The most welcoming and comfy, the best for my budget, and the one surrounded by the most scenic beauty. I may have stayed only one night but I loved the breakfast I was treated to the next morning and the night before the staff helped me pick out a scotch that I really liked and wanna find now that I'm back in the states. Only negative would maybe be that Uber drivers are willing to dropoff, but not pickup, from this spot (too rural? - idk, really only seemed like a 15-20 min ride from the heart of Edinburgh) But there is a train station only about a 10 min walk from the really quaint cottage atmosphere you're going to get if you stay here. Again, cannot recommend The Sun Inn enough - would absolutely love to stay here if I find myself across the pond again!

It is more upscale than other bed and breakfast accommodation in the town and you will be well cared for here. I found the staff more professional than warm and cozy but this is not a negative, just a sense. They were unfailingly pleasant and helpful. We were in a family room which was huge. There was ony 2 of us sharing but it would easily have accommodated 4 people with room to spare and the whole hotel was spotlessly clean. The food was excellent and very good value for money. There was a great choice for dinner and, while breakfast was described as Full Scottish Breakfast, you could virtually ask for whatever you wanted. I overhead several people asking for various combinations of breakfast items and it didn't phase Anoinette (the owner) one bit. Actually, nothing really phased Anoinette one bit she bent over backwards to make sure we felt very much at home. This hotel has a lovely relaxed and very friendly atmosphere and all of the staff were comfortable chatting to you as they went about their business. The quiz night on the Saturday was a great laugh and really encouraged all of the hotel guests to mingle and chat with one another. Beware, however, the Hotel Team they cheat mercilessly! Can definitely recommend this place and very much look forward to going back again.

The food in the Bistro and at breakfast is fantastic, it's a shame I didn't manage to try the tweed restaurant as the bar was set very high. The room was very large, as was the bed with very good furnishings and large bathroom. It fell down on the extremely weak shower performance and an old, low down TV. The location by old Abbey and the grounds of the hotel are simply spectacular. With views and grounds like these why would anyone need a TV? The hotel will loan cycles and rods for those who want to fish or explore the area. Although don't forget that fishing for Salmon or Sea Trout on a Sunday is still illegal in scotland. The hotel room guide also quaintly reminds you that although they allow legal fishing, it is 'unethical to fish for trout on a Sunday' I'd love to give this hotel 5 stars but cannot bring myself to do so as the shower was just too poor. However, would I go back? Hell yes, this is the best hotel experience I've had in a long time and will seek it out if I'm ever in the Borders again.

Our room was a standard room I think, on the ground floor. It was very spacious with a bed roughly the same size as China, 2 armchairs and a dressing table. The bed and pillows were so comfortable I could happily have taken them home! The bathroom was also spacious and well-equipped, my one complaint would be the water pressure of the shower (slightly like a kitten licking you clean!). We did not dine in the restaurant but attended a Christmas party night in the hotel - the food was fantastic, surprisingly so, as these buffet style things are usually not up to much. The main course of buffet carvery beef and turkey was fantastic - the beef melted in the mouth! Breakfast was a little disappointing (who on earth toasts potato scones!?) but plentiful. The grounds are beautiful, have a stroll around. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the front desk staff. All in all I would recommend it, and would return here for a romantic weekend or to relax.

The menu is based around traditional Scottish ideas - steak and ale pie, haggis-neeps-and-tatties, and the like, but these dishes are well executed and nicely presented. Of late, menus have become a bit more adventurous, and the quality of materials and cooking continues to rise. Given that this pub is part of a chain, I can't see it ever aiming for a Michelin star or even "fine dining" status, but it is way above the typically dire standard of pub food in Scotland and on the very short list of places we are willing to go to for a meal out in south Edinburgh.
