Wine tasting in the German town of Hahndorf, Australia and needed some lunch. A simply gorgeous summer day, so you just have to eat outside. And the German Arms has tables set up out front on the wide sidewalk. You do need to step inside first to place your order and pay. Just let them know you are sitting outside. Staff brings everything out. Its a German restaurant, so of course you have to try the chicken schnitzel. It thin and tender, with the perfect crispy fried coating, served with chips. The pork belly and red cabbage was devine. The apple cider candied coating on the pork was sweet, gooey and savory all at once. And the red cabbage nicely flavored. It paired well with a local Pinot wine. In this area you must go local when ordering a drink. Regrets- no room for dessert. Staff was great. Limited street parking. This is actually a pretty awesome pub, but that does have an awful lot to do with the beers that happen to be on tap. You see, Hahndorf is basically a German village in the Adelaide Hills, so this pub, well, it sells German beer. Actually, the selection of German beers here is absolutely amazing. Having been to Germany within the last year I was having German food and bevvie withdrawals. That is until I happened upon this little gem in the hamlet of Hahndorf, conveniently located just 20-25km from Adelaide in the idyllic Adelaide Hills. Our rather large party (12+) was seated promptly and taken well care of by our servers. Throughout the meal water carafes were replaced without having to ask, beverage orders were filled promptly without large gaps, and the food... YUM! I ordered the (1kg) rack of ribs which was accompanied by crispy pinion rings and a slightly vinegary red cabbage. The ribs were not overly fatty and came with a tangy caramelized bourbon glaze and was tender despite being a tad too well done for my preference and liking. I was unable to finish this extremely generous portion despite putting a healthy dent into the portion serving. The $36 price might seem high but I had two other meals out of it. I would recommend this dish as a share for two moderately hungry people, no entree needed to fill the gap either. Overall the restaurant and pub offered a fairly accurate representation of regional cuisine that one may find in Germany without being predictable. We didn't try the desserts, but I imagine the offerings would be tasty as well. read more

We were so excited to try the food here, but are so disappointed in the service! We were sat in the back corner, and no one came up to take our drink order within the first 25 minutes. We asked a girl who was cleaning tables if we needed to go up to order, and was told someone would be right with us. 5 more minutes pass by and we got up and left. We mentioned it in passing to the waitresses up front and they didn't seem to care. Such a let down! read more

The German Arms has improved recently. I think they must have new kitchen staff, as the last time I came here the meals were quite average. But the last couple of times have been very impressive. Keep in mind when you dine here, when it is busy I have had to wait a little longer for meals. If you want a massive meal and to sample amazing German Cuisine be sure to check out their menu. There are sausages, ribs, steak, kassler chops, sauerkraut, etc... If you don't know what to order, you are definitely safe ordering one of their platter plates. That way you get to try a bit of everything. Last time I ordered the mixed platter plate. Yup, it was pretty awesome! Lots of meat and potatoes. Everything was cooked and seasoned well. It was a lot of food for one little girl. But I managed to get some help from my fellow diners. Only this is that I would have loved some choices of mustards for the table. That is a German staple right? Oh yes, of course! I almost forgot. There is a great selection of German Beer here as well! Ask for a Berliner Weisse, it's not on the menu but they will make you one. It's a beer with raspberry in it. It's quite refreshing and sweet! As for the restaurant itself, it is really large! This is a great place for large groups and functions. I've visited The German Arms Hotel a few times, and the food quality and service is always consistently good. Located in the 'German' heart of Main Street, Hahndorf there are so many traditional German options on the menu. My past two visits have involved the hot dog (which could easily feed two people), and for a hot dog it's always an enjoyable dish. Whilst the hot dog is enough for two, I tend to challenge myself to eat it all! There is a great atmosphere inside, with German music playing softly in the background. There are always lots of people, which is why it's a good idea to book - although our most recent visit we arrived at 12noon and were seated straight away. Overall, great service, great food and a really good atmosphere. This place definitely beats an average 'pub meal' and is somewhere that is my first pick for lunch when visiting Hahndorf. read more

The German Arms Hotel is the only place I have gone for a beer up at Hahndorf. But fit to German tradition they are massive. Yes you can buy steins- good luck attempting to drink the whole thing before it goes warm! I prefer to stick to a good pint, so I don't become extremely intoxicated in the middle of the day. As well as serving a great range of German beers they also have some Aussie favourites in case you want to stick to the beers you know. However, I would recommend branching out, as they say 'when in Rome...' You can also purchase beer to take away, which is helpful if you are driving back to Adelaide. The venue itself is massive. It has two area- the pub and the dining area. Therefore, there is never a lack of space to sit. But there is limited outdoor area if you do want to drink your beer outside. The food is a mixture of Australian and German. You can get anything from Bratwurst, to a Schnitzel, Gnocchi or fish. Hence, whether you want to be adventurous or not your taste buds will be satisfied. It is quite expensive, most mains being around $20, but all the food in Hahndorf is quite pricey. read more

I've been to the German Arms Hotel a few times now and have had good experiences each time. Usually very noisy and crowded, and you may have to wait a while to be served. There's lots of tables and it's good for big groups. A bit on the expensive size, but the portion sizes are huge. No one could finish their meals! Quality and presentation was great and the staff were friendly. Everyone was happy with their meals and we'll be returning the next time we're in Hahndorf. read more

