George's Bar is wonderfully weird - we stopped here because it was near to other spots we wanted to check out. We liked it so well we ended staying longer than expected. The decor celebrates George is all forms - Clooney, Wendt but most importantly Constanza. You'll see several themed sandwiches (the only food served) the the Quitter and the Art Vandelay. There's a full bar, with a surprisingly nice wine offering. They describe themselves as a "friendly neighborhood dive bar" and indeed the staff and other patrons were friendly. Most weeknights, they have stuff going on - trivia, comedy etc. we caught a bit of the comedy show which was definitely interesting! Drop the George and keep the bar. With the name as George's Bar, there's so much Seinfeld potential for theming to be done out. Like 9 seasons of material. I expected so much more, and was politely let down. This could be any bar. This one just happens to have random pictures of George Costanza laid out along each wall. No, I don't get it. Or the quote wall art that looks hand made. It's like they started something, and then along the way gave up and jumped ship, forgetting all about what they started. George's Bar comes with options of drinks and toasties. But truth be told, the drinks were good. I had the George in Mexico and Summer Of George. Both were spot on. Not sure how they got their unnatural green color though. The margarita was apple jalapeno, very good combo taken up a notch with tequila. The Summer of George had Kentucky Fire cinnamon whiskey and apples, it was like apple cider with a good kick of liquor. The toastie that I had an incline for was The Dealership, purely a salty sweet dream. Pretzels and Twix, and Maple Butter, did your jaw just drop? Mine did, when it came to me in it's little lined basket. Oozing with sugar, I could've gotten diabetes just from eating that creation. read more

The only reason this bar gets 3* is because it is George Costanza themed. Otherwise, I wouldn't rate it at all. The small things were nice to see. The Frogger machine... The vending machine selling Twix (which they were out of)... The giving of pretzels that will, inevitably, make one thirsty... Yeah. They've done well. Unfortunately, they are not the master of their domain. The staff pretty well sucked. One girl was rude to me just because I'm American (no, I'm not joking)... The bar was very dead... The drinks were average... Until this bar decides to lick the metaphorical wedding invitation envelope and start over, I would advise going elsewhere. read more

I must preface, I've never seen a full episode of Seinfeld from start to finish. I came here purely to make all my American Seinfeld fan friends jealous. This place was completely underwhelming. Went on a Saturday night around 8, and the place was dead. I purchased the most expensive glass of coke I've ever drank and snapped a few pictures of the various George Costanza art pieces. I might have enjoyed it more had I been a Seinfeld fan, but even that wouldn't change the atmosphere, which wasn't bad, just not what I expected. read more

By George! Gotta get down to George's Bar! This is a legit George-themed Bar. It's mainly built around George Castanza from Seinfeld, but also features George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, Boy George, George Clooney, George Takai, George Jones, and more! I ended up coming in for trivia night, where they ask obscure questions about Aussie Rugby (I lost.) The prizes include pitchers of beer and bar tabs. The staff was really friendly, offering up explanations about the beers, and serving up bar munchies! They seem to have a focus on gins here, with a wide selection of local boozes. They made great recommendations on what to try out. The happy hour specials were greatly appreciated! The place was fun and laid back! They set up a DJ after the trivia was over. Overall, it was a really fun place to take down some pints! The place is rather clean, but the restroom could use some improvement, but it's a dive bar- so whaddya expect? If you're a Seinfeld fan, you gotta check out the George-themed artwork! read more

"Where's the Pastrami on Rye with Mustard?" Were my first thoughts as I looked over the tiny menu at George's Bar. As a die hard Seinfeld fan, I'm going to be harsh because I can be. It took me literally thousands of hours over years to know every bit of minutiae that comes with being a Seinfeld fan. The stuff in that bar was scratching the surface of that and boring. The owners had an opportunity to make something special. A true George Costanza homage, but as suspected they fell flat on their faces. We discussed at the bar and think that the owners aren't Seinfeld fans, more just business owners tapping into a Niche. All in all, lame and unimpressed. Great bartenders and fantastic service, no minimum EFTPOS, very decently priced drinks. Just an average bar in the North, with pictures of George Costanza everywhere. read more

