Fortunately, we found some wonderful people and could do a for-sale-by-owner (FSBO) transaction, but we needed a capable seller's attorney's office to handle all the paperwork for us. The entire transaction was as smooth as it could possibly be. Paul's office was very competent. We gave Paul a limited power-of-attorney to handle the transaction for us. Aside for a last minute scurry to find a notary public here (hint: use Yelp) here, there really weren't any problems at all. Anytime I had any questions at all, I knew that I could call Paul or toss him an e-mail and he'd call me right back. After closing, Paul's office wired the balance of funds as soon as they settled the books (one business day!). Because of wire fraud, they were careful to make sure I was really me, and my bank account was really mine, which I appreciated. Over all, I couldn't have been happier. Well, I could have been. I would have liked to have shaked the hands of Paul and his team for doing such a great job. What could have been a stressful situation (remotely selling a house) was instead a dream. I was in a very risky situation at the time of the civil disobedience, and the office didn't warn me of the risks involved; as well I was told that if I didn't perform the community service by a specific date then I would definitely get a misdemeanor, but in reality there was some room for extenuating circumstances. During one of my communications with the office, they mentioned me speaking to "my lawyer," which was really offputting, as they were my lawyer. The implication that the family of any of the students involved would have a lawyer on retainer was really offputtting, as the activist group was specifically aimed at low-income students.

Some lawyers made a lot of promises in the initial discussion and acted like sharks that wanted to hire private investigators without really listening to me. - Organized & Clean office. I loved walking into a tidy, well-organized office. Some lawyers I interviewed had an absolute mess of papers. He had small reminders of his family and explained why it was important to him. JVK is a man of great character. - Underpromise & Overdeliver - this cliche is a big thing to me. JVK set realistic expectations and timeline for my divorce. Too many of my friends were overpromised by lawyers and invested way too much for less than what was promised. JVK set the goal for a divorce in under 12 months and got it done in about 8 months (December signed with him and served the spouse that month. I was divorced in August). It would have been sooner if the ex didn't delay providing documents. - Calm and Logical - this is super important. When my ex dialed up the emotion and ridiculousness, JVK calmed me down and was not affected by the ex's ridiculous comments or insults at the two of us.
