The main gallery walks you chronologically through history, starting with natural history and prehistoric fossils, leading into the rich living culture of the native syilx / Okanagan people. My favorite part of the museum was the model of a kekuli (the same name as the Bannock place nearby), which is the subterranean winter home used by the Indigenous people of the area. I also appreciated how candidly the exhibits covered the impacts of British settlement, detailing how colonial efforts aimed to bring in specific settler demographics, resulting in land displacement and a push to convert the valley into farmlands. The museum also does a great job highlighting other minority groups and their struggles, including a thoughtful segment on Kelowna's historic Chinatown and the artifacts salvaged before its demolition in the 1970s. It was so interesting to learn about the shift from early tobacco farming to the fruit and wine industry we see today. Upstairs, there was a neat feature exhibit touching on local history like the old Kelowna Regatta and how the massive festival ended after back to back riots in the 1980s. Tips for Visiting and Nearby Highlights: Military Museum: We wanted to visit the nearby military museum as well, but they are not open at the same times and are closed on Sundays, so be sure to check their schedule before you go. Parking: There is free parking in the garage right next door on Sundays. Nearby Spots: Don't miss the lovely Kasugai Japanese Garden located right behind the museum, and take a short walk down toward the waterfront where you will find the new Kelowna sign. The Summerland Museum is a small quaint museum nestled in the heart of Summerland, BC. It's full…read moreof history of the town as well as the region. I'm sure it has parking, but we just parked in a lot next to some apartments and walked through the grass. Summerland is a laid back town and we didn't see any parking tickets or speed traps while there. The museum was a wonderful find for us because the administrator, Sherril Foster, was incredibly helpful and patient! I went in with some family members looking for history of our family and how they came to Summerland. Ms. Foster was kind enough to take out all the old binders, photos, and records she had of our two sets of ancestors that traveled from Japan to Summerland. We spent almost two hours with Ms. Foster and in the end we walked out with a huge amount of information and clarity on our roots we didn't imagine we'd find in a small sleepy town museum. Ms. Foster also allowed us to make copies of her records about our family. She normally would make the copies, but she did more research while she allowed me to use her copier in her office. She also plans to scan and email several photos that include my ancestors from the 1920's in Summerland. There is a computer with internet access that we were able to use to do more research on. There were also several books for sale, one of which we purchased because it mentioned our family in it. As we did some research, my husband wandered the museum and took a look at the displays. There were several interesting displays and we were impressed with the level of displays for a museum in a small town that exists on donations. Make sure to donate as you come in, as there is no entrance fee! And say hi to Ms. Sherril Foster, she's one helpful lady!

It's more VQA Wine Shop then it is museum but it definitely has some interesting historical artifacts in the museum. For those that don't know VQA means BC Vintners Quality Alliance wines, which is a guarantee you're purchasing 100% BC wine. They have a delicious assortment of wines available in the store side, but do not sell at winery prices even though the website says they do. After visiting half a dozen wineries prior to our museum visit, buying wine at wineries and noticing prices (comparing the same vintage at both places)...we noticed a definite increase in prices ($2-3) at the VQA store. No bigs just truths. It's fun to wander through checking out wines and the history of wine. We visited on a day there was a wine tasting (Lost Inhibitions) and a food sampling. And if you have time the BC Orchard Industry Museum is right next door. Even though we've seen it, we would visit again.
