It traces the town's timeline from its 1873 establishment and its growth into the 1890's as an East coast resort destination. The inscription reads: "On January 27, 1873, the "Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church" was incorporated by the Delaware legislature for the purpose of establishing "a permanent camp meeting ground and Christian sea-side resort." With the coming of the railroad in 1878, the growth of the community was accelerated. On March 19, 1891, an act was passed incorporating the municipality as Cape Henlopen City. The name was formally changed to Rehoboth in 1893. Since its founding the City of Rehoboth Beach has continued to be one of the most popular resorts on the Atlantic coast, attracting thousands of visitors each year."

Only 26 feet wide, there is very little space inside. The outside needs a wash. And yes, it is private property so please be respectful of that when you visit. We showed up at about 1115 and there were supposed to be volunteers there, but we honestly had no idea where to go. We tried opening one door to a random building, but it was locked and we don't even know if that was a building that we were supposed to go to. We stood outside with another couple who are also wondering the same thing who would let have liked to go inside, but we did not see any volunteers around. We stood outside, taking photos as we did not want to interrupt any businesses or homes nearby. Great history. It is definitely worth seeing a perfect 5 to 10 minute check it out what type of activity.

Located on the Delaware/Maryland state line, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse…read morein Delaware. It was built in 1858 and stands a proud 87 feet tall. The lighthouse is painted white but the paint has certainly faded since its last restoration and needs a major touchup. Still, it's a beautiful brick structure even if it is not currently used for navigation. There really aren't great angles for photos since the street has a power line that gets in the way. Right up close and looking directly up is the best you'll get. I stopped by on a Tuesday evening at 6pm. The structure was closed. Pretty history if you wanted to read…read more Battery 223, constructed in 1943 at Cape May Point, New Jersey, was a crucial part of Fort Miles during World War II, designed to protect Delaware Bay's shipping routes from German naval threats with its two 6-inch rapid-fire guns capable of a 15-mile range. The bunker, built with 6-foot-thick reinforced concrete walls and a blast-proof roof, originally sat 900 feet from the ocean but now lies on the beach due to erosion. Notably, the structure included 20 rooms, such as shell and powder rooms, a plotting room, and an airlock to safeguard against chemical attacks. Post-war, it was used by the Navy for radio communications and became part of Cape May Point State Park in 1962. An interesting fact is that Battery 223, now abandoned, is rumored to be haunted, adding a layer of local folklore to its historical significance

If you are visiting the Lewes, DE terminal building at the Cape May Lewes Ferry, take a walk…read morethrough the restaurant's back door to the waterfront for some great scenery and a memorial to the sailors who were lost in the nearby waters and washed ashore on the local beaches over the centuries. You'll see a 1983 marker in a small landscaped area that was the joint effort between  the Delaware River & Bay Authority, the Colonel David Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Lewes Historical Society. It's inscription reads: UNKNOWN SAILORS' CEMETERY Lewes has been a Port of Call and a Harbor of Refuge since the 17th century. For generations during the age of sail, a public burial ground in this immediate locality became the final resting place for hundreds of sailors who lost their lives and whose unidentified bodies were here cast ashore. In remembrance of those persons whose remains are sheltered on this shore, this memorial is placed. May they find eternal repose.
