There was clearly a love for the different fish and varieties offered. We bought a lot of tins and ended up going back 2 days later after trying a few. This time, however, the 2 people at the counter completely lacked friendliness. They were only interested in getting through their line. One of the guys couldn't even wrap and tie our properly. Complete 180 from the first visit and not as pleasant. Either way, the fish was quite good and the prices are way more reasonable than Comur and other shops. My husband and I walked around Alfama on two days, and we took a tuk-tuk ride here on one day. We saw a maze of steep narrow cobblestone alleys, houses with terracotta roofs, some small restaurants, courtyards, some shops, a tram, and old buildings such as São Jorge Castle, Lisbon Cathedral, and the National Pantheon of Santa Engracia. We enjoyed eating authentic Portuguese foods. Unfortunately, we missed out on listening to Fado music. I was here during daylight, and unlike some of the other Yelp reviewers, I never got lost, I never felt unsafe, and nobody mistreated me. The buildings were obviously old but were not in bad condition or dirty. I read that the neighborhood has been invested in and spruced up in recent years.

Locals were out cooking on the sidewalks like they paid rent for the cobblestones, music was blasting from speakers that definitely failed an EU noise ordinance, and everyone was very merry. Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter, which is code for don't even try to use Google Maps. The streets are aggressively charming, like they dare you not to fall in love. This is a must walk around in if you're in Lisbon.

Jamie W and I have been to the smaller Time Out Markets in NYC (Union Square and DUMBO), but we could never find our footing in these places. This one has the distinction of being the original Time Out Market, so it's had over a dozen years since its opening in 2014 to develop its cred with dilettante foodies and insufferable vloggers. At the same time, the rigid conformity of the food vendors to the Time Out brand makes this place feel far removed from the family-run businesses where you can get a more authentic ambiance and for the most part, cheaper prices. Paying the equivalent of $8 for an overdecorated donut may produce momentary Instagram gratification but little else (Photo 8). That's not to say the layout here isn't well organized, but basically you're relegated to long communal tables where your movements are restricted. Being elbows-to-elbow with famished, arm-waving tourists is not ideal. We were even here during off-peak hours, so I'm presuming it becomes more chaotic and cacophonous during lunch and dinner rushes, especially with the reverberations created from the high ceilings (Photo 9). With dozens upon dozens of food choices, this place is ideal for large groups who have no interest in exploring their own dining options, the ones who are perfectly satisfied with hanging out in food courts in shopping malls. How is it I'm the first to write here about Belem?…read more Beautifully aged, a masterpiece of timeless buildings, architectural marvels and art at every corner. Belem lines the river and is the original location of Lisbon's port, the most western city of Europe as well as the oldest, the epicenter to Africa, Brazil, India and the rest of the known world. There are remains of castles - the Torre de Belem and Belem Palace, museums, parks, as well as the Ponte 25 De April Bridge, the world's 2nd longest suspension bridge. The Padrao dos Descobrimentos jets out with a lovely memorial to the history of sailors with men carved into the stone, standing on a sailboat, facing the river. These are just a few things to see. I would suggest taking a ferry or a boat out on the water and seeing Belem from that point of view as well as seeing the buildings directly. Lines can be long to get in. Another way is to take a tuk tuk tour.

Maria II, the Rossio train station, the Rossio metro station, the plaza includes two beautiful fountains and the massive statue of Coluna de D. Pedro IV. It has been the setting of a number of popular revolts, celebrations and today is a meet up spot, COVID test center and many different retail shopping and eateries. It's definitely tourist central. The centerpiece is the 23 meter tall (75 feet) column topped by King Peter IV of Portugal who was also Peter I of Brazil. The mosaic cobblestone is worth a look - it covers the entire central plaza.
