I am a Hockessin resident and get my hair cut at Hockessin Barbershop about every other month. This…read moreshop is the the kind of place you envision in your mind when you think of a small town barbershop. I gather lots of local and not so local police officers and firefighters come here for cuts. The client is young and old, though mostly male. The atmosphere is friendly and owner Eddie is always smiling and seems eager to provide good cuts, and good conversation at a fair price. At $16 bucks for a standard cut as of 11/20/14 this seems like a pretty standard rate and if you are a burly man rockin' a beard this includes a trim up of your facial hair, not a bad deal. This is not a wash and dry establishment but a straight forward no nonsense place to get your haircut. If I was to have one complaint it would be that the shop is showing its age, it was recently repainted but could use a little more of a refresh, but then again its a traditional barbershop and is not pretending to be a day spa or salon and the work stations and tools in the barbers hands are in good shape and otherwise orderly so this is merely a minor aesthetic observation. It is one worth noting though as their is local competition and perception is a reality for many customers whose first impressions are very impactful. It is also worth pointing out that this shop is not often very crowded so wait time is generally minimal and the barbers seem open and attentive to the customers direction, though my personal experience opinion on their skill is limited as I am simple "#1 all around and fade the neck" type of guy. Hockessin Barbershop is worth a look if you've never been and value supporting local small businesses and are looking for a quality cut from some quality people at a fair price.

They didn't have any availability, but the receptionist, Emily, offered me $5 off my next visit. 4 months later, found the card and decided to try them out. So glad I did. Josh was my barber. Friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Had a great conversation and did an amazing job with my haircut. We had a grand old time, Josh is a brilliant conversationalist, and we talked the whole time about life and the universe. Take note, they wash your after your haircut not before. This makes a lot more sense to me. Faith did my shampoo and conditioner and WOW!! This lady does not play. Faith's regular shampoo is better than scalp massages I actually paid for. She is the real deal. She takes pride in her job. Simply amazing. As I'm settling the bill, they present me with a welcome package (see pic). I think she did a pretty good job, but as soon as I got here I noticed the staff and clientele were older and I do think the style they gave me wasn't the most flattering for my age. Biggest hair mistake of my life…read more I was drawn by the stellar reviews, acceptance of walk-ins, and inexpensive prices. For nearly 7 years I've cared for my hair myself and watched it grow to its thickest, longest, healthiest point ever. All my years of work were undone with a simple blowout. After the blowout my hair felt straight and luxurious. After I washed my hair it started falling out by the fistfull. I lost enough hair to pile on 2 dinner plates and now my hair is shoulder length and so much thinner. I wish these women had the professional ethics to let me know they couldn't safely straighten my hair. 6 months later I'm still suffering.

I'm not from the area and ended up driving about 45 mins to arrive, yet do not regret it one bit!…read more When I first walked in, my first impression of the place was that they mean business. Everyone was working diligently and paying close attention to their client's hair. The place was fogging up from all the smoke from the hair equipment so they had the back door opened. I didn't know what the routine was since it was my first time at the location. They looked at me and smiled and one lady asked me what I was getting done so I told her a wash and set and that my hair was natural. Being African American with kinky hair after it's washed can be an issue at Dominican hair salons; they're always offering a perm. Not this one. She said no prob, write my name and I can take a seat. I noticed some women getting their weaves washed and styled, as if it were their own and it looked good. That's def something to consider if you wish to get your weave washed. They have a little waiting area up front with magazines and the atmosphere is quite relaxed. They called me over in about 15 minutes for my wash, which is pretty good timing, especially on a Saturday. After my wash, I waited about 7 minutes for the next lady to roller set my hair. I think I was scheduled to be under the dryer for 45 mins to an hour. After about 37 minutes, I needed to put money in the meter. By the time I came back, someone else was placed at my dryer. I asked what's next, they asked me to sit in chair # 3. I was happy because that dryer was HOT lol ...and right away, a blonde Dominican lady came to blow dry and style my hair. She was awesome. We had great conversation, she put me at ease. I could speak a bit of Spanish so I'm not sure how much of a language barrier could've existed if I didn't (another lady speaks pretty good English so either way, they'll understand you). It was a great experience! I didn't feel her burning my scalp with the blow dryer. She was pretty quick. I asked her to focus on my roots since my ends are getting so thin, she listened. She gave me a nice trim. She listened when I asked her not to cut too much (I had to let her know that she could cut a little more, even... which is nice since to some, trim means chop). She curled it nicely and recommended I get a bonnet to sleep at night and run my fingers through the curls in the morning. She made me feel fabulous in her chair and I left the salon feeling like I was on top of the world :) My hair is a bit passed my shoulder when straightened. I did not get the deep conditioner, so I cannot comment on it. My wash and set, plus curling the ends with a flat iron and trim cost me $37. The other place I was considering going that morning was charging $57 and up, for a press and curl ...so this was a pretty good deal. One other thing, some of the clientele that walked in seemed a bit iffy but then again, I am not familiar with the area and the people in the neighborhood. Nonetheless, no one bothered anyone so it was fine to me. I would def recommend this place to others and will consider driving that 45 minutes again if I need to.