Okay, so almost every time I've been here the meals have been really nice. I used to order the Giant Kransky and it was delicious, with the sauerkraut and everything. Then once, I ordered it and it arrived with none other than a bird feather on the bottom of the bun. A bird feather. It's bad enough that I hate birds and think they're gross, but to have a single (and most probably diseased) feather on my DINNER, was enough to ruin my appetite. Did I overreact? Hmm, no, no, I don't think I did. People send meals back for a strand of hair. Me? I got a freaking feather on mine. When it was brought to their attention, I obviously got a refund but they didn't really apologize enough. I'm not asking them to apologize profusely and bow down before me, but I've worked in hospitality for a long enough time to know that we would definitely offer something free like a coffee or dessert to compensate. I know these things happen, and it was probably just bad luck on my end, but I just really think a little extra effort was needed in terms of customer service. Sorry for the rant. read more

We were seated with no wait time, however we did wait 20 minutes to have our order taken. This was mainly due to the sudden lunchtime surge. I found the German Arms Hotel to be a thoroughly enjoyable dinner venue. The meal servings were generous and the staff were helpful and polite. As its name suggests, the Hotel serves many traditional German dishes. The dining room was spacious and comfortable. The food I ate was excellent. German Arms is one of those places that I've been to quite a few times, but have forgotten to review ... so I thought I'd do it now ;) We came here last weekend for lunch (my partner's mum is German, so she likes the range of food!). You always have to book a table, as it gets very packed here. Bear in mind this is more of a pub than a restaurant - if you have that in your head before coming here, you will love it .... you get what you pay for! I ordered the Bavarian Brewers Plate for $24.50, and it was a huge meal - a selection of crispy skin pork belly, grilled jagerbraten, fried paprika chicken, potato cake, red cabbage slaw & spicy apple compote. The pork belly was delicious, but overcooked (still tasted good though, and for the price it was ok). I ordered a German dark ale, which was also nice, though I thought they would have more of a dark ale selection (even though I was reminded that Germans don't really do dark ales!). The German Arms Hotel went above and beyond for us during our last visit. We had a large group and wanted to have a relaxed lunch where guests wouldn't have to pre-order or pre-pay. Not only did they accommodate this request but kindly offered and supplied a cake table and balloons (which were a very reasonable price). Actually managed to ruin our night.... went up for the Christmas night markets last night, and ordered food at the german arms because i thought that would be easiest and quickest with my two kids. Was told to order in the front bar. Only had table out side on the foot path. The food took 2 hours. Weirdly it wasn't even that hot when it finally arrived. No one informed me of the wait time when ordering food and due to the turn around time, was not able to get to the markets as they closed at ten. We got there at 6.30 and had our food arrive at 9... i have a two and a four year old. They had absolutely lost it. I was embarrassed and stressed and just over it. I know it was busier than normal but thats not really an excuse of that wait time, for not informing of a wait time, for the general staff. Harhndorf had a planned event on. This is a German themed pub in keeping with the area, the meals are then gigantic, luckily I ordered the Brewer's plate which is a share option and included chicken and pork. Hahndorf is a little town in the Adelaide hills, known for its German settler history. The town is now home to many bed-and-breakfasts and is bustling with day-trippers on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Everytime I come to Hahndorf I visit the German Arms. The whole German schtick is a little cheesy, but in a warm meaty beery kinda way. The decor has been taken well taken care of, it's always cosy inside and the service is friendly. You can get a litre of beer in a giant stein the size of your head! Who doesn't want a beer so heavy your wrist isn't strong enough to hold it?! They have a great range of German wheat beers too, which will give you opportunities to discuss your extensive German beer knowledge (because y'know, you went on that one ber tour in Munich four years ago). The food is enjoyable too. My friends and I often order the German Feast for Two - one of every wurst, mustard, pretzels, potato salad, sauerkraut and kaessler chop. If this sounds like too much meat - it is. It's gross. But in a fun "I shouldn't be doing this, how on earth will I digest it" kinda way. The wursts are quite delicious, although the last time I got this I thought the kaessler chop was a little overdone. Now that I've experienced it a few times, the novelty of eating every German meat on the menu has worn off. I might just get the pork belly next time. read more

I do a lot of travelling between Adelaide, Melbourne and pretty much every town in western Victoria, so if I find myself on the road at dinner time leaving Adelaide, I'll generally pop in here for dinner. It's not bad food. It's really generally alright. The real attraction for me is that I don't have to deal with that much traffic, and being out of Adelaide before peak hour generally means that I'm here for an early dinner. The menu is very German, but with some Aussie classics. I'm not a massive fan of German food. I suspect it's part of the reason why they seem to enjoy invading France and Belgium. But the chicken schnitzel burger is a decent meal. It's not terribly expensive, either. I think the beers have traditionally been the drawcard here, but there's plenty of places to grab a good German beer on tap in Adelaide now. read more

Been here many times, but never reviewed it. Came up for Father's Day and the second sitting that they have on these days. I like the second sitting as you are under no pressure to clear out as you might be from the first sitting. I have had the ribs before (1kg and a beautiful jus), and tried the sauerkrat and the sausages, but this time I decided to have the unusually named "Zebra Burger". As with everything I have tried on the menu, it did not disappoint. The accompanying chips were nice and crispy and the on tap German beers really helped it all go down. Good thing that Hahndorf helps you in settling your meal by having a long main street to stroll up and down afterwards. They have also recently had a renovation (well since we were last there) with the pokies either removed or moved to make way for additional seating. Well worth the trip. This is a beautiful place to enjoy a meal in the town of Hahndorf. It is very busy however so you have to patient. Having said that you get table service which is very nice and you are served promptly with a smile. The food is delicious and the helpings are generous . Chose a cold winter's day to have "another" meal here. Sat by the beautiful warm enclosed fire. My partner chose a meat meal which he thoroughly enjoyed. My vegetarian pick was a door stop. Just a bit above average - but I prefer a lower carb meal if I can have that choice. Didn't see anything else on the menu at the time. Great service - though it could have been because we were early birds (hence getting a heater "seat"). Overall - a nice experience - relaxing and love the warmth of the timber surrounds. read more
