Great place to feel like you are back in time. Gerbers is an old pub in a building back from the 1800's. We sat at the bar and got a great history lesson about the bar from Mark the owner. Steve the bartender is great, very social and helpful with your drink selection We sat at the bar but ordered the fried bologna and long hots. The sandwich came out on a crispy toasted bread loaded with fried bologna and peppers...it was awesome! And the fries, nice and crispy!! What an awesome pub We decided to stay for dinner. One upon a time Gerber's was actually a derelict closed eatery...essentially a casualty from the decay of Utica. With the revitalization of downtown and the return of the Utica AHL hockey team, Gerber's has been brought back to life. Excellent burgers and the drink prices are classic Utica reasonable. It's got the warm vintage thing inside as well. A great place to visit if you are staying at the Doubletree or are on the way to watch hockey. The original Gerber was a Jewish fella who ran the speakeasy back in the early part of the 20th century. read more

Restored speakeasy in historic downtown Utica! Stopped here after a Utica Pioneers hockey game, and it was like stepping back in time. Nice selection of beer, wine and cocktails at reasonable prices. The friendly owner, Mark, has done a fantastic job to turn this buildium back into the welcoming bar it once was. Be sure to ask him about the history as he has done his homework and did much of the restoration himself. Authentic historic decor and charming vibe! It was a nice kind of small townie type of bar. It was some quiet and relaxing atmosphere. No drink menu's though which was a little unorthodox but the bartender said he could make anything they had on had that we wanted. My mom, my sister, my brother, his wife and daughter and my wife and I were looking for a good place for dinner last night and I suggested Gerber's. The last time that my wife and I had been there was pre-pandemic, so it had been awhile. The seven of use all had a great dinner and incredible service from Joe. Mark, the owner, was gracious and welcoming and his food was excellent. The reuben is excellent and the Rodeo burger, which a few of us at the table had, looked really, really good! It was a relaxing evening spent in this quaint, local landmark. Great atmosphere and excellent beer selection. We'll be back. read more

We stopped into Gerber's tonight on a whim...so happy we did. We started with a mojito and an old fashioned. The drinks were perfection! Since we like to have a variety, we had the Mediterranean platter, Caesar salad....and the pièce de ré·sis·tance was the fried bologna sandwich with long hot peppers. A flavor that brought me right back to my grandmothers kitchen. The bread was toasted to perfection and the bologna a perfect thickness. The bartenders/waitstaff are super friendly and welcoming and the establishment itself was clean and comfortable. I wish we had pictures to share. There will be a next time....stay tuned. read more

I was in Utica for a week and a classmate of mine suggested I try Gerber's. I am so happy I took her advice. When I entered, it was like I wasn't dressed appropriately enough for the tavern. I wasn't in a flapper get up. It was mesmerizing. I think this was in part because I love speakeasies and the 1920s. The menu is simple, but lovely. I ordered the hot pastrami on rye. I chose the noodle salad, after much debate. The server told me that he had just personally made the potato salad, but I opted to try the noodle since the other side was potato chips and I didn't want two potatoes on my plate. I also ordered a Saranac Ginger Beer, which is non-alcoholic. I not only fell in love with the place, but I also fell in love with the local pop. The sandwich came out and the pastrami was piled high. I tasted the noodle salad and immediately realized that there were olives in it, and olive juice. I'm not big on olives and actually hate the taste of them. I kept taking small bites, and eventually the noodle salad grew on me. The service was great. At the table, they had fantastic hot mustard, which perfectly paired with the pastrami of course. After dinner, I went to the bar where I had the local Utica Club, and then tried some other local beers. I wish I would have been in a better mood in trying one of their 1920s cocktails. The bartender, which turned out to be Mark, the owner, was delightful. He told me the story of how he came to open Gerber's following his first career. He had saved the building after years of being unoccupied. Everything is original. It is a gem. He even found artifacts and the old menu from the 1920s. He was very friendly and we really had great conversation. I highly recommend this place. It is like stepping into a little piece of heaven on Earth. read more

