This review is for the banana derby. Very entertaining show. The highlight of our visit. If they weren't there, I wouldn't have gone. The other booths/attraction are pretty boring.

The Georgia State Fair is at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. This year the fair runs from April 28th through May 7th, 2023. Gate admission for adults is $15, seniors (60 and up) are $10, children 10 and under are free with a paying adult. On May 1st and 3rd on their website they also ran for free tickets for all day. Rides are open weekdays 12 PM to 10 PM and weekends 10 AM to 10:00 PM. You have all the exciting attractions and shows. Live music, fair food and carnival rides and kiddie rides. It's all about family fun. The best show I have experienced at Georgia State Fair is Aquatic Acrobatic Show. Great entertainment for all ages. Food stalls are plenty. I tried some fried chicken and fries. Spectacular Carnival Rides like giant wheel and midway are the best. I had an awesome time and would definitely recommend this place to anyone to come and experience it. Ample parking with $10 fee, need to pay cash. If you are in the area, please do visit with family and friends.

I wish we would have gotten there earlier. The wholesome fun attractions are happening/available during the day. We got there around 7:30pm - a lot of rowdy teenagers. This was also the last weekend of the fall tour. Things were fun enough; lots of rides, carnival foods like funnel cake, pizza, nachos, turkey legs, slushies... I even saw someone with chilli. Lines were very long and it was crazy crowded. I bet the best time is 11am on a weekday.

As far as fairs go, this was pretty weak. The food was ... Disappointing really. There was only one place that looked legit & it was a little Mexican shack but they didn't have elote ready when I came by. We ordered a $12 bucket of quite honestly the worst fries I've ever had. They were "curly" but no curls, slightly uncooked and squishy and tiny. The bucket was refillable at $5/each but no way. Toppings $1/piece (we had cheese and jalapenos). It was not crowded at all but probably one of the most redneck events I've been to from poorly acted wrestling to pig races & a few stands of pay money to see "x". They had animals, which I'm actually not sure how I feel about it. The animals looked healthy.. ish. Eh. Ok. Let's not lie to ourselves. They keep animals in tiny cages for tourists. Geez. Now that I think about it, it's a lot worse than it felt like... Ugh. Ok. Moving along. Typical carnies swindling you worse than a used car salesman, speaking fast, trying to push their games into your hands and then demanding obscene payment. I hate carnies and I hate carnival games. A few good rides. A pretty fast roller coaster & a few circle rides. Ferris wheel was wobbly. One ride made awful creaking and I kept imagining flying off .... $10 to get in, everything was stupid expensive. It was hot & I suppose mildly entertaining. There was a game outside with large inflatables that was interesting. Of course, they had advertisement booths which kinda weird since you pay to get in .. anyway. If you have small children and you know what you're getting into, it's kinda worth it. As an adult, it wasn't amusing enough I'd ever go back. Also, the prizes are all worthless junk so definitely don't play for that. But if you're interested in shooting a dart or throwing a ball for $5-10, go for it.

The Flying Dutchman...goes in a clockwise circle. You're up higher than you think.