I really wanted to like this place more than I did. I mean, it's a freakin' George Costanza bar!! As a huge Seinfeld fan, I enjoyed the little touches. The arcade Frogger machine was a highlight, and the walls are adorned with some great George tributes (and some pretty dodgy ones). Sadly, if there's one thing all Costanza fans know, it's that a George divided against itself cannot stand. And there's a division here. A juxtaposition between a genuine effort to cash in on a very popular niche, and a tangible lack of any atmosphere that could transform this from a theme bar to a great bar. George is the only good thing to find here. Everything else is average. Bar staff were unfriendly and almost dismissive when asked some pretty basic questions. The place itself was empty and sorely lacking a little something extra. Maybe there's a hope that the theme will distract from what's otherwise quite ordinary. A wise man once said 'a lie isn't a lie if you believe it', but I couldn't suspend my disbelief here long enough to properly buy into what seems a real waste of an opportunity. Lower your expectations and enjoy for what it is. read more

Don't bother eating here or coming to George's for "a few quiet ones" just forget all that! George's has become a great alternative to perseverance and the colonial for a place to get a bit messy! Saturday nights here are awesome, they consistently play 90s/00s which is kind of the soundtrack of all the bars in Fitzroy and the median age is about 25 so all the freshly 18 kids give this place a miss! When I visited George's bar soon after it opened, it felt like it was still finding its feet in the popular Fitzroy neighbourhood. The vibe is dive bar with a short cocktail menu, $5 toasties, and beer from Lion Corporation. The bar's theme is George Costanza, which comes in with pictures on the wall and a drinks menu with names like "the hand model" and "the summer of George." Rather than being all encompassing, it felt more along the lines of going to friend's place that likes themed house parties and always makes an effort to put some decorations up. The George Costanza theme generated a lot of attention and curious Seinfeld lovers packed the bar both times I visited. The first time a friend and I stopped by to check it out, they had run out of all the ingredients for the cocktails on the menu, save one. And despite the row of bottles on the back wall, our bartender seemed reluctant to improvise. On another visit, the loud music made the venue sound like party atmosphere from outside, but seemed out of place in a venue set up with conversational booths and tables instead of a dance floor. The owners certainly hit on a popular concept with the George theme and got people talking. It will be interesting to see if it's enough to keep people coming back. read more

George's bar in Fitzroy has received a huge amount of attention both locally and internationally. So last Wednesday we organised a group of us to see what all the fuss is about. George's is a bar that pays homage to George Costanza, the character out of the very popular TV show Seinfeld. The bar opens at 6pm, and we arrived around 5:55pm and there was already a crowd hovering at the entrance awaiting for the doors to swing open. Once the clock reached 6pm the doors opened and we were greeted warmly by the cool looking bar staff. Upon walking in the venue it had a very distinct New York vibe and style to it. Timber floors with white tiles on the walls. Now, not being a huge Seinfeld fan the theme was a little lost on me, a few George's quote and photos on the wall certainly got the punters camera flashing. The cocktail menu was limited and design with the Seinfeld theme in mind. From a Bloody George,which was their version of a Bloody Mary, to a Draped in Velvet, which had similarities to a Long Island Ice Tea. The beer list, whilst safe, had a good range of both local and international beers. The food menu was basically toasties and there was a selection of 5 to choose from. I had the New Yorker, which was hot salami, mozzarella cheese and tomato. For $5 it is what is. The crowd was a good mix of southsiders and locals and I got the feeling they too didn't understand the hype. So takeaway the Seinfeld connection and your left with a pretty cool bar. The service was on point and the staff certainly made sure everyone was having a good time. Time will tell if George's survive the fickle bar scene but I really hope it does. Would I return? Love it. I want to buy this bar and live in it, so I can keep reliving the awesomeness which is George's Bar. Thank you for an amazing night filled with laughter, tasty food, great tunes, and long chats. From the hilariously oversized and beautiful George mural on the outside wall to the great little Seinfeld figurines dotted around inside, George's Bar takes you to another place; Awesomenessvillia. The theme is cool, the surfaces are clean, the atmosphere is chilled, and the bar staff are the most friendly and passionate group of people I've met in a long time. The toasties are delightful (I had 3, and would've had more if my pesky stomach would simply expand), the craft beers are very moderately priced, and the simplicity of the menu is refreshing and clever. The Monday trivia night was fantastically hosted and a genuine laugh for all. The toilets are clean (a rarity in most pubs), and the decor makes you want to just walk around and look at everything while you sip your drink. The people who run this bar are a credit to the industry (the owner, the bar staff and anyone else involved) and my only negative is that there are not more bars like it...everywhere. I travelled 2 hours to get to George's Bar and would've travelled another 6. If you've watched at least one episode of Seinfeld, go to this bar. If you haven't, go to this bar. If you don't even like bars or have had a bad experience at one, go to this bar. I will be back. read more
