I feel so fortunate to have found Peter Spelman as our mediator. My ex and I are finishing our…read moremediation negotiations with him this month and we have both found him to be excellent. Mediation is a triangular relationship, with the mediator acting as guide and expert on legal details that the couple may or may not be aware of. Peter started by explaining the differences between litigation and mediation, their pros and cons. I had already researched this means of divorcing and I knew that it was the healthiest way to do it -- being able to design your own terms. I also knew that mediation saves a lot of money and that mediated divorce agreements go through the court system at top speed compared to litigated agreements. I found Peter to be expert, wise and very fair. There were definitely trigger issues (mainly money and custody!) that my ex and i had very different opinions about and could not have come to terms with ourselves. Having Peter counsel us both together and individually (he allows each party to contact him privately at any time to discuss the mediation or to clarify issues) we were able to come to mutually satisfying agreements about these and other issues. I was also very impressed with how he handled my ex's temper or bursts of resentment during the meetings -- almost as a therapist would. He is highly skilled in human relationships, again coming from a very wise place. In a divorce, nobody gets 100% of what they want. But being able to feel satisfied with what you do get, that's the key. And the reason my ex and I feel satisfied is because Peter Spelman was our guide down that very thorny path. We both came away understanding the big picture: we both started out feeling total resentment and fear that everything was going to be taken away from us -- children, finances etc. - and ended feeling that we are being fair to each other. Knowing that balance and fairness have been achieved is a good place to start the rest of our lives as co-parents together. I can't recommend Peter Spelman highly enough.
