Do NOT send your child here! Our 9YO was sent here after a 5-night hospital stay. We had no idea what to expect, did not know there were other choices. His main problem is behavioral; GenPsych does not handle behavioral issues. Still, they promised us they could help him. He hated it there. He hated going. He came home in tears some days. He was kicked out early after the staff failed to de-escalate a situation where he was triggered BY A STAFF MEMBER and lost his temper. No one claims to have witnessed this event. They still kicked him out and he felt like a failure. It was near impossible to reach anyone or have someone call back in a timely manner. No one ever took responsibility for anything. No one gave me any information. Everyone claimed to be "very busy" ALL the time, which should not be in *anyone's* vocabulary who are dealing with mentally ill children. And now they are overbilling us for services they told us nothing about, and never cleared with us beforehand. Our bill is more than $700 over what it was supposed to be! No one will talk to us about why this is, they just keep saying they will "check with insurance" and then they send another bill that's exactly the same. So, we are being billed for services that we were not told about, could not possibly have approved, which anyway clearly did not help our child who was kicked out early for something the staff should have avoided, and no one wants to talk with us about why this is happening. I wish we had never sent our child to GenPsych. They are the absolute worst. read more

I was in a very bad place when I chose to attend GenPsych. I was terrified to walk in the doors and had this image of one big room with a bunch of crazy people pacing around and employees giving the bare minimum of care. That was not the case. Everything that GenPsych did was thorough and taken seriously. They worked with me when so many others would not. I was in the DBT track which focused on learning DBT skills within a group environment. The therapists were knowledgeable, professional and always doing more than they should have been. Long story short, you will get out of GenPsych what you choose to put in, and if there is something holding you back, it won't be them. read more

Rude staff. I received the call that my child was up next on the wait list. I asked a couple of questions about the program and got very vague answers. I asked to speak to my child and the school before my child would start. I was told they'd give me 24 hours. I called within 24 hours after withdrawing my child from school and I was told the spot had been taken and they are no longer taking our insurance. Literally within 24 hours! I asked what I could do since my child was set to start. I asked for a referral. I was told let me talk to my supervisor and someone will call you back. Surprise... NO ONE DID. So I called the next day and the woman I spoke to had no response as to why I wasn't called back. She was rude and talked over me in a condescending manner. Burnt out employee or just plain uncaring person. Work elsewhere if you can't handle your job or be respectful to parents who are in crisis. read more

When I first started GenPsych, I had already been through the ringer of therapists and different approaches to treating my mental illness'. I was greeted with warmth and kindness every day by the entire GenPsych staff, and always felt incredibly heard and understood. Their DBT program really helped put my life back on track and allows me to live life to the fullest now. The DBT track really taught me skills to manage my distress and find effective coping skills. I was introduced to GenPsych PC (Livingston) by a very capable Independent Therapist with whom I had been treating with for about a year. Despite her best efforts, I was not making the progress with my mental health issues that we had been hoping for. It was not only negatively affecting my well-being, but even more importantly, that of my family. Things were really ... really ... bad. Admittedly I was very reluctant to make the change to GenPsych PC (Livingston), and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) I was placed in. My main concern was the Group Therapy format as I did not feel like sharing my challenges, nor did I believe anyone would care or even relate to them. I also thought for sure that the therapists would have to "broad stroke" each session to accommodate all in attendance, thereby limiting the chance of any individual progress. It took only minutes my first day to realize that all my preconceived notions were very inaccurate. Every day that I walked thru the doors of GenPsych PC (Livingston) I was greeted with pleasantries from the individuals at the front desk. They did a fantastic job as "the face" of the Program(s) and always made you feel welcomed. There is a pre gathering group for those wishing to attend where you would give a quick assessment of how you were feeling that day, with notes being taken each time by the attending therapists to inform the appropriate people to best serve the individual. Soon after the pre gathering meeting comes Group Therapy, where the morning session is utilized to present homework that we had each completed previously. While the Therapist in attendance would provide their expertise to the group, they would guide others (as needed) who would provide insight as well, drawing from their own experiences. While admittedly I did not like the idea of providing feedback at first, that feeling changed when I realized the genuine and non-judgmental efforts put forth by all. It was also reassuring to learn that I was not alone with some of the challenges I am living with. The afternoon sessions are spent learning new skills on different ways to possibly manage your life challenges. These sessions to are very useful and interactive, while again participation is encouraged for those who are able. The Program also consists of an individual session with your designated therapist on a weekly basis, as well as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner meeting for discussions and monitoring of medicine. Overall I found GenPsych PC (Livingston) to be an incredibly well-run facility, staffed with the most talented group of professionals in the mental health treatment profession. Their winning formula flows from the top with the Program Director (Catherine). The model that she developed for the Program is both very effective and well thought out in order to ensure growth for each individual. On occasion she would even sit in or lead a session, and her knowledge and style are quite impressive to say the least. The other therapist are all unbelievable as well (Felicia, Leslie, Manny, & Rebecca) as they know how to walk the "fine line" of professionalism and being human, knowing when to show personality, which makes them more relatable to all in group, thus extremely effective when they teach the DBT Skills. I could fill several pages with the talents of each of these individuals. A special kudos to my Individual Therapist Felicia who has skills beyond her years. Four months ago I went to a Program a broken individual, not sure where to turn next, and strongly doubting the effectiveness of Group Therapy. Although I have since graduated and continue the daily fight for progress, I now have learned some tools to better manage life. More importantly for the first time in over two years I have something that had been missing ... HOPE. This place is the worst for adult DBT. There were several other patients who made me feel uncomfortable, they dominated all the sessions with their own issues which weren't supposed to be discussed in group. I have an eating disorder and frequently was placed in a "trigger," situation. When people were discharged they would bring in cookies, cupcakes, etc...and this was not addressed by the group leaders. I have also been over charged, considering I paid my copay for each session. They repeatedly tell me that they will send me a bill so that I can see the itemized charges but they haven't complied, financially they are crooks. Especially since before enrolling I had to provide a credit card to debit each week. read more

