We drove 6hrs to go hike the Serpent Mound effigy and see the burial mounds. It's a must see!…read more While there we met the nicest lady on the trail that told us so many fascinating things about the area and park. We asked her questions about places to buy local rocks, arrowheads, books...other than the gift shop. She told us we could go check out her shop and collection if we'd like. We're so happy we did! We got to meet her other half who is a literal living breathing encyclopedia of fossils, stones, gems, local history, local lure... His fossil collection was in the Smithsonian. AMAZING welcoming owners and place. We bought his book and got it autographed by him. We also bought souvenirs, rocks, post cards... very reasonably priced. We highly recommend visiting them after tge Serpent Mound.

This little rock shop and trilobite gallery is every bit as untidy and confounding as it is…read moreauthentic and charming. The shop itself features fossils, minerals, jewelry, and works from local artisans. And its centerpiece is a somewhat dilapidated but impressive display of trilobites that once was housed at the Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian. What explains this oddity? It seems to be the life work of Thomas Johnson, a local aficionado whose obsessive search for fossils keeps him preoccupied in this small corner of Ohio. When we visited, Johnson's shirt was still dusty from a morning dig. I asked him if the trilobite collection was the result of his own efforts, and he made it clear that it's "in progress". He showed us a piece of trilobite he'd found in the rock that very morning. Nobody's gonna mistake this place for the Smithsonian. But if you dig a good fossil, you'll see a couple here.