A friend of mine had never been to a state fair (gasp!), and I haven't been to one since leaving home at 18, so we bundled up and headed to Hampton, GA (a short 40-minute ride from my home in East Atlanta.) Take my advice and buy the $20 ride-all-you-want wristband. Even if you only get on 3-4 rides, it's worth it. I made the mistake of buying tickets and then getting the wristband and I didn't get my money's worth of entertainment. Also, some of the rides require two people and my friend couldn't get on any of the rides because they all went in circular motions which make her sick. (Riding alone sucked big time, but I did it because I am awesome.) These rides are some of the same ones from my childhood....and I believe they are literally the same ones because they haven't been updated to accommodate the fattening of America. If you're much bigger than me, you won't be able to fit in a lot of them. I was squeezing in myself. And if you're doing a two-person ride, I hope your partner is skinny. But the thrill of the ride is still there. Being spun upside down, side-to-side, and far out and away still feels amazing and frightening at the same time. The only ride I would tell anyone to stay away from is Zero Gravity. That's the last ride I got on and the one that made me feel sick to my stomach. The thing I love most about the fair is that you can eat whatever ridiculous thing you want and not feel guilty about it at all. During my few hours I ate a hand-dipped corn dog, a slice of sausage pizza, half a bag of cotton candy, and a FRIED SNICKERS. Even to me as the person who ate it this sounds gross, but in reality it's tasty, mainly because the breading is similar to what they use for funnel cake. But I only ate the portion of the bar covered in fried cake, the rest I tossed out (had to save room for more junk!) My friend had the fried twinkie and she said it was pretty good - that you could barely taste the filling because of the fried cake. This was good to me because the filling is why I got the fried Snickers instead of the fried twinkie. From what I overheard, fried Oreos are pretty spectacular too. I got my first airbrush tattoo at the fair! When they apply the paint, it's a little cold on your skin but that's all. The tattoo is supposed to last for two weeks if I don't touch it, but since it was $6 for a small one, I didn't feel too bad when I accidentally scrubbed some of the paint off in the shower. But it was cute the few hours it lasted. There were a lot of vendors there selling airbrushed items, stuffed animals, hats and scarves, and other random items you could buy at Spencers in 1990. My favorites were the guy selling cowboy hats, and the guys selling leather bracelets. I bought a pair of leather bracelets and my friend bought four jewel and leather bracelets. There were games to win stuffed animals. I have no faith in those games at all and wish they would just let me buy the friggin' teddy bear. But I played skee ball for old times sake and won absolutely nothing, which I remember from my childhood. As for fashion, my friend and I were part of the small group who wasn't outfitted in something called "Realtree" which is hunting camouflage. And this wasn't just the fellas, people. The ladies had their Realtree pants and jackets too. As for hair and makeup - blond on top/black on bottom hair (skunk hair) and heavy black eyeliner were definitely the top picks. My friend and I looked so boring and non-local that every booth we stopped by asked us where we were from. Although I hate to pay for parking, it was a reasonable $5. My friend had a great time at the fair and was glad she was able to tick that off her "experiences" list, and I was able to re-visit my childhood for just a while and it was lovely. This is definitely a family or teenager kind of thing, but as a couple of grown ups over 35 we had a great time, too. Yelp 52 #44

What a crappy fair. My wife and I had not been to a fair in years and decided to take our almost 1 year old son on opening day. We were both thinking that a "State Fair" meant there would be more activities, games, rides, contest, vendors, etc than a county fair. We were largely disappointed. This was a mess of a fair all the way around with not much variety in activities. The parking situation was perfected by the people working the lot was about the best thing about this "fair".

Henry County hosts many free family-friendly events here and there is occasionally a paid event/experience from an external vendor/organization. Our most recent visit was for the county's Hot Summer Fest 2025 (on July 3rd). It included an are show, a drone show, and fireworks, plus games, bouncy houses and water slides before the shows began. We also really love the county's trick or treat event here. This past October (2024) they were doing paid rides on the track so my husband got to take a few high speed spins around the track with a professional driver. DACULA FALL FESTIVAL!…read more This festival is just a big mystery to me because I could find no information regarding its start or its age. It is as if today was the first day that they held this festival. For every single festival I have ever attended, their is some on-line documentation about the festival regarding the date and circumstances, number of attendees the previous year, vendors etc. This festival offered nothing! Let me just say this: If you aren't excited about your festival and don't "shout it out", how will people know to attend? Be proud and represent your festival to the fullest! When we arrived, we realized that this is a very small community festival. It is held in the center of town at Old Mill Park which is a really nice venue with outdoor seating and a performance stage. This seemed to be a festival designed more for the locals than visitors because of the limited vendors and lack of festival information. Although there were no food trucks, there was food offered from a local restaurant and from other vendors. Unfortunately much of what was offered was hotdogs, burgers and sandwiches. I would have appreciated more options. There was one table that interested me because it was obvious that the treats were homemade and there were samples. I sampled the apple pound cake and it was delicious! It was made from quality ingredients, the flavors were balanced, the apples were fresh and not canned and there was a beautiful baked topping that just made the cake sing. I have never purchased a cake because I prefer to bake them myself. However, I was happy to buy two servings to go but I had to get into mine right away! It never made it back to the car. Yes!! If you just want to get out of the house, chill and meet some people in a quiet setting, this is your festival.

