The Director and teachers are amazing - they love the kids and always go above and beyond to make sure the kids are well taken care of and flourishing. We are so impressed with every detail. Absolutely phenomenal preschool!!!…read more We have been with Kensington Highlands for the past three years, since our daughter turned 2.5 yo until now, 5.5yo. Btw, when searching for the preschool originally, I followed our pediatrician recommendation, who had all her three kids at Kensington Highlands. And it has been an amazing experience for our family! Rich curriculum, amazing programs, field trips, organic food and, as one person has already mentioned, humongous backyard where kids spend all summer long playing, splashing, riding, running or enjoying occasional snacks. But what is truly impressive - it's Kensington teachers and staff family. Yes, they are teaching standard curriculum, and yes, most kids get a huge head start, easily plowing through KG or even sometimes through 1st grade books by the end of the preschool. But the most valuable, IMHO, is that warmth, wholehearted and positive attitude, respect and love that kids get every single day, for years! I'll mention just a few examples: kids would constantly get handmade gifts and toys from Miss S. Well made, well thought, unique gifts, the ones you might get from your beloved Auntie or GrandMa. Or those festive special programs, which teachers and kids would practice for months and then perform in front of their families and friends, that would always bring smiles and tears of joy. (Damn Covid, our Graduation Program, Wizard of Oz, was cancelled) We LOVE you Kensington teachers!!! And will definitely miss you when the time comes to say good bye. As to bad experience, I frankly, don't have much to say. Yes, once I picked up our daughter with a diaper rash, and that's how we learned that she was not fine with acidic food at that age. Then recently Kensington expended and built a new location in Hinsdale, and we, Highlands, went through a couple of new directors just in the matter of months, but from our family perspective, the transition was very smooth. Overall, highly recommend! Solid five stars, Kensington family!

Enjoyed the cliff walls of Buffalo Rock and the shallow waters of some side passages. We paddled for 5 hours, covering 8 miles total. After we were done we headed to charming, historic downtown Utica for drinks and dinner at Skoog's Pub & Grill in North Utica, IL. I was impressed with the logistics and operation of the kayaking experience, from the guide* to the equipment and online booking process. *Full disclosure, the guide was my twin sister, but I am being objective...seriously.

For this reason I like having tour guides. Going up the river was fine. Coming back went a bit sour. I went as slow as I was capable of paddling or not paddling, but apparently it was too fast for the preference of our tour guide. I was barely touching the water with my paddle. I have no idea how I could have gone any slower. It wasn't humanly possible. After shouting at me several times, he took to chasing me down and ramming my kayak so it'd spin in circles. Would I rent a kayak here and kayak the river alone? Yes. Would I personally use a tour guide here? No I wouldn't. Would I recommend? If you're a family with little kids or a drunk sorority house, absolutely. If you know what you're doing, just go it alone. You'll probably enjoy it more. Edit: If the tour guide had concerns for group safety, he could have said so. Although ramming my kayak with his seems to be a bit of a conflict as far as my safety goes. It was an unprofessional approach when he could have simply explained why he needed me to slow down

"Was that the Frank Lloyd Wright house?" "Was that the house…read morewith the creek in the back?" "Was that the house with the slot machines in the basement?" "Was that the reunion where I got sand thrown in my face?" "Why didn't those old men let Dad play bocce ball with them?" -Things I asked my mom in regard to family reunions from the late 1980s to early 1990s. A distant family member (not a resident of ANY of the above mentioned homes), is a genealogy enthusiast and wanted to do another family reunion. Unfortunately, it wasn't at any of the ultra-cool homes I remember from being a kid (the owners of the Frank Lloyd Wright house have since sold, moved to Arizona, and are 90+ years old now). So we were left with a few options... My visit to the Sokol Brookfield was for a family reunion this weekend for about 60 people. They chose the Sokol for the central location and price. At $12.50/person, we were able to rent out the space which included fried chicken, pizzas, various Pepsi products, a keg of beer and 2 security guards. That's a pretty oddball combination of things, and I don't know why we needed security. Our family contributed individual dishes to the meal as well. The fried chicken was very good, but the pizza was not good. Edible, yes, but I didn't go back for a second slice. I didn't catch a glimpse of what vendors the Sokol uses, but during those preliminary e-mails from family, they seemed very flexible about packages. They are not at ALL your stuffy, cookie-cutter banquet hall. It appears that our family was responsible for the set-up as well, from setting up tables to warming up dishes. Our pierogi arrived late, but only because the caterer didn't know it was supposed to be delivered. Aside from security, there is no "planner" or on-site assistant available. For the price, this venue is great for an extremely tight-budget wedding or reunion. It's very no-frills both inside and out, but the space could've easily held possibly 100 (or more) people. It's your typical VFW-style hall: brown paneled walls, white vinyl tile floors, and it's located in the basement of the building which unfortunately had a gross mildew smell in the entrance. The parking lot is a bit small considering how many people can fit into this space, but I didn't hear any complaints, so I am assuming there is easily accessible street parking in the area. I don't think I would organize my own event at the Sokol, but that's mainly because there are so many other venues like it. There's enough room here to spread out and not be forced into awkward chit-chat with your second-cousin's child from a third marriage.
