No way am I going to stand at self-check long enough to wait for the scanner to reset between items while I ring up 24 identical barcodes. The woman follows me into the queue, staring into my cart. "You could use the self-checks with fewer customers waiting." "You could open a register and use the quantity button and I'd be out of your way," I told her. Of course, she went back to staring at others who have the audacity to think someone paid by the store should scan and bag their items. I get my receipt and head to the door. 2 gatekeeers BOTH SITTING DOWN, neither is particularly close to the door. Neither has a cast, walker, cane... they are just sitting. So as I flip my receipt showing I checked out with a human and paid, to the one closer to the door, she says something about needing to see but I was already out the door because my hands/arms were full and it was clear neither of them felt the need to get off their seats. I would love to say this is a fluke. The truth is, this location has never been a good experience, since they first built it. The remodeling seems to be with the goal "we can make it even worse" and there are zero employees who care about the company. I usually go to Meijer, but, I got my annual dose of the Ludington WalMart and expect that will be enough for a long time.

AND I got to do it all with a happy heart as I sang along with my favorite praise and worship songs! I could stay here all day. Yes, this is a Christian organization which partners with local youth programs to help them raise funds for youth programs in need! The night manager who has a limp and assistant manager who is short and has curly hair with cauliflower ear are beyond creepy. Instead of running the store, they stalk and stare at customers--especially women--making the whole shopping experience extremely uncomfortable. The moment you walk in, they start following you around the store, watching your every move like some kind of predator. I don't know if they think they're being subtle, but it's painfully obvious. It's unsettling and makes you want to leave as fast as possible. No customer should feel watched, judged, or stalked while trying to shop. On top of that, they treat their employees like absolute garbage right in front of customers. I've seen them yell at workers, degrade them, and act like they're above everyone. If this is how they behave when people are watching, I can only imagine how bad it is behind the scenes. Between the creepy, unprofessional behavior and the toxic management, I cannot recommend this store to anyone--especially at night. If you don't want to feel watched, stalked, or uncomfortable, do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else.

I knew that we had a pay a visit while in town. What a great experience! Schroeder's has been open since 1891. While I loved learning about their history...it's a great place to shop. Schroeder's has a coffee house, men's and women's clothing, a yarn shop, bookstore, a toy store, souvenirs and all sorts of other merchandise. I bought a few books and a pair of moccasin slippers. My friends bought t-shirts and a puzzle. The people working the store were helpful, friendly and truly passionate about Schroeder's history. This is a store that has managed to stay true to its heritage, but stay relevant. If you're in the Manitowoc/Two Rivers area, Schroeder's Department Store is a must stop kind of place.
