Can we be real, the George Washington Bridge (GWB) is a monumental feat of engineering and a stunning landmark, especially at night when the lights illuminate its impressive structure. But for those of us who regularly commute its span, it can be a bit of a love-hate relationship. With awe inspiring views, architectural marvel. The GW bridge is a vital connector serving as the gateway connecting New Jersey and New York to the New England area. Here is the downside of the bridge in my opinion only the toll fare has increased again, despite still having pot holes, insane traffic, and construction that has been happening for what feels like 10 years or more. Be prepared for endless traffic in both directions. It is a chaotic mess! Which is an understatement for the traffic during peak hours. Be prepared for bumper-to-bumper delays and endless honking. It can easily add significant delays to your journey. Tip: Avoid this bridge if possible the Tappan Zee aka Mario Cuomo bridge is less traffic, and less in toll. read more

Decided to walk across the bridge. It's not a bad bridge to go from New Jersey into New York City. However, be forewarned that avid cyclists do not follow the 15 mph speed limit and share the lane with pedestrians. Those enthusiasts ride fast and don't slow down and share the lane, at all. This leads to people walking closest to the sides and the noise emanating from the traffic next to you, drowns out the bikers as they zoom by. Thankfully, there are some cyclists who ride casually and will alert you as they're coming but the road noise drown out the warning that some bikers give. It's not until they are literally right next to you, that you'll hear them. No headphones for this walk. Walk in a single file for your own safety. It wouldn't be such a bad walk if it wasn't for those speeding cyclists. read more

This bridge is huge and amazing to see!! At the same time it's a chaotic mess! The traffic is crazy!! Bumper to Bumper, stop and go, horns beeping non stop! No one wants to let you in to get over at least that was my experience. With that being said. It's a beauty! And it's the connector to get to New England, you almost feel like your close especially for me since I was heading to Connecticuit from Philly. I felt like I was in New Jersey for forever. Crossing the George Washington bridge felt like relief! I look forward to seeing it again. I guess I'm torn lol! read more

The George Washington Bridge was cool the first couple of times I drove over it, mainly because I'm not from the area and it was really cool seeing Manhattan at night. Now, this bridge is just an inevitable nightmare when going back up to Connecticut to visit friends. I make my husband drive every time because I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack. Yes, I have had to drive the car and let me tell you, I'm white knuckling it the entire time. The drivers are rude, the traffic is too much, and dang it, this bridge is expensive! Merging onto this bridge can either make a man out of you or make you realize that you're a little too soft and don't belong here. I'm the latter. A trucker almost hit us as we were trying to merge onto the bridge, nearly pushing us into the guard rail...and I was the driver! I had to apologize to the man upstairs for what came out of my mouth that day. I'm not a fan of this route at all! Did I say it was expensive? However, this bridge needs to be updated overall. Especially on the NJ to NYC side. This place can be very daunting if you've never driven over the bridge. Besides the bridge being very expensive and going over a very long river you have to drive over a couple of times to get used to it. Lanes are very tight and you have to have steady hands and know how to maintain your lane because there's no room for error. Good job on the new bike path on ramps that opened in 2023 but the NJ side ramp loop adds an extra half mile to your ride, design could have been so much more straight forward. The look out points on both sides are a beautiful place to get photos of Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. If you are driving, just take the tunnel. read more

The George Washington Bridge (GWB) is a popular travel throughway to and from New York to New Jersey. I am not exactly fond of this crossing because it is always busy with traffic. But then again, what is not busy with traffic in the NY Metropolitan area. What was George Washington thinking about when he ferried over evacuating Manhattan with his American forces. I know we need a bridge built so we can avoid traveling on these overcrowded boats. Well, they built it and are still overcrowded. From what I read, GWB is the world's only suspension bridge with fourteen vehicular lanes and still the world's busiest motor vehicle bridge crossing. Meanwhile, it is an old architecturally designed bridge that one day will be replaced with modern technology that requires less maintenance. I believe many will oppose it since it is a beautiful historical bridge structure. read more

