I don't mind paying for great hair and this is what you will do at Togninis…read more While 6 years ago I was a devout customer of the edgier (and let's face it, younger) AKA Togninis, I've since spent years overseas, been a Bergdorf blonde, drunk whisky with a potty-mouthed but loveable snipper while getting the chop in a teensy two-person salon in the Lower East Side of NY, had my fair share of rubbish hair experiences and returned to Brisbane to settle into the chair of the slightly more grown up Togninis Hair Skin Body. And how quickly I have become comfortable in said chair. The totally luxe new salon is a haven which makes the somewhat time consuming task of getting beautiful an utter joy. It's a heady combination of light, glass, minimalism, massage chairs and a pleasing soundtrack. It lacks the grit and blue air of the LES hole in the wall I have so enjoyed frequenting, but it makes up for it in uber grown up glamness. From my first foray into grown up Brisbane hair land, I have been entirely satisfied with my stylist Ying-Sun and my colourist Nell. Ying-Sun brought the wave out in my previously kinky hair and Nell just understands when I want a bright, but not too cherry, red. When it comes to hair experiences, I have discovered that I am equally at home sipping macchiatos and reading Vogue as I am swilling whisky, petting a French Bulldog and reading Inked magazine. Even still, there is a high that a trip to Togninis delivers that trumps all. And don't we all just love a good trumping.

I used to be a regular back in the '90s, when it was still based in Edward Street, and attracted pretty much the best snippers and hippest clients around. Now, in its spacious swanky new hair salon-come-boutique in the buzzy, chi-chi James Street area, I thought it might have lost some of its edge. (Although, judging from the shelf which was absolutely heaving with the all awards it's won, I shouldn't have worried). I popped in there for a quick tidy up of my new, cropped hair and I couldn't have been more pleased with the cut I got. My stylist, Roxanne, spent ages looking through every layer of my bonce, checking the condition and texture. We then talked through what I was finding difficult with it (it was laying a bit too flat against my head), so she cut just the right amount (and length) of new layers in it to give it much more oomph. And make it easier to manage. Yes, it cost a lot ($100 for a senior stylist) but I've always been of the school of thought that you need to pay more than average for a quality haircut. Why? Because I'm worth it.

But my girlfriend of years has been going here for her last three haircuts (she's developed a penchant for short asymmetrical cuts with a choppy fringe) and seems pretty sold on the place, so I will be channeling her experience for this one. She was first prompted to try the place when a friend who'd had dreadlocks for 10 years decided to get them cut off at Chop. Apparently on arrival you get the royal treatment with the staff offering you a drink -- not just the usual coffee but wine or orange juice, pretty sweet. The place has a pretty sleek design with hardwood floors and trendy textured hexagonal patterned wallpaper. With all these hard surfaces it's a good thing that they don't turn the music up too loud. Recently my girlfriend came back with a cut and a colour (usually she'd just get the former). When I asked her about the price she was tight-lipped at first, then let me know it was $180. Apparently, that's not too bad.

I've been long and short with Chop and over the last 12 months moved from my natural brunette to blonde foils. I've never had any problems with the finished product after a visit to Chop, but I feel comfortable enough to talk to them if I wasn't 100% happy with what had been done. They never push products on you, rather gently suggest what would work best for your hair (I do use their products as my hair is always at its best when I do). Other than the incredible work they do with hair, everyone at Chop Haircutters is lovely, friendly and make you feel completely welcome. Their prices are on the high side, but no more so than many other boutique salons around Brisbane. And in my opinion, you get what you pay for! And I'm always happy with my hair. If you're looking to try something new, go for Chop. I have seen classic hairstyle walk through the salon, as well as some great funky and alternative cuts and colours.

The thing I love best about it is the big, reclining massage chairs at the wash basins. The apprentices are also well-trained in the art of head massage--I could easily fall asleep sitting there. The owner, Peter, is often in the salon and contrary to the stereotypes there may be about male hairdressers, he is very down to earth and friendly, and clearly takes a hands-on role in his business. As I said, Bach is a bit out of my price range with cuts starting from $110, but for those cashed-up individuals, I highly recommend it.

The staff can sometimes come across aloof and snobby, which I don't love, but once you warm them up they get past that 'I'm a trendy hairdresser' attitude and really do something fab with your hair. It freaks me out, I sit there anxious and 90% of the time I leave hating my hair (I get attached to the length.) Not at Barber Queen! Helena is fantastic and made me feel at home. The salon is very simple, warm, and welcoming. I got a wash and treatment done and the treatment she used worked better than any other I've had done, and it smelled great! Then it came time for the cut. Before she even looked at the scissors she was asking me what I wanted done, thoroughly checking that I was ok with home much was coming off, and making suggestions about layering. She even explained the difference different kinds of layers would make! Thorough out the cut she was constantly checking that I was happy with everything she was doing. Her assistant then blow dried it, she was so gentle I barely felt her brushing it! The experience was totally painless and I left loving my hair and feeling fabulous!

So glad I did!…read more After several bad experiences (and bad hair cuts) at salons across the western suburbs, I was really hesitant to try out another hairdresser. But after reading Ellia C's review, I thought I'd give them a go. I really wanted to find a hairdresser closer to home, and not have to pay exorbitant prices like some of the other salons around. I took a a chance on a Tuesday afternoon and walked in to the salon hoping they could do a hair cut. Helena came to my rescue! She's such a lovely, lovely person, and me me feel at home straight away. She talked to me at length about what I wanted done, and also listened when I complained about my previous bad experiences. She made me feel so comfortable, that I was happy for her to go ahead and cut a good 3-4 inches off my hair! My hair cut turned out WAY better than I expected, and I was so pleased with it. She also convinced me to get a semi-permanent colour through my hair as my hair was looking a bit 'tired'.. So glad she convinced me. My new 'do looked awesome. And the colour really refreshed my hair and made it look all nice and shiny and new :) Helena is awesome! I've been back again and had my hair cut just this week - went even shorter than last time (pixie cut) - and was comfortable and confident in Helena's skills that I just let her cut away. She's so thorough and just completely professional. We have a nice time chatting, that by the time she's finished the cut, I don't even realise that it's been at least a good 30 mins. It's hard to find a new hairdresser after a move and this was my 4th one. The salon is small and do very personable. Maddy my stylist and I are stilling getting to know each other, but are heading in the right direction of meeting my very basic hair needs. David Murray is lovely and is very lucky to have selected such a wonderful team. You share a great hairdresser with trepidation because, like an only child, you fear sharing him with others. This is how I feel about David and his fabulous team. They're so good I want to keep them all to myself. There's nothing particularly special or fancy about the storefront, and get your haircut by the first available employee. Most of them have done a good job for me in the past, and I've left as happy as I have from barbers/hair salons twice and three times the price. The caveat is that if they're busy and in a rush, the quality of their work leaves something to be desired. It's certainly not the best pick if you have something elaborate in mind, but for simple, professional haircuts, it's a great choice so long as it's not busy.

I did get the feeling that he didn't really want to cut my hair, I wondered if it was a racial thing (I am middle eastern). He was unsmiling, reluctant to look me in the eye or even talk to me. Like most of the budget places they work fairly fast, which is good for me because I have my hair cut during my working day and don't want to be sitting around for 3 hours like you do in the hipster places.