1 perk. they offer telehealth. personally, my experience with the admin staff and therapist were sub par; lack of follow up, not remembering details about me that i'd shared during previous sessions. i understand its awkward and takes time to build rapport with a new therapist, especially electronically. i am open and flexible, but what upset me is each session we had, she had to refer to her notes as we started our sessions. it seems like a minor thing, but to me, it's an attention to detail. also, their front office staff does not respond to messages for days, sometimes weeks at a time. my insurance does not charge copays for telehealth visits(i spoke with the insurance and see my EOB where it shows $0.00 co pay due), my insurance co. called their billing department to verify i do not have a copay, but they ignored that and continue to ask me for a copay. also, my pharmacy contacted genpsych for a refill multiple times and never got a response. thank goodness my primary care doc was able to fill the RX. i thank god i had an alternative to gen psych. read more

My 13 year old daughter began attending the day treatment program in Livingston for Depression and anxiety. I was very apprehensive because of multiple bad reviews. However, I can't say we've had a bad experience as many have stated. She goes 5 days a week, for about 3 weeks now. The staff are generally very attentive. There may be a couple of lower level staff who have not been attentive enough, such as ignoring my daughter's request to see her therapist privately, which happened on two occasions. But the professional staff are great, in my opinion. Her therapist (Anne) shows genuine interest in her needs, and my daughter is very comfortable around her. They are helping to get the records for her to the child study team for me, and have been a great help in that process. The only part I'm not happy with is the Silvergate program. My child homeschools, and I was told it cost us $50/day for a silvergate teacher to help her with her work. If she was a public school student, it would be free. That is ridiculous, and as a result, my daughter's work is suffering. As far as counseling and the group therapies, my daughter really likes the program, and I'm happy we made the choice to send her here. read more

