As many times as I've moved away from Oakland, I've always found my way back to Kaye's. I used to practically live in the place when I first moved to 41st. It's the epitomy of a cozy, neighborhood bar that hasn't changed a bit in the last thirteen years. Dave's a really nice, personable guy and a solid bartender. Chett, not so much. I once saw Dave jump over the bar and cut somone's clothes up with a scissor, but I'm sure the person had it coming. read more

A real dive bar, not a hipster-ish dive bar, which means shabby decor and no frills. However, the bartender was friendly, the beers on tap were good, and the prices were cheap. Worth a stop if you're looking for an economical place to drink. read more

i'll admit it, im biased. i live upstairs from this place, and its a major perk to the neighborhood. the drinks are cheap, strong, and served with a side of awesome jukebox and rockin' bar tenders. AND they keep treats behind the bar for my dog, so its pretty hard not to love this place. so show up, bring your dog, and make some friends. this will be your new favorite dive. read more

Great neighborhood dive on an unassuming stretch of Broadway - drinks are poured with a heavy hand - $5 well Manhattans - maybe not the most carefully crafted cocktail, but solid and strong. Great place. Very small local pub. Bartenders friendly and drinks generous. Had a fabulous time. The atmosphere is right out of "Twin Peaks." If looking for laid back place to drink, you can not beat this bar. Very pleased, and I am a tough critic. You can smoke, so if you are not privy to this, probably not the place for you. read more

Kaye's is my living room when I'm not in my living room. Dave is the uber-bartender who knows all, and will keep you at the bar way too long if you're not careful. Lots of interesting locals, art students, avant-garde musicians, dogs, and what-have-you. A world unto itself, Kaye's reperesents the non-slick, rusting underbelly of Oakland, and we like it that way. Bukowski, Lebowski, Chaucer and the crew of a B-17 all at once. Cheers. read more

It was a slow Sunday evening at this bar, with about five people sitting at the bar when I came in. I asked the bartender what the well whiskeys were - he acted all offended but told me. A nice guy at the bar plunked a fiver on the bar and said "I'll buy him a shot." But the fat bartender said "No way, I don't like his attitude." Just cuz I asked what the well whiskeys were! This is one quality bar. One of the best places to meet a group of friends, drink whiskey and relax. There is not much of a scene (a plus, in my opinion), just bartenders with the right mix of friendliness and stern-eye. read more

A bar without pretention, a hard title to come by in Oakland these days. It's a place where you come in for the first time and leave as a regular. Where the dice games are always happening and has the toughest juke box in the planet. Beware the squimish, those that are cigarette nazis, the place is always up in smoke. Roll in and watch the remainder of the a's game, sip on some whiskey with a PBR chaser, talk flying with Dave(the best bartender in town, who is also a pilot) and enjoy the evening. read more

First time here, shortly after moving in, my friend and I thought we'd go bar-hopping in the neighborhood. Two drinks in, and we're about to move on-- somehow Dave convinces us to stay for another several hours until they close with some combination of free drinks/shots and entertaining conversation. I don't think I would've made it home that night if we'd gone any further (I live a couple of buildings up the street). Guaranteed to be entertaining on any visit. read more

My favorite neigborhood dive bar. Guiness on tap, attractive and friendly bartender, dogs are welcomed, good mix of community re age/race/politics/personalities etc. Whatever kind of conversation you're seeking (or that the universe wants you to have) is possible. Lots of regulars here, which is nice. Everyone is very friendly. For a while there was a freaky doll exhibit on the wall, but that's gone now. (Phhewww). You really should come here. read more

The bartender/owner acts as the Subconscious of North Oakland. (Smoking is no longer allowed inside, but they fought the good fight.)

I give this place four stars when Dave the owner is working (Tu-Sat nights) because he is a great conversationalist bartender. Knowledgeable on many subjects and pours a solid drink with no attitude. Very fair prices basic bar drink selection. The day time bartender just kind of disappears and I haven't been there on Sunday nights so I don't know about that bartender. The crowd is mixed with all types of folks and friendly. Its really a nice scene if you like bare bones bars with character and characters. Also has a great juke box. Say hi to Dave's dog Archie. Everything in this bar epitomizes that dive bar characteristic. However, I was shocked to be charged $3.25 for a "pint" of Pabst Blue Ribbon. I've been here a few times and each time I wonder if I'm being ripped off for some reason or if this is the normal price for a glass of PBR. Who knows? I've read other reviews that say it's 2$ for a pint (which is fine). But this price is ridiculous. read more