5 stars for the owner for saving this little nugget of history. I met a business contact here for a couple of beers and a sandwich and was very impressed. The Utica Club on tap was fresh & very cold. The pastrami I had was impressive. The half-sour pickles that were served with the sandwich were some of the best I've ever had (thats a lot of pickles by the way). I could've eaten a gallon of the coleslaw. The server at the bar that night (Rachel) was a true joy to talk with offering some great insight to a nice city that seems to be on it's way back. This was my first trip to Utica and I will go out of my way to return so I can sit at this bar and have a sandwich & a beer. My husband and I were taking a day trip today and we Google'd restaurants near us for lunch. Gerber's was on the list so we decided to give it a try. This turned out to be a great find. The atmosphere and the history of this old Speakeasy was great. It's not a large restaurant but the lunch menu and the bar had nice selections. The bartender/server was very friendly and outgoing. With a vodka/cranberry and a Guayabera Citra Pale Ale in hand, we shared a meatball app which was quite good. My husband had a beef au jus sandwich with mac salad. He said it was also VERY good and it had a ton of meat and NY cheddar cheese, served on a very fresh bun. I had a 1/2 lb Angus burger and potato salad. The burger was cooked perfectly, it was very juicy and again, the bun amazing. The burger could have been seasoned a bit more but generally it was a solid burger. Both salads were very good and obviously homemade/fresh (it just seemed a bit early in the season for me to be eating these salads). I would have loved to have seen more historical pics and info on display but they did have some. Otherwise they had what appeared to be a display of a local artists work, which was available for purchase. If we're in the area again, this is definitely a place we would return to. We're giving 4 stars out of 5 only because the burger could have been seasoned a bit more. If 4.5 were available, that would have been a better rating. Here's to hoping the area around this establishment grows along with what the individuals are doing at Gerber's 1933 Tavern. read more

Although I was happy this place was open on a Sunday I was not overly impressed with their "brunch menu" options. I was very happy to hear about the history of the tavern and the Gerber daisies on the tables were a neat touch, there was not a lot of choice for brunch and the portions were extremely small for a hefty price. I ordered an egg sandwich which ended up being prepared wrong and the replacement left a lot to be desired. There was one small egg that was on a much bigger looking sandwich and overall I just felt dissatisfied. I wanted to like this old speakeasy from back in the day but I don't think they should do the brunch options. Hopefully their lunch/dinner options are better prepared. It was a good try, but a disappointment for what I paid. read more

Great pastrami aaaaaaan dill pickle soupour man "waiter" told us the best history of the place!! Perfect for history geeks. We got a the Local drink; Utica club, to go with my hot pastrami sandwich. Good choice because it balanced the heavy sandwich with the light draft. We were there at about 5:30 pm a couple of local people were at the bar and one table of 5 older peeps and one couple. If you want to step back in time to the 1930's, then stop by Gerber's 1933 Tavern for a cold Utica Club and a sandwich. This building has been dormant since 1976 and has recently been restored to its former glory. It was originally "Gerber's Grill" which closed in 1976. But the original bar, light fixtures, and sign out front have all survived and are now part of the newly renovated building. They have a full bar, and a small menu based on an original menu found in a drawer from the previous "Gerber's Grill". I've been told the menu changes daily. I had a ham and swiss sandwich with a side of kettle chips, and Mac salad. Very good, everything was VERY fresh. For dessert I had easily the best slice of apple pie I've ever had, with a fresh cup of coffee from the Utica Roasting Co. that is located up the street. I have always wondered what it was like inside this building, but never knew since it was closed years before I was even born. Now I can finally eat a Gerber's Grill! I give the owners a lot of credit for putting love into this building, and at the same time helping the regrowth of a depressed area. read more

