Shawn "The Con" Marioth worked with my wife at a larger company before he started his own…read moreconstruction business. He was a trusted acquaintance prior to even signing the contract with him in March. After collecting a $11,558 deposit from us to purchase the materials and cabinets, the lies began. At first it was delays from the cabinet manufacturer, then it was trouble getting laborers, issues with renting a dump trailer. After a few months we were contacted by some of the businesses that Shawn was allegedly getting estimates from. He had stiffed them on several bills and they refused to work with him. For at least a month every communication about our project was a complete fabrication. Because my wife knew Shawn and didn't want to add to his struggles, we agreed to purchase our own materials and allow him to do the labor to pay off the deposit. Another month of new timelines and false promises and we realized that was never going to happen either. Absolutely no work was done. We asked for a refund and retained a new contractor to start and finish our job. Shawn sent over a cancellation contract and agreed to a 90% refund because of the "time he invested in coordinating the cabinets". Again, he was almost a friend before this so we wanted to not add to his hardship. He had us get it notarized and everything. The contract stated a refund would be issued within 10 days. Time passed, no refund. His phone number no longer accepts calls. We got a voicemail legitimately saying "check's in the mail". How creative. His most recent lie was that he could pay us back in installments every 2 weeks for 6 weeks. Week 4 came and passed, no refund. Don't let yourself get taken advantage of by this con artist. We probably looked like easy targets to him and would trust his lies because of our previous relationship. Preying on friends and lying through his teeth. I've never met a more despicable man in my life.

My wife and I saved up for 4 years in order to remodel a kitchen and small bathroom. After getting…read morethree bids, we hired Marioth Custom Construction based on a friend's recommendation and their competitive schedule (Shawn estimated 6 weeks for completion). Hiring Marioth Custom Construction was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. Shawn has been paid in full but refuses to complete the project. At the time of writing, it has been 18 weeks and Shawn & Blake Marioth have effectively abandoned the project. My bathroom is unusable and the work in the kitchen is incomplete and shoddy. My two small children have been living in dust for four months with no end in sight. Delays and Excuses Almost immediately, delays began piling up. Shawn and his crew would randomly not show up to work and I would get a text or email with excuses every week. When the crew did show up, they would often leave after a few hours because they didn't have the necessary materials on site to do the work. We've begged Shawn to deliver the materials for months and he refused to do so. Every week it was different schedule and new promises. And then a new batch of excuses. Defects and Poor Work The work that was completed was shoddy and amateurish: * We have no shower in our bathroom. Shawn will not deliver or install the shower head, glass, or fixtures. * He installed the wrong cabinet and vanity in the bathroom -- both are the wrong size and wrong materials (he hoped we wouldn't notice) * All of Shawn's "custom" carpentry was sloppy -- the pantry he built broke immediately, nails were popped in the wood of exposed shelves, and his cabinet has gaps in the wood, isn't level, and is chipped. * Lights are flickering from his electrical work. * Grout is missing between tiles in the bathroom floor and entry way - I could go on for days We're in the process of trying to recoup the amount we overpaid Marioth Custom Construction so we can hire someone else to complete the project. I doubt we'll ever see that money. Working with Shawn and team was a complete nightmare and we were ripped off. Buyer beware.

Joe assured us that he would rectify everything , which he did without hesitation. We decided to go with the 18" x 36" tile which was a better color match and do an envelope design on the floor. It turned out better than we could have imagined. We are extremely happy with the craftsmanship and professionalism of all the workers and would definitely recommend Carifa Tile. Description of Work: We had the shower seat torn out and replaced with granite. The seat front, sides and shower basin were removed and replaced with tile. Two grab bars and three shelves were installed.

