The outside of this place does not exactly look inviting and the inside is filled with people who seem a little disinterested in what you want and more interested in taking your money. My problem is that I compare this place with the uni gym which obviously in terms of size ect is unfair however I just feel that the all round service here is quite poor. They sell supplements ect here and it seems to be that whole mantra of making alot of money fast and I am unconvinced that they actually care about the fitness of their customers. The equipment is good and varied and I cannot say this place isnt well run but for me it just didnt have the right atmosphere to make me a fan or indeed a regular member.

The gym is quite large for a city centre as it is actually located deep down below street level. It has 24 hour access and a fun door tube thing that needs a personal code (my favourite part of the experience.) There are plenty of machines and didn't seem to busy even at peek times! (6-9pm weekday). Maybe that was because there was so many treadmills/bikes? For a first time gym goer I definitely feel at ease to go again. Looks like they have a large group of personal trainers on hand to hire too! Also seems clean and has a customisable protein shake machine! Looking forward to giving that a go! Good music too! Only downside is that there is no pool or sauna, but for £10 a month it's still a pretty good deal.

They have several facilities including a gym, climbing wall and swimming pool. In addition, they offer fitness classes spread over each semester offering a wide variety of courses and daily sessions. You do not necessarily have to be a member nor do you have to be a current student to use their facilities. If you're a member of the public, it will cost slightly higher than if you pay and go as a Liverpool University student. Overall, I do recommend the sports centre. It has a lovely gym and sports hall where it is great for anything from 5-a-side football to badminton. Membership prices are generally reasonable for a student but I would only become a member if you are committed to using the sports centre quite often; at least once a week to benefit.

The swimming pool is only half size and the equipment is fairly limited, however there is a great community atmosphere on this gym, unrivalled by some of the big name gyms in Liverpool. Although the gym is fairly small, it has running machines, cross trainers, a free weight and machine weight area, a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. You can purchase protein shakes and smoothies, you can also attend plenty of classes such as Pilates and Yoga as part of your membership. You can opt for a personal trainer if necessary for motivation once or twice a week. Membership is inexpensive, paying £30 for six weeks as a student membership! The staff are excellent, when I joined they wrote me a full training programme as part of my induction and have been nothing but helpful ever since. The location is also brilliant, being bang in the centre of town! I would recommend going in the daytime if you want to spend a long time on the machines, as the gym busies up between 6-9pm! Or get there when they open at 7am Mon-Fri if you want the gym/pool pretty much to yourself!

For the low low price of £20 per month, you get to play about with a really nice range of up-to-date equipment, including numerous cardio machines and a wide array of weights. Plus, from my first impressions, it seems to be the gym of choice for a wide range of people - from housewives and bus drivers to students, meaning you won't be made to feel inferior by a load of model-esque sculpted gym bunnies when you pull your flabby form onto a treadmill (or at least, this has been the case in my experience anyway). The Spindles Gym also appears to have a decent sized pool, a sauna and (rather pleasingly) a steam room, so you can sit and blast all of the crap out of your pores whilst listening to their piped CD of various Liverpudlian bands Greatest Hits. Indeed, I would even go so far as to say that Spindles is possibly the only place you'll be treated to Echo and the Bunnymen's 'Killing Moon' whilst you're on the cross trainer. Rather intriguingly, Spindles also offers something called a 'Russian Shower' on their leaflets. I've yet to discover what this is, but preliminary queries appear to suggest that it involves having a bucket of freezing cold water thrown over you by an overweight and decidedly grumpy slavic person. So you might want to avoid that.

However even as a 'add on gym' to a hotel it is not the run of the mill. Built on it's own separate 'island' its very unique. Most of the modern machinery you find in all gyms is here and it does have a tv in the exercise room to watch while you're jogging those miles. It also has a small swimming pool about 1/4 of the size of the average gym pool. Includes it's own mixed sauna.
