"Whale oil and shipwrecks" In September, the lighthouse is only open on Friday-Sunday from 9-12, so we weren't able to get inside. But we did get a chance to check it out and take a few pictures. I read up on it's history, so here ya go. Fenwick Island, Delaware is pretty much on the border between Delaware and Maryland. It was also the site of many shipwrecks because of some rocky shoals about 6 miles out. So back in 1856, Congress approved a $25,000 expense to build a lighthouse on the island. It was built in 1859. It's 87-feet high and made of brick. The original light burned whale oil and was visible for 15 miles out to sea. The lighthouse keeper's residence is next to it.

There was a major snowstorm or Noreaster coming our way in Delaware so we had to cut our trip short. They were saying on the weather channel that a state of emergency would close the roads but I had never been in the area before so I told Tony, we are still making a few stops!!!! Buckle up Buttercup!!! So we started our day stopping at Fenwick Island Lighthouse at Fenwick Beach Delaware. The lighthouse is not all that tall and is solid white sitting surrounded by a trailer park called fittingly Lighthouse Trailer Park. The lighthouse keepers house and other building is kept lovely. It is closed and you can't go in it. Not near the water NOW because the area is do built up with the city streets and shops but if you can imagine her In Her Hey Days sitting majestically on the undisturbed sand amount dunes instead of trailers, I bet she was a head turner. No real parking but streets not busy at 7am so I parked right in front and checked her out. Snow flurries and all, she is still beautiful and standing since the late 1700s If in the area, stop by and see this lovely old lady!!! Free to enjoy

Very poorly labeled- we couldn't tell what buildings we were supposed to get into or not. It was hard to tell where to even park. The lighthouse was closed for construction so was all roped off. We did go during the hours it indicated it was open. Not worth the trip at all.

When I came here it was a Sunday and closed. The lighthouse is about the size of the one at Ocracoke Island. 1981 the property and lighthouse were given to to another group of owners. The history is on a sign but not able to go inside.

As you can see from my prior review in August 2023 I love this place. I love to kayak with my…read morefamily. I was here again with my same family of five including two elementary school children. This time I rented two double kayaks for 1 hour at $30 each or $60 total. I also rented one single kayak for one hour or $20. Our total cost was $80 for two doubles and one single kayak in total. This time we traveled south in the bay since the current was moving North. That made it easier for us to kayak back to the kayak base. We returned within one hour. I also purchased a Coastal Kayak hoodie for $40. We agreed we will return here again.

I showed up on the day of my arrival and rented a 10" board with no problems. FYI - the 10" board fit in my compact-size SUV with the headrests removed, front seat down and fin removed. The rental included a paddle and the board also had a leash. I had my own Coast Guard approved lifejacket. I also booked the Burton Island's wildlife guided tour which was a 2-hour tour thru the salt marsh around Burton's Island. Bob (our guide) gave a quick "kayaking 101" before we started and off we went. We had 8 total in our group which was a perfect size for the tour. On the tour we observed ospreys, lots of different types of sea gulls, cormorants who use the bay as a runway before taking off into the blue sky, horseshoe crabs, teeny-tiny fiddler crabs no bigger than a quarter, and little turtles popping up to see what was going on as we were paddling thru the marsh. Bob is a great tour guide with lots of info about the area and wildlife. The meeting point for the tour is the Burton Island's trail head located on the north end of the Indian River Marina inside the Delaware Seashore State Park. For me, it was a short15 minute drive from where I was staying in Fenwick Island. Price wise - the tour and SUP rental were quite reasonable. I will definitely rent from Coastal Kayak the next time I'm in Fenwick Island.

The tour guide was fantastic & really went through every possible detail on the family & the history. Came with my friends on the first day of our CM vacation on a weekend. Pretty easy enough to purchase tickets ahead of time at the gift store. All in all a perfect way to spend a few hours learning about the local history! Highly recommend!!!!

Even though Cape May is known mostly as a Jersey Shore resort community, there's a lot of eye candy in the form of Victorian architecture - including some historic estates. One of these is the Emlen Physick Estate, and since they offer tours of the house I thought it would be a great way to spend part of my afternoon. Located on Washington St slightly away from the main hustle and bustle of CM, the Emlen Physick Estate sits on a sizeable piece of land somewhat inward from the street. The property contains the main house, a carriage house which now holds the gift shop and a restaurant, and another building used for administration. The estate is run by Cape May MAC, who worked to restore the house back in the 70s. In addition to the standard estate tour, they also offer trolley tours and evening "haunted" tours on the property. The Estate was built for Dr. Emlen Physick, who came from a prominent family. I won't give away the details of the tour, but they did a really good job discussing the history of the property, Physick and his family, as well as all of the architecture and decor of the estate. Our tour guide did a great job with every aspect of the tour, including answering our questions. One thing I noticed was that the promo pictures here on Yelp show historical interpreters guiding the tour, but we didn't have that. Our guide was great, but a historical interpreter would have been a funner touch. The tour took about 45 minutes to an hour, and afterwards we were given free-reigns to explore the carriage house which had merch and a small self-guided tour area. Overall, I enjoyed my time at the Emlen Physick Estate; it's definitely worth taking the time to explore and a welcome contrast to the typical beach things to do in the area.
