I'm stunned that someone would have given Gentlemen's Quarters a single star. I've been a devotee to Ms. Wong for over 15 years, following her from LA Looks (or whatever it was called in Five Points South at that time--it's a Starbucks now) to her shop in Homewood. Even when I didn't have a car in graduate school, I walked the 2 miles to Homewood to get my hair cut by her. Ms. Wong cuts/styles hair according to the wishes of the customer. Her work is not 'cookie cutter' men's styling like so many barber shops and hair salons perform. Nor is her business gimmicky, i.e. not a sports bar with hair stylists that look like they came from Hooters. She spends time on the cut. Most of my hair cuts have been 30 minutes or more because she's a perfectionist. My nephew, who sports a buzz cut is in the chair at least 15 minutes. In other words, her cuts are quality jobs, no matter how simple. If Mr. Kevin P. wanted his hair washed, he should have told her. Once you become one of her customers, she remembers practically all of your idiosyncrasies. For instance, she knows that I like my hair short over the ears, super short in the Summer and long in the Winter, and washed out after the cut because I can't stand cut hair falling off my head the rest of the day. I don't have to remind her. You get a hair cut by the owner of the business, not an employee. She takes the job seriously because her livelihood depends on it. And to put a point on this comment, the day she retires I will panic. read more

I've been wanting something completely new for quite some time now, so I let my hair grow out and chose Gentlemen's Quarters by chance because I was going to be visiting some friends in Birmingham. Upon entering, I was greeted by name with a handshake and a warm smile. I basically asked Eva to look at my face and give me something she thought would compliment it. After 40 minutes of very pleasant conversation, she put the final touches with the razor for layers and styled it and I was incredibly pleased with the results. I left from there to go out for the night and received nothing but compliments for my completely different look Overall, I highly recommend Gentlemen's Quarters to anyone in the Birmingham area. The haircut itself is well worth the price, and Eva is incredibly personable and friendly. I'll probably be scheduling my haircuts around my visits to Birmingham in the future. read more

Ms. Wong has been cutting my hair for almost 8 years. I have thick curley hair that is not easy to cut. Ms. Wong has a gift and she is a very talented lady. She always gives me a great cut and I would highly reccomend her to anyone. She was actually cutting my hair one day and a lady walked in with her son and told Ms. Wong that "she had given her husband the best haircut of his life and could she please cut her son's hair". Ms. Wong goes way out of her way to meet my hectic schedule. I am in sales and travel quite often but she does what ever she can to work me in even at the last minute or meeting me on a Saturday! Cool place! Gentlemen's Quarters is just that, It's not just a place to get a perfect haircut, manicure, skincare and hair removal but also a relaxed atmosphere to escape. Eva, the owner, was very attentive to my hairstyle. She took her time consulted with me and she used the scissors, clippers and even the straight razor to perfect my haircut. She said if I was not satisfied I could come back at no charge within a week, but I was very satisfied. She only charged me $35.oo for services that I had been paying $60.00 for at another salon. Eva has cut my hair every since I moved to the Birmingham area back in 1996. Even though my place of employment has changed from being less than 1/2 mile away to more like 25 miles, I still continue to go see her. I don't trust just anyone to cut my hair, and she always gets it right. I never give her much notice but she always seems to find a way to work me in, even if it means coming in on what is usually her time off. Cash only. It's the 21st century, there're tons of options for small businesses take credit cards. Therefore I had to walk to the nearest bank in order to get cash. Eva, although sweet, cut my hair in all of 5 minutes. I've never had my haircut I just electric razors. Ever since I was 10 I've always had the barber razor cut the sides and scissor cut the top. Expecting this haircut to be within $15-$20 range. And it ended up being $30! Left with a bad haircut. Hair everywhere from the razor. I definitely do not recommend. read more

Eva is great. I am very picky about haircuts and I have told her many times that before I went to her I always left wherever it was slightly unhappy but that never happens with her. I have always left happy. I have been going to her once a month for 3 years and she really knows what she is doing. I am losing my hair slowly but she still manages to make what I have work.
