Girl Guitar is awesome. If you are a women over 21 years of age, you will NOT find a more nurturing, friendship building, musical learning experience anywhere else in the USA except for Girl Guitar, right here in Austin, TX! I've been taking classes for 5 years and I've only missed one session. I've taken the following classes: acoustic guitar, bass guitar, songwriting, vocal harmonies, swing band, rock band, bluegrass band and blues band. The classes are held mostly in the evenings and have a maximum of 8 students so you really get personal attention from the instructors. There's plenty of red and white wine, too (which is why they have the "over 21" rule)! Each session, the class meets once a week for six weeks and then there is a showcase where everyone gets to perform onstage in front of friends and family. Singing and playing the guitar in front of 150 cheering people is quite the experience! I cannot recommend this music school enough! The great thing about Girl Guitar is that there is a fit for everyone. What I wanted was to give something a try. At Girl Guitar, the attitude is welcoming and comfortable without feeling like you're on a women's feelings retreat. Your inner bad ass come out, or your bluegrass singer, or your determined bass student or drummer....whatever it is that you'd like to be doing. The teachers are extremely talented, but also patient, kind and fun to be around. The classes are small and unintimidating. I can't stress that enough:UNINTIMIDATING. I am one of the older Girl Guitar students (mid-60s) but that has not been an issue at all in terms of the welcome I've felt and the fun I've had playing music with this great bunch of women. I only started playing music a few years ago, and the likelihood of getting to play in an actual band would have been pretty remote were it not for GG. Making music with others, performing, getting together to practice, nothing beats it for excitement. The supportive environment makes it feel safe, and the teachers are all such skilled musicians, themselves, that you can't help but improve. I am 2.5 years new to Austin and I found Girl Guitar right after I moved here from the Midwest. I decided that learning guitar was a very "Austin" thing to do and signed up for beginner guitar lessons. After many sessions of both guitar and voice lessons, I am so proud to know the women in this group.
