cocktail hour with familiar music worked and everyone enjoyed it. However, our family is half Armenian and half German. We gave Gavin and his team a flash drive of nearly 20 songs of Armenian music. We discussed mixing in Armenian with the American so our German side would not feel overwhelmed or exhausted. Sound easy right? Majority of the night was spent with erratic mixing and replaying of songs (while others were not played). Awkward transitions happened a lot - my German side who hardly dances finally got up to slow dance. Exciting right? So what does our dj do when he sees a dance floor full of people slow dancing? He puts on major salsa music. They took requests from genre's of music that I told them not to - because we have a conservative family. And, even I as the bride had to go and speak to dj Pete 3 times and my father 2 times too. The song that was suppose to be played during cake cutting was cut then never played, because quote: "the dj couldn't see us cause of a blocking wall" - I guess having a staff of waiters and a wedding coordinator wasn't enough to ask for help in that way. What this dj does not realize is that I had many guests, a wedding coordinator, and a wedding video that clearly supports our version - rather than the version dj Pete I'm sure embellished for Gavin (which he did instead of assuming accountability). Working with Gavin: I would say go with Gavin - given how experienced he sounds from other reviews. In my meetings and conversations with him he is knowledgable in vast music genre's and picks up on your wants as far as the music goes (and makes great suggestions - our finale music was a fantastic choice!) Gavin was extremely professional and quite kind in his exchange and dealings. He planned accordingly, organized and updated things as they went along. He is a consummate professional and will make sure you are satisfied. Sometimes a bad seed gets into a good apple and that is all that happened to us. After hiring Gavin to DJ our wedding, I am absolutely convinced that he is the BEST DJ on the planet! Gavin provided extraordinary MC/DJ and lighting services at our wedding. Santa Barbara DJs are absolutely awesome! We got married back in 2009 and we still remember Gavin and his crew as one of the BEST BEST parts of our reception. Seriously we have never seen so many people dance for so long at any wedding like they did at ours. Everyone had a fantastic time! They played the perfect mix of music keeping people on their feet. I hate when DJs can't read the crowd and let a song play for way too long. SBDJs are masters at their job AND are super nice, down to earth guys too. Seriously, this company is as good as it gets when it comes to expertise and finesse in the DJ industry. My wife and I had our wedding a month ago (December 2014) in Solvang, and finding the right DJ had been our highest priority. She believed from the beginning that this could make or break the party, and after seeing how perfectly it went off, I see that it all really did hang in that balance. I admit that I was stuck in pricing from the 90s and didn't plan to spend what we did on this aspect of the wedding, but now I know I'd easily pay much more for the quality we received. (Side note: we skimped on the video people and got what we paid for). Gavin deejayed the event, but the overall company gave us real peace of mind from our very first phone call. Their online planning tool taught us what events we'd need music for, and they even provided all of the music and equipment for the ceremony. On our RSVP form, we had asked our guests, "What song is guaranteed to make you get up and dance?" - a question we weren't sure we'd ever get answered, let alone use at the event. However, their responses flowed in, and we sent them along to Gavin. Not only did he use every song - which kept our floor filled all night - but he mixed them so expertly that the beats seemed to match song to song to song in short intervals. The requests from guests weren't even all dance-friendly, but he made them danceable!!! We really had a pro dance party there thanks to him. Above all, it must be mentioned that our event was no typical affair for a deejay. I wish I could say we made it easy on him, but at least 5 different people had surprises that Gavin had to keep secret and straight from the next. This could have led to several miscues and mistakes - but not on Gavin's watch. He nailed every single cue with the perfect song intro or mic placement. All of this while playing master of ceremony. Gavin, Carly, and team, we cannot thank you enough for what you did for us. People are still talking about the wedding almost a whole month later, and everyone wants us to know that we had the greatest DJ. We are so lucky, and could not be more grateful. With his very easy-to-use website allowing us to slate selected songs -- and, perhaps, more importantly, create a comprehensive "no play" list -- as well as allowing our guests to share their requests, planning was easy. On the final call prior to the wedding where we went over those choices, my wife and I agreed that we could hear the wheels turning in Gavin's brain as he looked through our music. He seemed, almost, to be putting together playlists right in front of us. On the big day, Gavin worked very well with our ceremony guitarist and our officiant at the ceremony site (Santa Barbara Courthouse Gardens), as well as with our guitarist who performed during cocktail hour at the reception (Chase Palm Park Plaza). Once it was Gavin's turn to take over, his playlist and rotation of songs through the dinner hour was impeccable and he handled the announcements of the wedding party and toast speeches like a pro. No silly bluster, just very professional and on top of things. Leading up to the wedding, we told Gavin we really wanted the last 2.5 hours of the reception to be a big dance party. To say he got that idea would be a major understatement.
