I had only rarely even driven through Inman Park, despite having lived in the Atlanta area for…read morequite a while. After learning a bit about its history as Atlanta's first planned subdivision, and being interested in some of the architecture, I wanted to take a walking tour of the area. Of course, times being as they are, no professional guided walks are currently offered. However, you can still check out a map of the area, plan a loop route, and take a ~ 2-mile stroll around. We parked across Edgewood Avenue from The Trolley Barn. This originally functioned as its name implies, but is now an event facility. There was plenty of street parking. We started by walking over and down the old stone stairs into Springvale Park. This is fairly central to the neighborhood, and sports a new playground and an old pond. It is bordered by a wide variety of homes and apartments. We next circled back to Euclid Avenue and followed that in the direction of Little Five Points. There were a number of nice older homes along this stretch, many from the Victorian period. Some have been completely renovated, but others are in need of it. A lot of the homes have fairly overgrown plants in the yards, probably due to the age of the landscaping. Once we reached the spur of Freedom Park, we cut left down the hill along the bike / walking path. This also featured a couple of homeless tents/carts, which were a big contrast to some of the homes. We then turned left again down Austin Avenue, which becomes Lake Avenue. The homes tend to get a bit more modest along here; some are quite nice, but all were smaller than some of the more mansion-style places on Euclid or Edgewood. We passed through a small business district / intersection and proceeded past more homes. Many in this section were more renovated, but the sidewalks in this part were mostly in very bad shape. Signs noted that, in spots, the homeowner + some community business were in the process of fixing the sidewalk. These were made of bricks or paving stones and had been completely jumbled by 100+ years of tree roots. Watch your step! We cut back on Ashland Avenue to Ashland Drive to Druid Circle. This part of the walk was more hilly and also somewhat less shady. The houses started getting grander again as well. We rejoined Euclid, took a slight turn onto Edgewood again, and worked our way back to where we had parked. If you like architecture or history, this can be a pleasant walk. You could expand it a bit on either end to take in Little Five Points or Krog Street Market, if you liked. I'm glad that I made time to explore here.

I'm generally not in the mood to deal with the hordes at Piedmont Park, and John Howell Memorial Park is the perfect, low key solution. Here's a partial listing of all the ways I've taken advantage of it:: - Picnics. The grass is well kept and never gets too buggy. It's perfect for setting out a nice spread and not having too many uninvited beasts. There's a canopy of beautiful tall trees to provide shade and backrests. Waste receptacles are nearby. A couple of times, I've even seen people show up with their own picnic tables, chairs, and grills. - Absentminded meandering. There are brick pathways and other soft walkways that let you wander without worry, there's nothing to trip over and there's no places for nutjobs to hide. - Fierce frisbee. The field here is remarkably free of divots, bumps, and protruding abnormalities. I declare it an ankle-safe zone. I often run into other disc throwing enthusiasts and there's plenty of room for everyone [unless you're in one of those Ultimate Frisbee leagues]. - Grassy Bocce. Again, because of the relatively smooth surface and the wide playing area, it's perfect for a good game of bocce. There are sporadic tiny hills and mulch-covered spots you can incorporate into your game to make it more interesting. - Bubble Making. If you ever want to make massive bubbles all by yourself and then grow startled at the spontaneous presence of Children of the Corn, this is the place. I swear, the kids come out of nowhere and start trying to pop my bubbles. I'm like the Pied Piper up in this piece. - Making Myself Sick on The Insane Spinner Thing. The playground here is awesome. It's nothing like the playgrounds I grew up with. For one thing, the ground is covered in that rubber mulch stuff, making it incredibly delicious on your joints when you plummet from the monkey bars. It's also nice for jogging. There's the usual fare: swings, slides, jungle gym, but then they have a couple of sculptural, cool things that make you throw up. I don't know their names, but they involve spinning. - Volleyball in a Bikini, Almost Year-Round. They have a little beach volleyball court set up, complete with sand, sand bags, tall referee chairs, and almost naked people. It's pretty rad. I've even spotted a dude with a metal detector and arm floaties [not kidding] when the games are over. - Hanging Out With Well Behaved Dogs. People bring their unleashed dogs to play and I've never encountered a disobedient or annoying dog. I'm pretty sure the dogs that come here are way better than other dogs. Dog owners are courteous and always pick up after their dogs. There's several stations set up for dog owners, with complimentary waste bags. - Stuff I Can't Mention. + + + The only thing John Howell isn't really very good for? Boomerangs. But after 52 tries to dislodge our boomerang from the tree branch, we realized the soccer/softball field across the street is better equipped [and free of all foliage] to handle that. It's freely available on the weekends. John Howell isn't huge, by any means [something like 2 acres], but it's well planned out, well maintained, and relatively low-traffic. That's more than I can say for the entire city of Atlanta. I just want to kiss it.