First of all, if you are choosing between GenPsych and High Focus, CHOOSE GENPSYCH. I know so many people who went to High Focus and all of them had negative experiences. GenPsych isn't perfect, but it's much better. I'm a teenager, and I've been to GenPsych's adolescent program twice. I had very different experiences. The first time was in September, and there was only one other person in the entire program. The second time was in January, and there must have been over thirty. I'm going to talk much more about my second experience, because most people will attend GenPsych at its busiest, and that's when its issues start to show. Depending on the time of year, the enrollment will change drastically. This is important to consider, because the biggest part of your experience there (just like school or camp) will be your interactions with the other teens. If you are socially anxious in crowds, or thrive when surrounded by lots of people, consider that when visiting and observe how crowded it is. GenPsych does not have it all figured out, but in partial care at least, it is a very positive environment. The therapists are very kind, helpful and considerate. It always felt very safe. Unfortunately, in its busiest season Genpsych is stretched far too thin to provide the best quality of care. The building itself just isn't made for that many people. Until they split us into smaller groups, we held every group session in one room, because it was the only room that could fit all of us. We ate lunch on the floor. The therapists often had trouble keeping us under control, and it felt a bit like an overrun public school. At some points, there was a spirit of teens vs. therapists; many of us felt we weren't being heard. There was a lot of drama in which the therapists didn't seem to understand who was at fault, at least from my perspective, and there just seemed to be a general lack of communication between us and the therapists, like we had to fight to get our voices heard. I also have some issues with the way the programs are set up. There is a CBT track and a DBT track, and they put almost everyone in DBT even when they communicated that DBT didn't work for them. Many of us had problems with Silvergate (the school program, which is half the day). Our tutor was helpful, but when you're depressed it's extremely hard to focus on schoolwork, and I wish they were more accomodating of that. When you drop down to IOP, you have an extra study hall, on top of two hours of school, which really seemed like overkill. There was no process (when people talk about their day-to-day problems and the group gives them advice) in DBT, which many of us hated, because that can be really helpful. That's only in CBT. I wish there was some sort of optional process group. The music therapy was by far the best part; everyone loved it. I really wish we had it more than once a week. However much they're paying that music therapist, it isn't enough. The transportation was an absolute mess. GenPsych desperately needs to hire more drivers. I live 20 mins away, and it could take me an hour and a half or more to get there or back with all the stops. Both of my times at GenPsych I've started out on transportation, and then given up on it halfway through. My driver would show up at a drastically different time every day, basically anytime from 8 to even 10 (meaning he CAME to my house an hour after the program STARTED). It got to the point that one of the therapists asked me why I was always late. My parents angrily called and emailed the front desk many times before he began to come on time. I don't blame the driver-it's GenPsych's fault for overwhelming them with so many kids to pick up. Also, the afterschool program is very disorganized. They clearly put much less effort into the afterschool program than partial care. One of the therapists we had was terrible at keeping order, and people would openly talk about su***de attempts and self-harm, which was helpful for some but pretty triggering for me. Overall, GenPsych is built on a great foundation of caring therapists and good programs. However, I believe they need to expand their facilities and staff to meet the growing demand for their services. They need to hire more drivers; create more communication between the teens and the therapists, especially at their busiest, so we don't feel like we're fighting the staff; change the program structures to meet our actual needs; and put more attention into the afterschool program, because that was an absolute shitshow. They may have made some of these changes in the 3 months since I left, though I doubt it. If you're choosing between GenPsych and High Focus, absolutely choose GenPsych, but I don't feel comfortable giving a positive review when my experience was, on the whole, a negative one. read more

I had a fantastic experience at GenPsych Livingston. I personally went down the partial care / mental health iop track and I cannot recommend this center enough as a safe and constructive place for recovery. The tools are all there for someone to succeed, but it is also up to the individual to put in the work towards recovery. Most of the staff is fantastic and have their own styles of facilitating groups. It is an excellent place for group therapy and for providing structure when you're building up from rock bottom. I attended GenPsych as a patient in the DBT program. I've done dbt several times before at other places, but this is the first place I've been able to actually apply the skills. I am now 6 months out of treatment and still use dbt skills nearly every day. They've just given me tools to make life a little more live-able. I really do not recommend this facility my daughter been there for more than 6 weeks trying to get better. The therapy was not helpful at all. My daughter still feel the same. I attended the GenPsych Livingston location as a partial care patient for the dbt track. After experiencing extremely unprofessional therapeutic care, I chose to transfer to a different location after less than a week. In the Livingston location, I had an unfortunate experience and was assigned an APN who allowed her personal opinion of patients to dictate her level of care. A treatment plan for me was devised without speaking to me, and I was assigned to a track that was not fitting for me. The APN and therapist assigned were very condescending and the intake was not comprehensive at all, leading me to receive subpar care. After a few days, I requested to have my provider switched from the APN to Dr. Platt, who I heard great things about. My request was denied on terms of me not providing sufficient reason, and when I provided more information it was ignored. If you are still reading, please know not to write off GenPsych as a company - this review is for the Livingston location only. I transferred to a different location and was pleasantly surprised at the professional environment and level of care. read more

