Big Island Jeep Rental - Thanks so much BIJR!

Big Island Jeep Rental

We rented the Jeep Renegade named "General Gene". The bed was loaded with beach chairs, a cooler, beach umbrella, pool noodles, 2 boogie boards, life vest and 2 sets of snorkel fins with plenty of room for luggage for the 3 of us. All at NO extra charge!

I just finished law school and took the Bar Exam. My partner and I planned a trip to the Big Island…read morewith two goals in mind: (1) Driving to the Summit of Mauna Kea, and (2) see the best beaches we could. Since doing the first item requires a 4x4 vehicle (true fact, rangers check your car for 4lo and will turn you back without it), and many beaches require some off-pavement driving, we knew we needed a Jeep or another high clearance car with 4wd. I've rented dozens of cars from big name car rental outfits but I've constantly run into the problem of Hertz, Thrifty, etc not having the car I requested upon arrival--I just didn't trust selecting an "off road" or "luxury SUV" category and not ending up with the right kind of car. I also hate using businesses that are not local that direct all profits to off-island corps. Ultimately we found Big Island Jeep Rentals (BIJR). We were able to not just rent a Jeep, but a specific vehicle that we knew met our needs. It took out the uncertainty of renting from a big name car rental. While we had to arrange a short ride from the airport to reach BIJR, we did not have to wait in an hours-long queue that you normally face in the Budget/Enterprise/Sixt airport car rental multiplex. We had a contactless pick up and were on our way, canvas down, playing music as we found our first beach. It was also helpful because BIJR will add folding beach chairs, a quality wind-resistant beach umbrella, swim fins, and a small cooler to your trunk for you! These were essential items for enjoying the Big Island beaches. BIJR also sent us useful videos on how to use the 4x4 features for driving up Mauna Kea and a video on how to operate the cloth-top and access the trunk--useful since I've never driven a Jeep or used a 4x4. BIJR also made some reasonable requests to avoid certain tourist 4x4 spots where newbie off-roaders often (a) get into trouble or (b) damage BIJR's Jeeps and complicate those drivers' trips (e.g., Makalewena Beach and the Green Sand Beach [of which we heard was underwhelming anyway]). BIJR also can give you great tourist spot recommendations, too. In the end the only complication was that the Jeep we reserved was returned in bad shape. BIJR gave us a free upgrade to a luxury trim, but made sure we had all the features we needed (thanks for the Rubicon). Bottom Line: We got to do everything we wanted. I felt safe and prepared to use the 4x4 features. We were secure knowing our car rental would not be swapped for an insufficient replacement at the last moment. We were comfortable knowing our car rental could handle what we planned (in style). We had free access to a few beach items that made our luggage smaller and kept us from buying equipment on the Island that we'd have to leave behind. In the end we paid less than a premium upgrade at one of the big name car rental shops and got to support a local business.

These guys do an incredible pre-rental inspection which includes a mirror on a dolly and an iPad running video. Virtually every aspect of this vehicle is video documented prior to rental, and the same procedure is run upon return of the vehicle. They obviously know what they are doing. We rented a nice big Toyota 4Runner for the journey, and the vehicle performed flawlessly. The weather cooperated, too. It was a great experience, and I would rent from this company again.

Things worked out great because we killed some time after arriving from Honolulu on the first, early morning flight by eating ono grinds at Pine Tree Cafe. Harper Rental is located in the same shopping center right behind Pine Tree Cafe. It's about a $14.00 +tip taxi ride to Harper from Kona Int'l, but if you arrive within their business hours there's a FREE/Courtesy Shuttle (w/sexy eyebrows!). They open promptly at 7:00 AM and the only downfall is that regular drop-off is at 5:00 PM every day, otherwise you're charged an additional day. So basically, we're paying for two whole days and actually only using the car for one (there goes my life savings!) Janky, but at least we're buying LOCAL. The guy helping us started out being a bitch -- totally curt and very non-Aloha! But he warmed up after our credit card payment went through. LOL. He cracked one joke and guffawed like a typical mahu, awesome sauce! (btw, I'm legally entitled to gay-dar) $81.95/day full-size vehicle (we got a Mazda 5 wagon, meh!) $8 per additional driver. 5% military discount. $30 fee for airport drop-off/return. I wouldn't say this is a last resort rental, but definitely don't plan a visit to Kona overnight because other rentals have way better rates.

He took a few minutes to walk us through how he could help, during spring break and all. He was solution oriented, friendly, and we drove out of there feeling a sense of relief and appreciation. What I appreciated most was how he handled the insurance conversation. It didn't feel like a pitch at all - he just explained it in practical terms, especially with the kind of driving you end up doing on the island. It actually helped us make a confident decision instead of guessing. We ended up getting the basic coverage. Overall just a really smooth experience. He knows what he's doing and makes things easy without overcomplicating it. Would definitely rent from them again, and if Nate's there, even better.

He went to the back side and found a small tinting scratch on the trunk side window. He asked me if I saw this too. I looked into my video, and it was sunny outside, so that small tinting scratch didn't show. The guy said, "Ok, I'm not going to do the paperwork for this." Don't worry. You are good to go. AND THEN I got an email showing new damage. They emailed me the receipt showing "no damage" yesterday, and today they emailed me a receipt showing "new damage." I remember the guy, and my grown-up son was there too. He heard the employee agreed that we didn't make the scratch. Because we went there for a short trip, a 5-hour trip. So we didn't have any luggage and nothing to load in the trunk. I will continue to contact the main office and Kona office in MANY WAYS, and my lawyer as well. Let's see how it goes!

I saved money for this rental which is always a good thing! I was worried about the pick up & drop off shuttle, I read about the wait for shuttle bus, but I did not encounter any bad experience. Both shuttle drivers were nice and working hard, one of them even add some jokes while he dropped us off .