While the traffic can be atrocious, as with any large city, and many complain about the 16 dollar toll--the bridge itself is beautiful. It's even better now there is a clean, safe new walking and bike path connected to George Washington Bridge Park (free, completely fenced off from the traffic and river). It's an easy, level walk (though watch out for speeding bikers) with beautiful views of the palisades and river. Great opportunity for photos too. Also has a nice little overlook where you can learn the history of this architectural icon. read more

The GWB is usually my preferred method if I choose to drive into nyc. The tunnels are almost always gridlocked/bumper to bumper traffic, no matter the time of day. So, the GWB (lower level, specifically) is the winning route, most times. Still, depending on the time of day, your commute can be one of two things, free-flowing or road rage inducing. Either way, choose wisely and if you do not have EZpass, the toll will be billed to your residence. read more

We were amazed at the relatively low volume of cars on this dual level, suspension wonder, which boasts the busiest bridge in the world! Driving over this bridge brought back memories of the old Erector Sets by the Gilbert Toy Company where you can build not only bridges, but other metal skeletons! Pretty cool construction! Yes, there's a toll, no duh! Again, it's NYC! But frankly, it's worth the moolah to be connecting boroughs and saving time! Thanks GW Bridge! It's not your fault you're so popular and you attract traffic. You're still an incredible invention! I won't be burning my bridges anytime soon! This is a review of the Northwalk, the foot and bike path on the north side of the upper level of the George Washington Bridge. The views are totally amazing and the infrastructure is immaculate, everything looks brand new. But only two stars for the experience because the bikers are such complete A$$HOLES! Cyclists rip through at 20 to 30 miles an hour dinging their damn bells, really I'm not kidding, and expect pedestrians to vanish, basically, to get out of the path. You're taking your life in your own hands here as a walker. If you absolutely insist on walking this bridge, you can park in nearby Fort Lee historic park for about $3 an hour. read more

Do you live to sit in traffic? Do you love merging right before a lane ends in a wall or a divider? Do you love people that cut you off if there is more than 1 foot of space between you and the car in front of you? Do you love excessive traffic for absolutely no reason? This may be the bridge for you!!!! This bridge has it all! Horrible merges, horrible drivers, insane traffic, and the PA doesn't care in the slightest! I will give them credit that they can clear up an accident in minutes, but that is all that I give them credit for... Everything else about this bridge is horrible... This is clearly the most traveled bridge in the world. It has the worst traffic on a bridge in the world... It was not designed for 1/50th of the traffic that goes over it per day. I wish that they actually did something that helped move traffic over here better, but that is a pipe dream... I have been going over this bridge for years now and the only time it is ok is on Christmas Eve, and its slightly better in the summer. Otherwise if you get stuck in the traffic, it'll be an hour + to get over it... It is all the merging... Trucks aren't where they are supposed to be and try to cut people off at the last second causing tons of traffic... I'd say travel at night, but they usually close the lower and 1-2 lanes of the upper every night between 10pm-5am... I'd go Tappan Zee bridge instead... I wish I had something nice to say about this bridge, but there isn't. read more

Best way to come to Washington Heights. The hardest thing is figuring out where to get on if you're on foot, and the worst thing is driving across it. It pretty much is the only good bridge between New Jersey and New York over the Hudson basically. More specifically it connects Fort Lee to Washington Heights. This is a suspension bridge and it was once the longest one in the world. It carries a lot of traffic and getting through it is quite a feat. The better way across is by walking. It may even be faster. On the New York side is an entrance ramp that's at Cabrini Boulevard and 178th Street. It's on the south side of the bridge. The path closes for the night with the use of a few gates. Going across it can be fun. It has some great views from it. This also is much better than sitting in traffic. read more