GenPsych in Brick was a huge help for my teen daughter that suffers from depression and anxiety. As a parent I was at a breaking point and her Psychologist recommended to pull her from school to attend their partial care program for teens. Lisa, at the front desk is the best and always helpful and understanding. The therapist and aids are all very caring and have a good understanding of what teens these days deal with. Dr. Grosu is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell that he truly wants your child to get better and tries his best to encourage them. I am not a fan of perscription medication and he will try his best to find ways on comprimising and prescribing low dosages to start out with. The program gave a much needed break from her school enviroment where most of her triggers are and she was able to almost keep up with her school work while she was there. Note to parents.......I would recommend getting your child diagnosed prior arrival. Stay in touch with your child's school and teachers. Getting work sent to the program was difficult and can cause your child to fall too far behind. There are a few negative aspects that I will point out though (hoping it helps prepare others). 1. Your child will adjust to the new routine and it will become a safe haven for them but when it comes time to discharge, it is very scary for them to go back into their regular environment and they may resist. 2. Teens may think that prescription medications are going to fix their problems and can easily get over prescribed, plus parents can easily feel that if they don't allow their children to take multiple prescriptions that they may lose their child. The kids there will talk about their medications that they are on etc. (keep in mind, they are teens and that's just normal) It's a rough and scary road and you should always do your own research. 3. Dr. Grosu can be a bit intimidating at first and speaks with an accent. Your child may not feel comfortable at first but he means well and will be able to work with you if you can communicate with him and he will compromise with you but you will need to speak up and ask questions. 4. Keep in mind it's a business. It's not a luxury facility nor do I think it should be. The program was helpful and I would recommend giving them a try. The staff does truly care. read more

I almost never write reviews but I kind of feel an obligation in the situation. I cannot speak to the adult program but the child/adolescent program was awful. To be honest, our son was relatively happy with the program and staff but my wife and I could not believe how poor the communication with us was. We literally had to beg (numerous calls and emails) for updates on progress and refills of prescriptions and nothing was ever received by the first date on which it was promised. The staff was polite and friendly when you spoke to them but it was incredibly frustrating to get in touch with anybody other than the receptionist. Nobody was ever available to speak to you at dropoff and pickup time. I would be very hesitant to return to GenPsych. read more

Coming in to GenPsych, I was manic, angry, and self-destructive. Having just come from a psych hospitalization, I thought GenPsych would be a song of the same tune. I thought I'd be treated like a patient more than a human and I expected that we'd all be sitting around tables coloring while someone jabbered on about loving yourself. I could not have been more wrong. Right away I noticed the counselors were real people with adamant interest in my personality and my mental health. They wanted to get to know me and they were passionate about processing my emotions and behaviors with me. They managed to get me excited about getting better. I recommend this place to everyone. GenPysch meets you exactly where you are at, it is not one-size-fits-all mental health treatment. Without what I learned at Genpsych I don't know that I'd be here today. I am so grateful for the counselors and the quality of treatment there. They even have art and music therapy! Such an awesome place. read more

I cannot express enough how amazing the GenPsych program is. The entire staff was so great and helped me through every obstacle. I have learned all the coping skills i will need to thrive once I leave here. The environment is tremendous and makes you feel safe, and able to talk openly and challenge yourself to grow and become the best version of yourself. And again, the staff helps you every step of the way. I wont lie that I didnt want to come at first, but I am so grateful I did. They truly saved my life here, and I would highly recommend it. Don't send your child here unless you want to lose them. Genpsych is a psychiatric mill that is primarily interested in billing Insurance companies and secondarily interested in expanding its locations. Their internal communication, their external communication, and the care offered to their patients is truly horrible. The counselors are too young, inexperienced and rotate from group to group so the patient has no continuous support. Medications are administered by nurse practitiioners, some of whom have little to no medical experience and merely process through the current medication regardless of the patient's condition. This is really a bad place, it's time the state of New Jersey get involved. read more

I could not speak more poorly of this facility based on my misfortune of speaking with Ms. Nadine Oakley, front desk staff, at the Livingston office in regards to a acute psychiatric concern for a family member after being referred to this facility. She was beyond rude and condescending. As a physician myself this manner of communication when speaking with family members genuinely concerned for a loved one is completely unacceptable and inappropriate. I highly recommend avoiding contacting this facility for help unless someone else happens to be in charge of facilitating phone calls, and Ms. Oakley could use some further training in respectful communication which I believe should be a basic requirement for her job position as the first point of contact for those calling regarding mental health concerns. read more