BRASLETON ANTIQUES AND ARTISAN FESTIVAL!…read more The Antiques Festival is a semi-annual affair that is in its 13th year. It is a free festival that takes place in downtown Brasleton with approximately 150 vendors participating . Parking is free and convenient if you arrive early. The festival starts on Friday afternoon and continues through Sunday evening, (Oct 21st-23rd). You will find a variety of items here including vintage, repurposed, farmhouse, handmade, home décor, pottery, furniture, collectibles, art and so much more. If you are looking for something very specific or just wanting to browse for things you don't need, this is a great opportunity to do so. This festival is perfectly timed for those looking for holiday décor or fall accents. In addition to the vendors, there were food trucks and a play area for kids. We arrived 30 minutes before the event started and were able to purchase items during this time. I love being able to get first pick because the bracelet that I purchased was one of a kind. My husband also purchased a unique item. During this time, we were able to spend time talking with vendors, taking photos and learning more about the products. Attending these festivals is a great way to support small businesses and Yelping helps to shine the light on some businesses that would otherwise go unnoticed. I could not photograph all of the items of interest because some of the items cannot be photographed due to a fear of being "hi-jacked" which I certainly understand. One such vendor had unique sculpted items that were absolutely beautiful but since she only presents once or twice per year, her items are not often seen. She is very low-profile and her items should definitely be put on display for all to see. Although there were several food trucks, no one was serving breakfast which was a missed opportunity. Also if you wanted to get something to eat, there was no designated dining area for those who prefer to sit and dine. I also missed having a bit of music while I shopped. Never the less, I had a nice time and was just glad to get out and enjoy the weather, vendors and fellow shoppers on such a beautiful day!

The vendors aren't the same ones you see at Inman, Va-Hi, and Dogwood, which is a very welcome change for me! There's so much to look at here along with music and food, and I loved that the area was easily transformed to include plenty of seating for people to stop and have a bite. You don't see that at many of the other festivals. If you have kids, there's even an area set up by Binders (you know, quality art supplies) for kids to play in and get creative. There's a wide variety of things for kids to work with and participate in, so don't hesitate to let your little ones dabble in some paint. So while it's not as huge as the other festivals, it's got a real community vibe to it that I absolutely love. A real gem in a sea of festivals this city hosts... oh yeah, this one also picks October as it's home (usually over my birthday). If you've ever been drenched in sweat wandering the other festivals, come out and enjoy the cool, crisp air and smells of autumn while checking out all the art!

And this vendor is the only reason that I give this event 3 Stars. The next best thing was the live band playing. They sounded pretty good. But the heat today just would not allow me to enjoy it! There were maybe 20 vwndors. Most were cooking today and it was already 97 degrees out so it was hot as hell. I had to where my Orthopedic Boot because I damaged my Achilles Tendon. Although I didn't like my nephews meal, I saw the time and effort that she put into cooking the food. The Philly Cheesesteak looked good I would get that rather than the fish and fries. Fries and ketchup tasted cheap. The fish was Tilapia. There was a Jamaican place with some reasonably priced dinner plates and a place selling Gyros. They both looked and smell good. I noticed an Insurance Co and woman selling items made from wood.