They have worked very hard to keep their bar in the 1933 era, old timey vinyl, no tvs, chatty bartenders who can make a drink and if you like this kinda stuff-- fried bologna sandwiches with long hots. Walked into a pub with no frills nothing much to look at. Sat at the bar that was unattended & waited while the server was chatting with friends? Waited some more, a few more people sat & finally server stopped his convo to tend bar!!! Gee thanks for noticing us! Server had to ask twice what we ordered to drink, got the menus. No burgers until after 5pm! Waited over 15 minutes for two roast beef sandys that were served with the bottom of the bag of chips, plus side of uncooked potato salad. Waited once again for the check & server once again had to ask what beer we drank to ring up the tab. Should of went with the gut to leave after the 15 minute wait for two beers!! read more

Great food and drink with service that is friendly and personable. The bartenders mix great drinks and the wine selection is solid. If you're a meat eater, go for the meatloaf - it's amazing! If you are in the mood for fish, the seared tuna is excellent. Even the sides are terrific - mashed cauliflower is so tasty, and the tuna is served on a version of succotash which is mouthwatering. On to dessert. Gerber's is known for it's bread pudding... And for great reason. Dense, creamy, and finished with fresh ground nutmeg. Close your eyes and be in heaven! The pound cake cheesecake was a great surprise, clearly house made and delicious. It's a friendly home town establishment who recognized us our second time there. It's small and cozy with lots of '30s charm. It's a great fit for Utica and Bagg's Square. We'll be going again and again. See you there! read more

Small historic place with good food and great atmosphere. Very uncrowded. Sat at the bar and had a really good roast beef sandwich. Let the bartender talk me into bread pudding for dessert and it didn't disappoint (although we did discuss them trying my Amaretto Butter sauce instead of the caramel sauce) :-). Went there last night at 9:00 with family and friends about 11 of us altogether. We were the only patrons there sitting at the tables having a good time. The owner had arrived at 10:15 and told us were closing please finish your drinks. So basically he kicked us out of the place at 10:10 pm, pretty awful experience considering the fact that we were the only customers in the place. Stopped here for lunch while traveling across the state- it was only 5 minutes from the highway and so worth the detour! Jeff told us all about the history of the place and it's time as a prohibition speakeasy. In addition to being a fine-looking place with lots of history, the food is great, too! We had dill pickle soup (!!!) which was actually delightful, and a really interesting Italian-style grilled cheese. The menu isn't huge, but the food is seriously delicious. We will definitely be back next time we're coming through town. read more

Gerber's is exactly what I wanted it to be. The warm atmosphere makes you want to stay for hours. The staff were helpful and friendly. I ordered a blue moon and it came out crisp and cold as it should. I'm always nervous ordering a $12 burger that comes plain on a bun, yet the extra money for the toppings became a distant memory the moment I bit into the soft, fresh, brioche roll. I've never had a burger this good. To finish off your meal, be sure to try their bread pudding. You'll leave smiling. read more

Visited here prior to dinner at a different restaurant in the area over the Thanksgiving holiday. We've dined here several times. We love the location as Gerber's is in close proximity to the Utica Memorial Auditorium. It's usually a great place to stop in for a quick bite and beer before a hockey game. The last couple of times has been a disappointment. The food is expensive as are the drinks. $12 for a Moscow Mule? $15 for a Reuben sandwich served with chips and weird un-flavorful mac salad? No thanks. My boyfriend and I finally had dinner here after stopping in for just drinks a few times in the past. They had two specials that night he got the steak dish with spinach and mashed potatoes and I had shrimp and scallops over raviolis in a white creamy sauce on top of a bed of cooked spinach (I wish I could remember what the saucewas called) I absolutely loved my dish, I couldn't believe the generous amount of shrimp and scallops that were on top of the nearly 8 large raviolis. With some help I was able to finish it. Of course I had to try a bite of the steak special, melt in your mouth tender with perfect amount of seasoning and a slight char-grilled taste which I loved! Beautiful bar well restored to its original glory, but this place doesn't just look great with a chill atmosphere the food and drinks are great too!
