I also like the architecture of the building, with its clean lines and white steeple. Before I came to St. James the Less, I had never set foot in an Episcopal church. The style of worship was a little more formal than I was accustomed to. However, I like the fact that they welcome everyone to participate in Communion. Another thing I appreciate is the quality of the music program. I would not have expected to find anything like this in a small church. In addition to the beautiful choral mass at the regular 10 am service, they have held special concerts featuring everything from classical performances to music of Broadway plays and Disney movies, which was very popular with the kids. In addition to music, the church is very active in the community. A few years ago, they started a community garden. The majority of the produce grown there is donated to the Northfield Township Food Pantry. They also have an ongoing ministry to the residents of The Grove, a nearby nursing home. Once a month, a group from St. James the Less prepares meals for A Just Harvest in Evanston. These programs have been well supported by members of the Parish.

Although this isn't my normal parish, I really like this beautiful place. The workers are all very nice and the speaker that we have here today is great. His name is John Donahue-Grossman and he is known for his portrayal of a homeless man. He is very good at what he does and he teaches students to not solely judge people based on appearance. Ironically, I didn't know he was the speaker today and before the retreat, I had my students read from his book "Ray". This doesn't necessarily have to do with the church because our school invited him to speak and to run the retreat, but regardless, we have all had a very positive experience.

There are plenty of places to get connected: children's ministry, discipleship groups, prayer meetings, and events for fellowship. I would like to start off by saying that I was never really introduced to going to church as a kid…read morebecause my dad is catholic but my mom is atheist. I was invited to go to Redeemer by a friend of mine a few months ago and my whole idea of going to church has changed since then. I remember the first day I went, I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. The church was small and the pastor was wearing a flannel and jeans. However, as the service continued I started to really like it. People who didn't even know me welcomed me to the church and introduced themselves. They even sent me a welcoming package to my house with some information about the church and some brownies! (They were amazing by the way) I made friends with all of the people around my age the same day I arrived. Everyone there is so friendly and I feel as if I can talk to anyone there even if I don't know them. The church also has many programs to sign up for such as car washes, youth group trips, and so much more. It's a very interactive place to be. You're not just sitting in a chair the whole time listening to a long speech. The pastor makes everything fun to listen to. When it was time to go, I figured we would just leave right away and I would go home. However, I was surprised when I found myself staying after for a snack provided by the church and talked to a few people while we were there. We didn't end up leaving for another hour or so after! I had so much fun. I continue to go to this church and recommend it to everyone! People of all ages, races, genders, and religious backgrounds are welcome here. I can almost guarantee you'll love it!

We do know people from both sites and love the community we have formed. My wife and I moved to the area a little over a year ago and tried a few churches in the area and liked a hand full but really liked Redeemer Chicago. Its mission is 20 and 30 somethings which is one thing that got us in the door, considering we are in that age group! I am glad that is their mission because I do believe that age group is overlooked by the church at times. That said, it is not the only age group of people at the church and all are welcome! I do value that we have a wide variety of ages and walks of life at Redeemer. I love this church and love the people in it! I have formed a great community with people at this church and am in small groups as well. I gave it 4, really 4.5 but can't do half stars :), because I am a realist and no place is absolutely perfect this side of heaven... but I really love this church and have found a great community to walk with in my spiritual journey. Each mass we attended we were able to have a different priest do the homily. Each homily heard was meaningful and relevant. The church has a nice mix of people; German, Irish, Italian, Hispanic, Asian. I like that. God created us all different and this church represents that spirit. Door greeters up front always friendly. Down to earth neighborhood vibe. It is clean, has a nice amount of masses available to go to and a mass in Spanish. My husband, myself and our kids are really happy with our new parish home. We are going to be formally joining.
