A friend recommended I pop in to speak to a colourist at their new shop (now Natural Colour Works), as recently I have tried something a little different with me hair... I started the process of dying my hair grey. Im 60 this year and I was so tired of dying my roots dark brown every 8 days.. I wanted to go dark grey all over and let my silver grow into that. But as anyone knows who has tried this.. its not an easy process. You have to go thru many stages to get where you want to be.. And the recent toner I had put on was a little too lavender for my taste and I wanted to replace that toner with another darker grey toner. But I wanted to use some more natural products if possible that would be gentler to my hair. So yesterday I went into NCW for a consultation. I spoke to a young woman in her 30's who looked at my hair reluctantly and asked me what it was that I hoped to achieve.. and then she said, " Well, we do have a wonderful natural product that would remove the toner you have.. But I certainly WONT DO IT.. as I think what you have done to your hair was a very bad idea.. we would NEVER do that here!.. Let me ask if anyone else here would be willing to do it." She went off and asked a senior stylist.. he tilted his head in my direction, made a face.. then shook his head. She returned. " He REFUSES to do it as well. But there is a place around the corner I can send you to called Bleach London, they will bleach your hair as much as you want them to... but that will certainly ruin your hair even more than you already have. I would never do what you have done to my hair.. as I love my long hair." to which I replied, " Let me get this straight. You say you have a natural product that will remove this toner without damaging my hair, but you are refusing to offer me that.... but are instead sending me somewhere where they will surely damage my hair? Sorry but i'm confused. I do not want to bleach my hair again.. I just want a different toner on it." She then went to 2 other stylists who also turned around and looked at me, made face of disgust and shook their heads NO. Their clients also turned around and stared at me.. (this is a very small salon, where you could hear everything that was being said) This public shaming made me feel just terrible. I left. I can honestly say, this was the most unpleasant, unhelpful and embarrassing hair experiences of my life. I have never encountered such rudeness or snobbery in a hair salon! To say to someone.. yes we "could " use our wonderful natural products on you but we refuse to do so.." What is the point of that? Other than to try to make me feel really terrible. I left the salon and walked to my car and burst into tears. I desperately do NOT want to be a woman in my 60's with died brown hair. I think it looks ridiculous. But really, who needs an experience like that? Trying to grow old gracefully is tough enough already! The salon was cozy and willing to schedule me as a walk-in for an appointment that day. The stylist was attentive - listening me describe in detail what I wanted and gently pushing me towards what was realistic**. She was friendly and talkative (very important qualities in someone who is going to spend hours hovering over your head, touching your hair). The products that the salon uses were sweet-smelling and didn't feel harsh on my hair. * Bleach London would've made me do a 48-hour skin test before touching my hair. NCW also has a skin test policy (to make sure people aren't allergic to their toner), but they were able to accommodate me by dying my hair without toning it. Cheers to those who accommodate! ** I have naturally jet-black hair at the roots and honey-blonde everywhere else. I wanted to go full platinum, which just wasn't happening in the four hours of time I had.

My current favourite two is Tomoko and Chico, Chico usually understands how my hair grows more, and cut my hair a way that i just need to wash and blow dry without any fuss.She will take the time in perfecting the haircut, and there's been occasions i would go to her to fix a previous terrible haircuts from other places. This morning I walked pass tusk( I had my haircut here in 2008 and I loved it) I was seen and looked after by Peter he listened to my opinions and I showed the photos of my pixy hair style and said just do what you think it would suit me. And he did he cut it short but I can't explain how wonderful and cool my hair looks now . Within that hour I was back feeling my old /young happy self. And I can't thank him enough. The colourist then came for a consult, and I discussed my hair history with her (years of dying it black myself with only a recent salon-quality lightener to lift the colour to brown), and we decided on a semi-permanent colour. The service itself took about as much time as I would have expected, and the assistant gave me a relaxing shampoo. Both the colourist and assistant were chatty, although the overall vibe of the salon wasn't particularly welcoming so I felt a bit awkward throughout the experience. Perhaps it was because it wasn't bustling with business. Overall, the salon experience was pretty average and the price was par for central London; I had no immediate complaints after leaving, but I also had nothing particularly good to say about the salon. Nothing stood out as better than the rest. Unfortunately, the colour washed out after just one shampoo at home with products specially formulated for coloured hair. I didn't bother going back.

Unfortunately I ended up waiting around 30-45mins, which was beyond Jane's control. Luckily, Jane and Jack are both super friendly, and were keeping me updated the whole time. So onto the cut. I LOVE IT! Jane really listened to what I wanted, and took a great pride in her work. Even though she was now running over 45mins behind her schedule, she did not rush me or the cut at any time. Love Hair Brixton is a reasonably new salon, and in a sea of salons their friendliness, passion and skills is what will bring me back.

When I voiced my concerns it appeared they listened but when I returned again, no they hadn't listened at all as same mistakes were made again. You have to ask a few times for a cup of tea!