Squirrels don't count -- you see those in the city. I'm talking about possums, armadillos and porcupines. Chances are you'll bump into some kind of festival in a nearby small town. And that's how I discovered the Sunflower Farm Festival in Rutledge, GA over the 4th of July weekend. Barely 45 minutes away from my condo in downtown Atlanta, but a world apart, it's billed as a "Good Old Fashioned Family Fun Time In The Country!" And despite my lack of family, I did have fun. I arrived early enough on Sunday morning to catch some of the Sunday Morning Jubilee, featuring fine bluegrass gospel tunes by the Rocky Creek Band. I didn't feel so guilty about skipping church as the sweet sounds of "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" wafted through nature's own cathedral of tall pines. With barely 6,000 people in attendance over three days it's more relaxed and less crowded than the massive festivals held in the city. There's a real charm to the artists and crafters market, unlike the slick juried shows at big city festivals. I delighted in choosing between buying corn cob jelly or banana nut bread jam. The bird feeder I purchased, made from a vintage cup and saucer, will make a unique gift. Like any good festival, there are food vendors, including the requisite junk food purveyors selling funnel cakes, and get this, fried Oreos, Twinkies and Snickers. I did my cholesterol a favor and took a pass. Activities for kids included pony rides, a petting zoo and a hay ride. And instead of sand, the kids play box was filled with corn kernels. Isn't that cute? The signature event allows you to wander through 15 acres of sunflowers and cut as many as you can stuff into a bucket for $15. That's a lot of smiles and sunshine to carry home. The thing about small town festivals is that you hear about other festivals too, like the Cotton Gin Festival and the Christmas In The Country Weekend and even the Loachapoka Syrup Sopping Festival in Loachapoka, AL. If the Sunflower Farm Festival is any indication, I see more small-town festivals in my future.

BEST "COTTON PICKIN" FESTIVAL THIS YEAR!…read more Well, I was off to explore yet another festival this weekend and it was a blast! The Cotton Gin Festival was started back in the late 80's as a fundraiser to save the historic Agnes Hotel. It proved to be very successful and now occurs annually. The drive to the town of Bostwick was great because it is very scenic and quaint. We love the things that we saw on the way: baby goats playing in a front yard like they were little kittens, horses, cows and awesome cotton fields . I love cotton and I am just fascinated with touching raw cotton and borrowing samples from certain museums. My husband thinks it's like stealing a Van Gogh but I only grabbed a little to put in my pocket. However, I am happy to say that today I was actually able to PURCHASE my very own sample. Our favorite experience at the festival was touring the historic cotton mill. We were able to tour the mill and see that awesome gin at work. We actually saw the cotton vacuumed into the machine and transported throughout where it was cleaned, de-seeded, compressed and packaged for transport. It was the coolest thing ever!! Every single bale has a sample removed and sent to a government agency where it is inspected and evaluated. This tour was not just about seeing a cotton gin, it was a great opportunity to educate the public about the cotton industry. This festival is a great event for the entire family. Along with tours of the cotton mill, there was also an early morning race and a parade. The festival featured various vendors selling, clothing, jackets, jewelry, handmade soaps, wood crafts, winter accessories and more. I found a great hooded wool poncho that was handmade and super warm. It was sold by a Native American vendor who had great outerwear, bracelets, necklaces, hand puppets and more. Unfortunately he did not have a business card or the name of his business posted. This is not uncommon but it causes these small businesses to miss out on getting recognized with a Yelp review. I really like being able to "shine the light" on these small businesses so that they get the attention they deserve. In addition to vendors, there was a parade of various antique tractors and a few classics. It was incredible because there were so many tractors that it was just dizzying! Some of them were very rustic while others were beautifully restored. It was just great to see so many classic vehicles still loved and appreciated. Love it! Every festival has to have good food and great music and this one did not disappoint especially when it came to the music. I do not know the name of the band but they were so professional and so good that I would absolutely pay to hear them play again anywhere. They kept everyone thoroughly entertained. As we actually sat down to watch them, we noticed that we were sitting under a pecan tree. So we had fresh pecans to snack on while we jammed to the music. Perfect! For lunch we actually had some deliciously smoked ribs which is one of our favorite festival foods and a slice of buttermilk pie. In addition to all of the activities and businesses to interest adults, there was also a petting zoo and a huge play area for the kids. This festival absolutely had something for everyone and is highly recommended for all. ***Now to the issues that need to be addressed: During the festival, one should never run out of water and soap. This is just unacceptable. One should also never, ever run out of tees so early in the day, especially when it comes to the larger sizes. Additionally, tees should be designed to fully embrace the tractors and the cotton gin theme as in prior years and be available in complimentary colors. It is really not that difficult. I look forward to attending next year and having a great time! Just have my t-shirt ready please. PS If you are a vendor who sells clothing, outerwear or accessories, please consider bringing a mirror along so that customers can conveniently see themselves in the items they are wanting to purchase (instead of trying to rely on their phone). Thank you!
