I was a patient off and on from 2008-18 (I moved out of state; still saw him through 2020, actually). I was referred to him by a colleague who stopped taking my insurance and of all the psychiatrists I've had Gib is the best. It feels weird reviewing a medical professional on Yelp, and going through other reviews I can definitely see where some of the criticisms are coming from. He's definitely never on time, so make sure you're not trying to squeeze in a quick appointment. No, like if you have a 2pm appointment and were hoping to be out of there by 2:30pm, give yourself until 3 or even later. On the flip side, part of why he was always late was that he certainly will help in a crisis if necessary. I do recall that for a period I wasn't seeing him and tried to get back in, part of his initial reluctance to accept me again as a patient was because of an insurance issue; I owed him money that the insurance company was supposed to pay, but didn't find out. So, poor communication could be a problem. I still feel bad about it and glad we made it work out. I remember in the early days in 2008 when he didn't have a secretary and had his tiny little office. He definitely worked hard and built up a good clientele. Linda is a great secretary and her sometimes sub (I forget her name) was also really awesome. There definitely are some sort of questionable things; if memory serves, he worked for Kaiser before independent practice and complained about their McCorporate approach to healthcare and profit-focus. Gib does value patients, but as an independent contractor, he does also need to worry about that aspect. He was amazing at providing samples when I went through an insurance gap though. I didn't like the supplements he sold, as they never really did anything. Nonetheless, he provided good feedback and helped find a medical cocktail that still works. There were a couple of instances of important decisions where he was the only dissenting voice (family, friends, therapist, other medical providers all agreed) and while he never said he was wrong, he did admit to being surprised at how great everything turned off. He could be very encouraging, but also at times he felt dismissive. He works hard and will answer questions. read more

Amazing psychiatrist! I've been seeing him for several years and he has always given me the best of care. He combines alternative medicine with prescription medicine and has always made it a priority to find the best balance of meds for me as needed. Office staff is amazing and so kind. read more

This is the most unprofessional doctor I have ever seen, someone who does not care about his clients and is only after money. Most likely near retirement and most have just lost his spark when it comes to his passion for his work. Saw him for two years and he was late to every session, eventually he just decided he didn't want to help me anymore and didn't even recommend me a new psychiatrist or explain how to get my medications now. Dr. Eggen is a wonderful doctor, he's very thorough and takes copious notes, provides excellent alternatives to medications but is also knowledgeable on psych meds. He's taken good care of me and my medical needs. read more

The Dr Eggen I have been seeing for the last 7 years is nothing like what other reviews say. I will admit the first time I saw him he seemed quick to ask for his copay but since he hired an assistant that part runs smoother. I recognize that this is his livelihood and he deserves to be paid. When I saw him the first year I could no longer work because of a terrible manic episode and hearing things. It took a few med trials to come up with the right cocktail but he did it. He has always been easy to get an appointment promptly if I begin an episode. He also returns phone calls within a few hours. He let me take time off work to adjust to a new sedating med. When I could no longer work he was great in documenting my case and I got approved on the first step. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Eggen for over four years. He is very helpful in answering any questions I have. In addition, he is very knowledgeable about medicines and alternative herbs and supplements to help me with my rare illness. My husband and I find him to be very genuine and he has a good personality. He is also a good listener. When leaving his sessions, I always feel more positive. Dr. Eggen is a good psychiatrist and I would recommend him to others. His office is conveniently located in Modesto and his secretary is always accommodating and has a smile to greet you as you enter the office. read more

This doctor is 100% about his money and not your wellbeing. You would think if you are a doctor to people with mental illness their stability would be of concern, well not with him, It is his pocket book. I no longer had a way to pay for my visits and can not get my primary care doctor to fill my meds, I contacted him in hopes to ask for him to refill my presciptions one more time since I've not been able to find a doctor to see me with medical. He refused. All I can say is if someone knows they need their meds to be stable and can not get them who's to blame when that person goes off the deep end and does things that could have been preventable. Well I'm not gonna take the blame since I've tried to get my meds and no one is willing to help. Dr. Eggen, DO suggested by my doctor who is actually very interested in my mental health and realized I should see a psychiatrist so I was referred to him. First, my first appointment he was 40 minutes late. Second he seemed really concerned on if we could afford the copay before my therapy even began (Seemed to me more about the money). Second session, I really open up about being suicidal and he seemed not to care at all... Just prescribed me meds that made me tired have rashes and never really looked into the real problems. I was dealing with stopping smoking weed because he blamed my suicidal thoughts on the weed not the meds. So I stopped for him. Then I got super depressed, no motivation, sad no meaning to life off these meds I was taking. I called him to schedule a urgent appointment and his receptionist scheduled it and then when it comes to the appointment date he calls in sick. And says he can talk to me on the phone but obviously I'd have to cover the copay for a phone conversation about how the meds have dampened my life dramatically. Then I decided to drop him sadly we weren't just meant maybe if he cared just a lil more. read more

Totally agree with the previous review. I saw "Dr." Eggen for five months. He's more concerned with co-pays and if you're even a tad bit emotional his eyes will wander around the room and he will not even look in your general direction. He prescribed me meds that would knock me out for 15 hours at a time. I asked him to allow me to take some time off or work since i work 12 hour shifts. Since there are only 24 hours in a day how was I supposed to work 12 and sleep 15? Math is not his strong point either. Anti-depressants are supposed to take up to 30 days to work. I had to twist his arm to get two weeks off of work while I was adjusting to the meds. When I asked him about disability paper work his response was, " you have to pay me to fill those out." He lacks empathy and I don't know how he has any patients (living or actually choosing him as a "Dr." ). The final straw was when I made three phone calls in crisis mode. I was having 3-4 panic attacks at work daily (during my 12 hour shifts) and all my phone calls went unanswered. The next time I heard from his office was to confirm my next appointment. Nothing was mentioned about my phone calls while I was having debilitating anxiety attacks at work that nearly cost me my job. I had no choice but to continue to see him since I was on a wait list for my current Dr. I mentioned to him that I can have a serious reaction to medication called Stevens Johnsons Syndrome ( look it up and see how horrific it is). He referred to it as " just a rash" and prescribed me a medication that listed SJS as the very FIRST side effect. SJS can lead to permanent dis figuration, blindness and even death. If Dr. Eggen is your only option I suggest you go without treatment. My depression hasn't killed me yet but Dr. Eggen most certainly could have. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Eggen's for over 20 years and find him to be very compassionate and extremely well versed on medications. I have used him for med checks, talk therapy, and his unique "sound table" therapy. He has called me at home to check my well being when I renewed a prescription after a one-year hiatus from treatment. At one point i had to switch to another medication and it took 6 months to stabilize. He was there every step of the way. I love his wry humor. If you find him aloof, it is probably the psychiatric training and his dry wit. If you find him focused on co-pays, it it probably because he has a mortgage and overhead, like most business people. I always look forward to seeing him and am amazed that he has received low reviews. Meet the man. Give him a chance. You will be rewarded with educated and intuitive insights. read more

Our daughter was struggling with crippling anxiety and he was very helpful offering her natural approaches when she was hesitant to take Western meds and when that was not helpful giving her meds that turned her life around. He was patient and for her life changing. read more
