This is one of the best train stations in the entire SEPTA system. I specifically looked for an…read moreapartment next to this station, because it is such an awesome station to be located near. I think this station is an incredible asset to the neighborhood. It was a major selling point of the apartment my girlfriend and I chose, and living next to it is a huge improvement in my quality of life. Train service here is excellent. Minus a few quirks, the trains generally run often enough that if you're headed into Philly, you can just show up at this station without checking a schedule, and you'll be guaranteed to get something usually with at most a 15 minute wait. Pick up a Glenside Combined schedule if you're only concerned about the trains going between this station and center city. (Glenside is one stop beyond this one) Going farther out into the suburbs, you get lots of options: the Doylestown, Warminster, and West Trenton lines all go through this station, and it's the last station before these three lines fork off. But another huge asset of train travel is the direct trains you get going "out the other side" of center city. Once the Jenkintown lines get to center city, they turn into other lines and head out to various destinations, including (a) Airport (b) Paoli/Thorndale (The main line) (c) Media / Elywn Line (which goes through 49th street in West Philly, and Swarthmore) (d) Marcus Hook/Wilmington/Newark DE (SW suburbs into Delaware), and (e) Trenton Transit Center (NJ, this station, and not West Trenton, connects with NJ Transit to NYC) All this means that, with careful checking of the schedule, you can get direct trips from Jenkintown to all of these destinations. Pretty awesome if you ask me. Yet another perk of this station? Great ticket counter hours. The ticket counter here sells all sorts of passes and tokens, and has very reasonable hours (open near rush hour weekdays and most of the day saturday), among the best hours of any station in the system. Yet another perk? You can often get a cab here at night, getting off the train on the Jenkintown side. Not quite guaranteed, but I've seen cabs waiting here more often than other suburban locations, where you usually need to call a cab. It keeps getting better. The SEPTA station provides a convenient pedestrian underpass while the Greenwood ave. bridge is under construction. An extra perk! And it's adjacent to the beautiful Ralph Morgan Park in Wynwood, a little greenway along Tacony creek with paved paths along both sides of the creek...saves you walking along the road about a third of the way to Glenside, and just a pleasant place to take a stroll. The only sad thing about this station...it used to have both a restaurant and a coffee shop in it...and both closed. This makes me really sad. I hope that some day, both can re-open because I feel like having a restaurant and a coffee shop in an awesome SEPTA station like this is just such a great idea, and again, a huge asset to the neighborhood. The closest cafe/restaurant is Linda Jean's, which I like very much, and recommend checking out (it's on the Wyncote side, on Greenwood ave.) if you haven't. But seriously this station is awesome!

Although the trains generally leave on time, Septa uses the extra space here for equipment storage, so every once and a while the train will be delayed by twenty minutes or more. The regular crew at this location is consistently nice and know what they're doing. For the most part if you smile and try to be friendly, you'll make their day and your commute much nicer. The best part about this station is that it is just steps away from beautiful Chestnut Hill so it is a great regional rail destination.

I like the Chestnut Hill West Station for a number of reasons…read more.. 1. It is the first/last station on the line. You can arrive prior to your train's departure and wait INSIDE of the train instead of waiting out in the elements (although, yes, there is covered outdoor seating as well, if your train has not yet arrived). You also get your choice of seats. 2. It is extremely proximate to two primo coffee shops (Starbucks & Chestnut Hill Coffee Shop). A nice hot cup-o-joe is good company on the quiet ride car. 3. Conductors are generally pretty nice. There is still the oddball who asks you for your pass three times before you get to center city, but for the most part they are pleasant and reasonable. 4. You rarely see an old POS train run on this line anymore. The trains are in decent condition and kept fairly clean. 5. It's a cool old fashioned train station! I took a star away because, face it, it's still SEPTA. They can be quite heartless on the days that you're running late, soaked to the bone, screaming, crying, etc. SEPTA runs on SEPTA's schedule only. This means that whether they are 35 minutes late or 2 minutes early- they are still on time, per SEPTA. Better make it because those doors never reopen for anyone!

There's not much to write about this place, but here we go…read more Penllyn Station is a small facility with a parking lot of the same cute size and really no facilities sans for the station's office (I think) and covered platform. It even looked a bit abandoned. If there was an office there, it was not open. But, what it lacked in amenities was made up for by its convenient location as our family's house is literally a stroll away. Great for us but it must be so noisy living there. We departed from Philadelphia's Suburban Station which took less than an hour at a mere $6.75/person. On the way, I got to see parts of Philly I've never seen before, ditto for my spouse who's originally from the area. After arriving we needed to get to the opposite side of the tracks in which we used an underpass walkway that was close by, which thankfully was clean an uninhabited. OVERALL: I love no-crowds!

The big plus about Penllyn station is that it is free parking, while other stations charge $1…read more However, free parking comes at a price - the parking lot is in disrepair and so is the building itself. The parking situation is chaos, there are double parked cars pretty frequently and everyone is parking in every spot possible. There are quite a few "unmarked" parking spaces that people like to create. It's a bit confusing to drive to the other side of the station, but there is an underground stair well to get ot the other side. As for the little building itself, the heat is not always working, sometimes they forget to unlock the door, and sometimes homeless people like to spend the night. There is no ticket office at this station, but there's one of the new electronic kiosks (that I haven't used yet). Another downside is that not all Express trains during the rush hours stop at Penllyn. This station and Gwynedd Valley are the last two stations in Zone 3. Beyond this point, you're paying Zone 4 fare prices.
