This school heard my concerns as a parent, welcomed him with open arms, lent us uniforms when we needed them, and gave him access to the amazing science curriculum. The teachers are amazing, warm, intelligent, and thorough. The students there are just so kind. They use state of the art tech, post assignments online, communicate well and LOVE the kids. The smaller setting is amazing. He loves going to mass during school. He is at peace. The other parents went out of their way to invite us over, make sure we were in the loop about school events, emailed us...Like a welcome wagon. One child was out when my kid started school on a family vacation and brought him home a "welcome to school" souvenir. My child is learning a lot, but more importantly, he loves school again. This principal is a great leader. Don't hesitate. Wish I had enrolled my child sooner.

Acton DC is the second micro school I visited, and I was pleasantly surprised when I witnessed a group of mixed-aged children during a Socratic discussion. They were engaged yet relaxed, opinionated yet respectful. You have to see those kids in action. That is the best way to know what the school is all about. You will see a classroom where kids talk and think most. Their guides (they don't call them teachers) support them in their learning journey. Their guides do a fantastic job of helping these kids to be independent thinkers and doers. My kids love their school!

I have 17 years of experience as a recruiter (mainly Microsoft, now Nike) and am honed in evaluating talent -- with schools, checking everything out, the student art on the walls, how the kids look, how the teachers interact with the children, how the environment feels, all of it. Harbor School is a special place in that the teachers are really exceptional -- exceptional care for the students, expertise, there's a healthy genuine feel to the school, the students look good. It's not a fancy hyper modern place, but note that it also doesn't come with a fancy hyper modern 40k tuition price tag. The school is real, and I think a gem. Sadly for us, we moved too far away from it, in Middleburg VA now. Our 6 year old is a bit school avoiding and so I recently called up Harbor School, where our dear friends with a 6yr old and 3 yr old attend, and I asked Andrea if she would be willing to tour me and my son again, let him be in the classroom of his best friend, let him see how his younger friend, the 3 year old, is also in school. She was gracious in allowing it, I spent a beautiful 15 minutes in the pre-k class, 2 students productive and engaged at each station. The 2 teachers were lovely, on the ball, inclusive to my son, it was just a wonderful visit. One of the teachers with 27 years of experience at the school. We got to see the art room, music room, the maker room with loads of hands-on crafts, and we spent 15 minutes outside at the playground in the back -- lovely space. You could pay more for a school, and help fund facilities that go with it, but common sense would advise checking out this lovely school that has keen focus on what matters most: recruitment of wonderful staff. I also valued the small teacher to student ratio I saw, which set the whole thing up for success. In terms of kindness/sensitivity/expert knowledge at the younger years, I'm definitely impressed with Harbor School. End of day, I think a young child benefits most from being surrounded by excellent compassionate teachers vs a shiny perfect gym that some schools with higher tuition offer. Apparently Harbor School is moving in a year, but I think this is a school that would be worth chasing after wherever nearby they relocate to. Being at Harbor School again yesterday I literally contemplated could we reasonably do the drive from Middleburg...sigh. But for Bethesda area parents you're in a lucky situation feels like to me, wherever they move, because they are taking their teachers and philosophy and humane student:teacher ratio with them.

They are up to date on growth mindset, mindfulness, hands on learning, flexible classroom space and sitting options, inquiry based learning, use of technology, etc. It's a traditional school with an innovative learning program. It has structure, but it is personalized and flexible to accomodate each student. We are in our final year at the Harbor School and very sad to be leaving this wonderful place.

I should say as a disclaimer though, don't come expecting some 5 star level cooking, if you are looking for that, you shouldn't be looking for a volunteer cooked meal anyway. But the ladies cooking here really did it up right. I had the boneless fillets, which were fresh, skin on, crispy and hot. Other main courses that were available were a whole fried fish, crab cakes and shrimp. With each main course you get 2 sides (macaroni, french fries, corn bread, green beans). I went for the macaroni and green beans and YUM. You also get a cute little juice box with it, so hey, why not. Everything I had was damn good, it felt like I was back in Michigan.. almost. One thing that really put St. Augustine's Fish Fry over the top though, was that THEY TAKE CREDIT CARDS. It is so rare for a church to do something like this for a cheap meal, but I was stoked. And better yet, the whole kitten caboodle cost $9. I shall be back friends, but only for your fish.. I am not convinced to come back for religious services quite yet.

We have had a generally positive experience here. Teachers have always been kind and my daughter enjoys going to school every day. There is an app they use that shares with families what their student has done during the day such as what they ate, when they napped, activities, potty, etc... My daughter has learned to play with friends and because of the curriculum taught each day, she has grown and progressed so much! My daughter will be starting PreK 3 very prepared and we are so grateful for the staff at KU Kids Deanwood.

We've believed since the start that the faculty really loved our daughter and always treated her with care. After the first few shy days and a few tears, she always entered the classroom with a smile and left with the same. Additionally, the community around the school has been lovely. Mothers and fathers alike are open and receptive to new friendships, and create a great, warm, diverse community. We love the curriculum. It's a wonderfully rich, traditional, liberal arts curriculum. The teachers, predominantly women in the lower grades, are fantastic. They love and care for their students as if they were their own children, which in some cases they are; And they clearly love their subject matter, which makes the classroom so much more vibrant. The final piece to the puzzle is the student body. They are so caring and kind to one another. There are your typical personality differences among girls but we especially love how the older girls care for the younger ones. I have every confidence that my girls will have moral support facing any problem they encounter, both from teachers and big sister students. The girls love going to school and are learning so much, academically, spiritually and emotionally. We would never think of sending them anywhere else!! Thank God and thank you Brookewood.

This school classified me as a 'foreigner' on my school records when I'm native cherokee, both my…read moremother and I. We didn't know this until my mother had my school records pulled from registration. I'm glad a lot of those staff were purged during the Michelle Rhee era. Now this school has a problem with missing//stolen money. I suspect they were receiving more money for kids labeled 'foreign' They didn't even put me in their year book even though I was the first kid to do two years in one and graduate early from this school. I was a poor//homeless student, mind you. So they thought they could label me as foreign because no one would care or find out. One potential thought was 'could it be racism?', but throughout my time after graduating, I traveled and bomped around down south. We learned that it wasn't racism, it's about fraud on the poor and homeless, those who are deemed vulnerable. You get to see both sides as one. The side that does right and the side that does wrong.

First as a photographer which led to a career in lighting design for concert tours ( such as Parliament Funkadelic, Cameo, and quite a few others). Young people!! Understand this! There were MANY PITFALLS along the way.This was NO GRAVY TRAIN by any means. Many nights I cried to myself and wished I could have turned back the clock. But stupid pride wouldn't let me. Too many friends and family busy patting me on the back telling me how proud they were of me and never knowing the person behind the smile. Now here it is 42 years later and still no diploma. My life behind the smile has been a REAL emotional rollercoaster. But enough about me. The point to this story is this. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY. Study and enjoy these years the will.... when you look back in the years to come really be the greatest years of your life.