Carifa supplied the Schluter materials and installed them (Kerdi Board wall substrate behind the wall tile and Ditra Uncoupling membrane under floor tile). These are without an equal. There was a lack of communication during the home visit to prepare a quote. It was disappointing. We almost cancelled the entire project with Carifa based off that experience. The Owner, Joe, got involved when I called the Carifa office after no response from the salesperson. Joe listened to my experience, took over preparing an accurate proposal/quote. An important detail to note: each homeowner is responsible to select and purchase any tiles and certain Schluter products like edge or transition profiles. You can work with any supplier you want. The salesperson will steer you to The Tile Shop. They said they used to work at The Tile Shop. We had already purchased our wall and floor tiles from Floor and Decor. Carifa's salesperson started telling me we had purchased factory defective materials and subpar materials; something that is not true at all!! We had not picked up the tile from Floor and Décor yet so they did not "see" our materials but made these disparaging remarks. Why did we continue with Carifa? Because they used the Schluter products and had the installation craftsman. After getting past the preconstruction details Carifa sent Paco who prepared the areas where work was performed by covering all floors and furniture with protection. The same day Paco demolished and removed all the existing wall tile and materials down to the framing. Paco is a hard working, focused worker who kept our home clean during the demolition phase. No dumpster was provided during demolition and demolished materials were piled on our driveway until a dumpster was delivered a day or so later. After demolition Jack and Pedro arrived to complete the prep work and begin installation of the Schluter wall and floor products. I recognized quickly that Jack is a talented craftsman understanding that the products being installed under the finished tile are key to the final product. Jack kept us informed with everything he was doing including asking for our input regarding installation preferences. I cannot say enough good things about Jack. After he completed all the installation Carifa advertises they perform a "final walkthrough." It's also in the proposal. Jack completed all installation on Wednesday February 25th. On Tuesday of the following week, March 3rd, I had no communication from anyone at Carifa. There were a couple things that Carifa did not perform; sealing the grout that the proposal said would be performed 96 hours after the tile was grouted and reinstalling our toilet removed to install new floor tile. I reinstalled the toilet. I emailed Joe at Carifa of these items and asked for a (credit) for the items not performed. I never got a reply. On March 3rd I contacted Tom, Carifa's project manager, and asked for a status update and requested a date for the "final walkthrough." Tom came out the next day, Wednesday March 4th; one week after Jack had completed all installation work. Tom acknowledged that Joe had received my request/email for the deduct for work not performed and forwarded it to Tom. He spent a few minutes (literally a few) looking at both showers. Having performed hundreds of similar "close out final inspection walkthroughs" on projects I was ready to bring my Carifa experience to some closure. 3 weeks after the "final walkthrough" I received a final invoice that did deduct what I had requested. I promptly (the same day) paid the balance due. There has been no "thank you for your business" nor any communication from Carifa whatsoever. Here's my point: people who choose Carifa are going to pay a premium price for the privilege of having work performed. Carifa may use the finest materials available and have craftsman like Jack installing materials, but when everything before and after Jack is bush league and amateurish it sours the experience and make no mistake about it: you are paying for service too. The bottom line: would I choose Carifa again? Maybe. Having more 4 decades of high end construction experience I have not often been "the customer" but I know what a customer is. I moved forward with my eyes wide open hoping I would get the end result I sought after: two showers that will provide years of trouble free use. I believe I received that. Each person who has read this far will need to make their own decision. Lots of Yelp reviewers did not have this experience. My Ratings: pre and post construction experience gets a One (1). The installation work performed by Paco, Jack, and Pedro: I give Jack a 10, but Yelp limits the highest choice to 5 out of 5. Overall Carifa gets a generous three (3).

It seems the owner and top management care about their customer's complaints and are willing to address issues like these. Today I was able to directly talk with the President of the company in person and he took his time to let me know that the company is already looking to future proof their methods and even ask me for my recommendation of what would I as a customer feel comfortable with for a safer transaction. I have full confidence that this company will keep growing and providing for many more customers for the better. They have remedied my concerns and have been cordial and understanding with my unfortunate experience. I have received my first few orders and will get started working on our new floors. Thank you. Old Review for transparency: The reason Im giving them a bad review is that I was told to write down all my card's info because they can't run it until Monday and this day is a Saturday. It seemed very odd that they would ask that and told me they would call me first on Monday before they run it. I waited all day Monday with no callbacks. I called them back Tuesday and was notified that they have already ran my card a while back and will call me back to let me know about my order (I never got a call back). I check my statement and show it was ran the day I came in on Saturday. Today on, Wednesday I checked my statement again and a FRAUDULENT transaction was made to Walmart.com (probably thinking its a safe bet that many people shop there, Not I, online that is). I called my credit card company to inform them about the fraud and to send me a new card. I called back America's Floor Source to ask about my order and about the fraudulent issue. I was told that I would get a call back from my sales person (I have my doubt about getting a call back.

Jamie came out to look at the project and provide an estimate within a day after he responded to the inquiry. They began the work two days later. This was exceptional as I was not even getting a response from many other contractors or the few that did respond had a month plus lead time. Jamie and a crew of two others came out. I arranged my schedule to work from home. The day of the scheduled work I hadn't heard a confirmation on timeframe and reached out about noon. Jamie responded and said they were getting materials and would arrive shortly. I wished they would have given me a better timeframe and more direct communication at first but they came out and didn't cancel, which is more than other contractors I have tried to work with to complete the project. Once they were at the house they got right to work. They were pleasant to work with and had good manners. It ended up being a two day project. They were a lot more communicative on the second day of when they would be arriving. The work got completed but I wish there would have been more attention to detail. The work outside was good, it technically fixed the leak and they added some extra wood details but sanding the corners of the wood would have been nice. The mold was removed from inside, and I will say my wall was already at an angle, but the drywall repair is kind of raised up. I ended up taking off the trim work that was put along that wall and redid it myself. The caulking was above the trim and not smoothed out so I had to paint over it myself and now it is raised and makes my wall look bumpy. I wouldn't have minded touchup work as long as it was at least smooth. I am appreciative of their quick response to service (especially since I was dealing with mold and a water leak) but would say that detail to work quality should be taken into greater account. I feel like they rushed the work on the second day and I ended up having to finish a couple of things on my own and spending even more money.