We enjoyed roller skating on the walking trail and sunbathing on the green area. There's also a play area with swings, a small field for games (or picnics), a green area where most gather for yoga, tables for dining and even a concert area. Well done Avondale Estates. Fantastic park hidden behind the popular Kirkwood shops and restaurants!…read more This park is perfect for all! Children are nuts about the HUGE playground! It is great for all ages! All sorts of playground equipment. Pretty much anything you can think of, they have provided! See-saws, tire swing, monkey bars, slides, rock climbing walls, swings, bridges, and many more things that I don't know the names of. There's benches and stone walls to perch on! Plenty of off street parking and walkable from Kirkwood Village. There's also a huge open field! Baseball field! "Urban Tree House". I recommend taking the kiddos to lunch or breakfast over at Le Petit Marche and then hitting the park around the corner afterwards. Or if you are a doggy parent, grabbing a cup of Joe at Taproom and meander around the open field :)

So, Atlanta has a ton of parks. Most of then are pretty nice and the city I think does a good job…read moretaking care of them. Geographically, DHSP is very tightly sandwiched. What that means is, there really isn't a good way to line up your car to get in there, except through the informal parking along the Martin/Boynton corner. There is no real view of the park from a main road, and so it's forgivable if you don't notice it. Honestly, I drive through Peoplestown all the time and didn't even have a clue. The hidden-ness of the park is a nice thing though, once you get over the geography. The BeltLine passes by on a high overlook, so there is walking access to the Beacon and Boulevard crossing areas if you like. There are some features that are likely to be used more by adult groups, e.g. a baseball diamond and nice large fields for ultimate frisbee or whatever. I was there for a large-ish children's gathering. The site for this event was chosen because of the park's considerable water features (splash pad, etc), and playgrounds. The play areas are well developed, with nice safety features if needed (nice rubber coverings to protect from falls, etc). There are ample picnic tables and large metal shade installations if the sun happens to be shining in a not-so-favorable direction. Anyway, the park is nice if you're willing to put up with getting there. Once you've arrived, it's about as swell as a park could be.

Deepdene forms the eastern end of the string of city park known as the Olmsted Linear Parks. It is…read morethe largest and the only one designed as a walking trail woodland. The other five are grassy 'pastoral' parks, and are fine parks in their own right. Along with Lake Claire Park, Deepdene is my 'home' park - I live very near. While Lake Claire hosts my go-to tennis court, Deepdene is where I go to pretend I'm not in the city but rather out hiking in the Georgia forests. It's pretty good at aiding in that deception with lots of very tall trees, interconnecting (if short) dirt paths and a creek running through the axis. Deepdene used to be a bit of an urban twilight zone - before it was developed, except for the traffic noise (which is considerable from Ponce), walking its undeveloped and sketchy trails really was like being in the woodlands. While I did enjoy that experience, I must say that the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance did a good job making Deepdene a little more neighborhood friendly. The paths are thankfully not paved but are easily walk-able without risking ankle turns. The several sturdy bridges are not only pleasing to the eye but carry you over the more hazardous parts of the terrain. And there are a lot of botanical and historical information signs scattered about. I like the development. On the eastern end you'll find a large, flat grassy area (the Meade) suitable for tossing a football or what have you. Kite flying? Does anyone do that anymore? You'll find many benches along the paths where you can stop and just enjoy the setting. No parking except along the streets, but, frankly, this is meant to be a neighborhood park for the local residents. Not that y'all aren't welcome. :)