Agreed that this is not a place to walk in peace. When reading the Port Authority website, it clearly states that pedestrians have the right of the way on the bridge, that the speed limit is 15 mph and bikers are encouraged to walk their bikes or yield to pedestrians. On the bridge itself there are tons of signs saying the same and reminding bikers of the speed limit. The path is divided into two sides - one to walk towards NY and one to walk towards NJ, like regular traffic. Unfortunately this is a shared path so both bikes and pedestrians have to share the path which is narrow when divided up. Also there are large groups of bikers who use the bridge walk. Most of them travel at a speed more than 15 mph but they are courteous and nice to bike in single file and keep a lookout for pedestrians. However once in a while you will get a bike who wants to cycle at high speed next to their friend in a large group and expect you to stop and hug the edge of the bridge while they bike into the other side of the path (entitled and lack of self awareness?). This in itself makes it dangerous for family walk especially people who have little kids who will probably need to be in a more controllable environment. Hopefully when the Southwalk is open, they will limit it to pedestrians only. In the meantime, they should put more signs up since obviously people are not reading them. read more

As for aesthetics, it's neat to look at during day or night. There are lights that run across the top of it in the darker hours, giving it a cool effect from a distance. The bridge itself feels safe and sturdy driving across. It's actually so wide that you barely notice you're on a bridge if you're in one of the middle lanes! I can't give it 5 stars because of the high tolls. read more

When it comes to bridges, the George Washington, or otherwise, the experience largely comes down to a Boolean outcome: did you get to the other side of, in this case, the Hudson River, or not. Based purely on this, it's tough to not rate a bridge highly where the moment in a static system when you traversed didn't result in your demise. Beyond that, style points must be accounted for, and, in the case of the GWB, a double-decked suspension bridge that also happens to be the most traversed bridge in the world (according to Wikipedia, but, sure, why not?), and the GWB has style abound. Sadly, every time I approach I am confronted with the dual worry of intense traffic and heavy fees for the privilege. Always such a nice bridge. It has been a long time since I've been on this bridge. Last time I went across it I walked the bridge which felt sort of unsafe as the cars are oassing you by. The side the looks to the water felt more safe as they have a fence covering the full top to bottom. Its a good walk if its only a walk but bikes use the safe walk path which makes it even mire dangerous to walk across the bridge. read more

As far as bridges go, this is probably my favorite. It's one of the largest suspension bridges and I've got a picture of it on my wall. You can get off at the last exit in NJ if you want to get your own view. You can walk or ride a bike on this bridge for a nice scenic route and sightseeing for few. I remember when the toll was 4$ and now I think it's almost 20$. If you have EZ pass, you can save time in line and money. If you don't have EZ and live in the NY/NJ area, it's about time you get it. I wasted a lot of time riding my bike around NY trying to enter the GWB a different way for a different scene on my return route, but you have to go back the same way you came. This is by far the bridge with the lowest incline and very flat for anyone who is a newbie or amateur at jogging or walking bridges. This is a double-deck bridge and is monitored and operated by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Located in Washington Heights and overlooks the Hudson River. Jogged this bridge and was lost to death on the entrance. There are a few entrances to get upstairs from the Manhattan side and once you're on the bridge, you are welcomed with swooshing cars and a rocky bridge. All I smell was gasoline and car exhaust blown onto my face as I jog, definitely not a clean bridge to go jogging because the pedestrian level is right alongside the cars so lots of noise and trucks going by. There are 2 levels on this bridge. Cars are on the 2nd level and connected to the FDR highway. Pedestrians have to remain on the upper deck. Once you cross to the Jersey Side, you are welcome to Fort Lee where there are many Koreans and Korean shops and restaurants and the Palisades if you go deeper in. For drivers, you have to pay one way going into NYC but at no charge or $0.00 for going into New Jersey. Currently, E-Zpass costs $15.38 for peak hours and $13.38 for off peak. read more

Bustling traffic and very often stop and go that could lead to a rear collision if you are distracted.
