The dentist was rude and condescending when discussing the condition of my teeth. She made comments and jokes implying that if I had come sooner, I wouldn't be in the situation I'm in now. I understand that putting off dental care can result in more extensive treatment, but there is absolutely no reason to shame or make jokes about a patient's situation. I specifically told her that I have dental anxiety and that this is one of the reasons I have avoided going to the dentist. Instead of showing compassion, I was made to feel judged for the very thing I was struggling to overcome. The hygienist's behavior was even more upsetting. She repeatedly emphasized how expensive my treatment was going to be and told me I needed laser treatment for my gums, constantly focusing on the cost. When I asked whether there were other options that were more affordable, rather than respectfully explaining my choices, she responded sarcastically and compared it to needing a heart transplant and asking a surgeon, "No thank you," because it was too expensive. That comment was incredibly insensitive. It upset me so much that I started crying. Even after seeing me become visibly emotional, the response was essentially, "Well, it is that." There is a HUGE difference between explaining that a treatment is medically recommended and making a patient feel ashamed, pressured, or stupid for being concerned about the cost. I never said I didn't want to take care of my teeth. I was asking questions because I wanted to understand my options and what I could realistically afford. Patients should be able to ask about less expensive alternatives without being spoken to sarcastically or made to feel guilty. I walked into this appointment already anxious and trying to take a step toward taking better care of my health. I walked out crying, embarrassed, and with even MORE anxiety about going back to the dentist. I can accept that I need dental work. What I cannot accept is being treated without compassion or respect while I am trying to get the care I need
