The first looks to be a younger soldier in a Confederate uniform holding a rifle, with one foot on a book. The older one looks to be an officer carrying a saber. He has a saber in hand. The monument reads: "Drowns of roses fade. Crowns of thorns endure. Calvalries and crucifixions take deepest hold of humanity. The triumphs of might are transient. They pass and are forgotten. What a great historical site. This is a diamond in the rough. A hidden Gem of a site…read more This site is north of Macon, Georgia by about 15 miles. It is off of the Jarrell Plantation road. Once you turn off the road, it is a very short drive to the visitor's center. There is a small parking lot (about 10 cars). The center is a very nice building with a counter manned by a ranger, a small movie about the site, and a gift shop. You enter and pay at the counter and then go on the self-guided tour around the site. The tri-fold brochure was very well done and describes the various parts of the site. There are signs at each of the various locations to describe the buildings and activities nearby. The site has houses from different eras. You can actually walk through them. There are engine house, blacksmith shop, evaporator house, wheat house, and more. There are paths to go around the site but some of them are steep so be careful. The entire sight was extremely informative and had a lot for any student interested in history. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this site to anyone interested in the history of the area. Enjoy.

It is a bit shaded by the structure and so it is in excellent condition or perhaps it has had a recent refresh since the 1957 installation. The marker points out the history of Sherman's march passing through Jackson. It reads, "On the morning of Nov. 18, 1864, the Right Wing (15th and 17th Corps) of General Sherman's army [US] moved from its bivouacs in and near Jackson toward Planters' Factory (Ocmulgee Mills), on the Ocmulgee River at Seven Islands (9 miles SE), to effect a passage at that point on pontoon bridges to be laid by the 1st Missouri Engineers, the pontoniers of the Right Wing. "Smith's division, 15th Corps (Osterhaus), which had camped near Flovilla, moved first. Upon arrival, the 1st Brigade (McCown), with the 4th Minnesota Infantry in advance, crossed on the ferry and entrenched on high ground east of the river. At 11:00 A.M. the pontoons arrived and, by 1:00 P.M., two bridges were ready. "That afternoon, Smith completed his crossing and camped two miles from the river on the Hillsboro road, to wait for Woods' and Hazen's divisions and to permit the cavalry to pass to the front. During the night, Blair's 17th Corps crossed and moved via Monticello and Blountsville to avoid the Hillsboro road. "On the 19th, Kilpatrick's cavalry division crossed, followed by Woods and Hazen and several wagon trains. Heavy rains having made the steep hills on the east bank extremely difficulty, the passage was not completed until the afternoon of the 20th, when Corse's division of the 15th Corps cleared the bridge site and, with the bridge train, followed the 17th Corps to Monticello." This is not a very busy library---but it is noisy. People talk here in an unrestrained voice and…read morethe staff does not enforce it. Seems like these library staff even encourage it since they seem to have the loudest voices and unrestrained laughter. People talk in the mobile phones in a regular tone of voice despite signs on each computer terminal to go to the lobby if they want to use their phones. The staff doesn't seem to mind it and they do not enforce it. This is not a library---more like a flea market where one are encouraged to socialize...where loud voices are encouraged with abandon. The number one practitioners are the staff---prima donnas at their best.

They have a very intensive calendar for Children, Young Adults, and Adults. The first time I stumbled in was simply to put in your documents and to use the computer. After seeing all that they offered I decided to bring my little man with me for Story time. Children's Section: The children's section of the library in sectioned off with doors and is a joy to be in. There is plenty of space to explore and a private room for more events. There isn't much out here in Rural Georgia though the Civil War obviously passed through here in…read morethe 1860's. This marker points out some of that history. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "On Nov. 17, 1864, Kilpatrick's cavalry division [US], which was covering the right flank of Gen. Sherman's army on its March to the Sea, moved from Bear Creek Station (Hampton), 30 mi. NW, down the north bank of Towaliga River to threaten Griffin and Forsyth. This threat caused the Towaliga bridges to be burned by Wheeler's cavalry [CS] to protect those towns and the large Confederate hospital centers there. "On the 18th, Kilpatrick's division reassembled here at Cork. Next day, it crossed Ocmulgee River at Planter's Factory (4 mi. E) and moved S to cover the front and flanks of the infantry columns and feint at Macon." This is marker number 018-7 and it was erected in 1957 by the Georgia Historical Commission.
