The clerk helped him pick out a few Australian native spice mixes and we got several little baggies of them ranging from 20g to 40g. Never have I wished more for smell-a-vision as I have writing this review. A Melbourne friend posted on an Instagram photo that while I was in town I couldn't leave without visiting this spice merchant. Perhaps it was my inner-Catholic guilt but I couldn't leave our day on Lygon Street and surrounds without stopping in. Thank goodness because this is any home cook and food lovers heaven. Walking in, it is a olfactory feast. Subtle scents of spice lure you from the door and once you enter it's a veritable feast for your imagination. "Oh I could cook this with that!?". All the bulk spice holds are organised into loose leaf teas, salts, herbs and more. Each spice, herb or tea comes with a short blurb on it's history and what could use it for. You can purchase small bags by the gram or in jars (stored above the bulk holds). I was honestly surprised by the value. Being a specialty store I had primed myself for prices far more than the average $7.95 for most of the spices within the jars. The challenge was limiting myself for what I would take back to Brisbane with me. There is a customer scale to check and trust me (there's a 20g minimum when buying most in the smaller paper packets, which if you're into packaging might be the thing to send you over the edge) you'll be surprised at how much you've scooped in to a bag and how fast that .70-$1.90 per gram adds up. And the decadent experience doesn't stop once you're at the counter. Forget "Spice World" the Spice Girl movie (well if you haven't already that is?) this is the TRUE world of spice. For lovers of herbs and spices this will be heaven. For me it was a revelation. I met spices i didn't know existed and now I can't stop thinking about them all. The quaint window display lured me into this fabulous smelling shop. The counters filled with spices, salts, sugars, herbs and powered chocolates kept me there, for perhaps a little too long. Although everything I found here was tempting I was particularly intrigued by: -Aussie meat pie spice -Christmas cake and pudding spice -Moroccan Soak spice -Macadamia Dukkah Milk Chocolate -Black truffle salt Ok, I literally have to stop myself from listing everything they stock now. Gewurzhaus is also home to quaint vintage style home wares, I want them all too. My wallet curled up in a corner rocking back and forth after I discovered this gourmet paradise. I'll be back there in December (with I suppose half of Melbourne) to stock up on spices that will turn me, and my Christmas cooking into a taste sensation...I hope! read more

I came in here briefly once and have since been agonizing over when my next possible visit will be. This adorable little spice shop has you sucked in the moment you walk past its front window. An apron by Jessica Steele hangs in the window with a bunch cute and retro baking utensils underneath. Their visual merchandiser has really got it going on for this shop. It's even better than expected once you step inside. The entire right wall is dedicated to spices, herbs and teas of all kinds from all over the world. Ones you've never heard of, ones you cant even pronounce. If you're after a spice that's nowhere to be found, I'm going to bet you it'll be here. When I grow up and get a beautiful country kitchen, I'm going to deck it out with everything from Gewurzhaus Herb & Spice Merchants! This shop is completely adorable, filled with amazing smelling spices, spectacular chocolate and the cutest kitchenware I've ever seen. Most of the kitchenware is unashamedly feminine, all in pastels so it naturally coordinates. While there are a few modern novelties (such as the nesting plastic heart-shaped measuring spoons), a lot of it is old-fashioned including vintage-inspired measuring cones and icing sets. The chocolate is truly unique, with flavours like white chocolate and saffron, vanilla dark chocolate and macadamia dukkah milk chocolate. For the serious chocolate lover, Gewurzhaus also carries its own range of cocoa, which can be blended with any of the spices or spice-infused sugars. Amazingly delicious! read more

This is a wonderful & unique shop in which you can find so many varieties of spices and herb blends that you could easily end up with a basketful of little jars to take home. Cooking and baking classes are available as well. While you're in the shop, you can pick up a booklet which details all the classes & when they are held throughout the year. Or you could check the website.The actual classes are held at the Hawksburn village shop in Malvern Rd. I really enjoyed the pretzel making class and of course eating our freshly baked pretzels afterwards. We made enough pretzels to have a few packaged up to take home with us too, delicious! read more

Love this place. It's a little on the exy side so I have to limit my visits which is hard as I work nearby, but it is the only place in Melbourne I've been able to find some spices I became addicted to on travels around the world. Everything is really fresh & you can buy whatever amount you need (there's a minimum amount but it's tiny). Really friendly & helpful service. read more

A little gem on Lygon St. Gewurzhaus stocks lots of hard-to-find spices, as well as different blends. Lots of inspiration for good food here! And they stock a range of speciality chillies as well, which can be hard to find otherwise. read more