As a professional in the field myself, I was very careful about who I wanted treat my daughter for her personal issues. I heard about GenPsych from a classmate and decided to give it a try. Of course my daughter's specific situation is confidential and I won't go into details, but her therapist Nicole P. was AWESOME! I loved the rapport she was able to develop with my daughter and after that, the real work began! Nicole was professional and kept me up to date with my daughter's treatment. The program itself seemed to be working well for my daughter as she enjoyed the groups offered by GenPsych staff. However, I really didn't care for the Dr. assigned to my daughter at this location as she was pushy about putting my daughter on medication when they were not necessary. I know in some cases, medication is suggested and even needed for some individuals, but in my professional opinion, I was dead set against it for my daughters particular case... (that was the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) I like the fact that they provided transportation, however, it was only one way (either GenPsych would bring them there and they would need to be picked up by you OR you could drop them off and the GenPsych driver took them back home). Additionally, depending on your insurance, the benefits will make it to where the program is cut short, so make sure you get the most out of it before your insurance decides not to cover you any longer. Otherwise you will have to pay out of pocket and it is NOT cheap... Overall, I am truly satisfied with the services provided to my daughter, she has really turned around and is back to the happy-go-lucky, sweet teenager she was before she started going through her "growing pains"... I think adolesence should be a diagnosis on it own!!! LOL So thanks to many, many prayers, to GenPsych, and to Nicole P. for being an EXCELLENT therapist :-) read more

After my divorce, I fell into a deep depression. I really didn't see any light at the end of the tunnel. I had a suicide attempt and was hospitalized for about a week. First off I'll like to say the GAP program is an awesome program. The young lady at the front desk has great customer service skills. The Program Admin is great also. She was very informative during the orientation. The security and the other teens were friendly to my daughter. My daughter therapist was awesome with her and made her journey a success. I would recommend this program to any parent who teenager is depressed or has severe anxiety issues. They will treat you and your child with respect as well as teach them the skills needed to cope with everyday life. Awesome Program!!!! read more

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE do NOT come here. During the psych evaluation, they put on a nice big show for you, and once you're in it's a joke. I am someone who has been in therapy for four years, I am 18 years old, and I am well in-tune with myself and my needs. Despite my efforts, they placed me in their IOP DBT track, when I had previously already learned all my DBT skills and I use them frequently; they just don't quite do the trick for me. DBT track has NO time to do a process group, where you get to vent about the things happening in your life, but rather, we get DBT group after DBT group. For someone who could use those skills, great. But for as for me, I was completely and totally ignored. Your opinion on your own treatment does not matter to them and everyone is treated as if they were a baby. Also, if you so much as even laugh, your therapist thinks you're not taking your treatment seriously. Their school, Silvergate, took a week and a half to get me work, so I am incredibly behind. If you need to see your therapist or the psychiatrist, you put a slip in in the morning. On numerous occasions for me, it went completely ignored. This place will fuck you over BIG time, and their evaluation is all a facade. read more

If you need your medication adjusted this is not the place. Very disappointed in my treatment. The place was quick to bill my insurance but not inclined to provide any care. I went to GenPsych because I wanted to specifically learn DBT Therapy. I was suffering with depression and anxiety and really struggling to get through the basic functions of life. I had previously done traditional therapy for many years and although I was very aware of my anxiety, I did not know how to change my behaviors so that I could manage my anxiety levels before they were out of control. The DBT training I got from the staff at GenPsych is helping me do that. It is comprised of 4 modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. I got the most benefit from the DBT groups - there is one for homework and one for learning a new skill each day. The day you arrive you get a binder of the DBT program. You are taught skills within the 4 modules and then assigned homework to practice the skill. Christine Reilly (the therapist in charge of the DBT program) is very good at explaining and teaching the skills. She's also constantly asking the clients for feedback about ways to improve the program. If we were in a session and she sensed the group was confused, she'd find an alternate way to explain the skill and it was so helpful. Some other great DBT therapists are Manny and Catherine Macken. I personally found the groups so beneficial because you learn so many things by hearing other people work through issues. I have spent 20 years repeating the same behaviors that just make me feel stressed out and exhausted - feeling that there was no way that I could ever figure out a way to change them and feel better. Now I know there is a way I can change the way I react to my feelings and I can be happy. I would recommend GenPsych's DBT program to anyone who is looking to find a way to finally understand, manage and change their reaction to anxiety and find a way to make a life worth living. read more

I've been in and out of treatment programs since I was 14 years old. Now, at 34, I'm finally getting the help that I need. Finally, I have therapists that actually listen to me. I would recommend GenPsych to anyone who has tried other facilities and haven't gotten results. The front desk staff is friendly. Even the van driver was a nice guy.
