We went out and around in Caernarfon and had pretty good food. The service staff was pretty bad in general and acted like they were doing us a favor and pretty much went out of their way to ignore normal requests. It was almost like they from the hospitality program at the local high school. For instance we ordered a more expensive bottle of AOC wine. Bottle was opened before it arrived at the table and the wine was pretty bad.

They also handled intolerances well for the pre-packed lunch time meals. There was, however, often only one veggie option at dinner time. It would be great if there was a little more variety for the non-carnivorous. In short, staff were friendly and considerate and meals were varied. (And tasty!) I really liked the fact that the fruit cocktail at dinner was not a standard can-affair but instead consisted of fresh watermelon, raspberries and other delicious fruits. Yum!

We arrived on foot from Tanygrisiau, but you could also pop down the hill from the steam train. Most people there on Sunday were motorists or motorcyclists. Apparently they'd had a busy day, 85 meals served at lunchtime. There's a garden outside, with lovely views of the valley. Inside there were lots of comfy chairs. There's a children's play area on the other side of the building as well. Even a short path if your dogs need to stretch their legs. I think it also offers accomodation. Can't comment on the food, as I was on a serious hike, so had to keep going. But our pints were tasty and smooth.

Luckily I heard of this place. Situated near Llandberis and down a long windy 5 mph road is this gorgeous farm house. Strangely enough their website is poor..yes we know it's a place to stay..but did you know that anyone can pay £8 to use the sauna and pool? Or even better £19.95 to use the pool, sauna AND enjoy a two course meal after? So we arrived around 11am while the kids were off school and was greeted by the lovely receptionist who id spoken to via the phone previously. After checking in, we were provided towels and directions how to reach the pool. The changing rooms were TINY..one small cubicle, a sink and a fold down baby chance unit..stalk like I had to balance on one leg to undress while trying to remove my knickers..without dropping my clothes on the sodden floor!! Annoyance cast aside we went to the sauna while the pool quietened down . Both sauna and pool were not the largest but did the job. After RE dressing we walked into the restaurant where we were informed it was busy. Graciously a waiter led us to a quiet conservatory where we could eat privately. The menu consisted of veggie risottos, steaks, seafood and other posh pub grub. We all chose the eggs Benedict with smoked haddock for starters, for mains I had the seafood tagliatelle , while my mom and sis chose the fish and chips. The starter arrived promptly, well seasoned cooked and perfect presentation...but we were left for awhile afterwards , no one checked about our situation or our meal.. Mains arrived in good proportion, however mine was very weighed down with mayonnaise like sauce..the girls enjoyed their hand cooked chips and lightly battered fish . Overall for £20 each for a swim, sauna, and two course meal I find this ideal. But why not advertise this on their website?? Also they need to increase their changing room size..and slightly modernise it all.

In general the building seems well maintained, but some of the public areas were being patched and re-painted whilst I was there. My room was spacious and comfortable with free DVD movie rental which is a nice touch. The cooked breakfast was better than most, although 3 staff members were chatting loudly by the entrance which is unacceptable at the level they are trying to pitch, although the rest of the time they were generally very good. Bar snacks are good, but the food and drinks are relatively expensive: expect dinner in the restaurant to cost £30+ per head. Overall though I'd return: especially if I wanted a quiet nice weekend away with a friend. It is a lovely quiet, calm rural location.

We complained politely the following morning only to be dismissed out of hand and told to go elsewhere, which we did. Thankfully, we encountered no problems in our next hotel nor in any of the subsequent hotels we stayed in in Wales, England & Scotland. To our great amusement, when we mentioned that we had stayed in countless hotels around the world, the owner said that people who complain usually say that. Clearly, they must have some experience of complaints. Over the past few years we have travelled extensively in North, Central & South America, Europe, North & South Africa & many parts of South East Asia. Obviously, we have a lot of experience of staying in hotels around the world & we certainly cannot recommend this one!

We managed to get a room at the Hotel Portmeirion through late bookings service and had the most…read morefantastic time. We were treated like royalty, reception booked us in for our evening meal at Castell Deudreath (the more modern hotel and restaurant in Portmeirion Village) and even booked the complimentary taxi service for us so we didn't have to walk up the hill. The meal was superb and the taxi brought us back to our hotel when we were finished. Our room was perhaps a little dated but charming all the same and very pretty and this was all forgotten the folowing morning when we woke up to breakfast in bed and the gorgeous view of the estuary as the sun slowly rose in the sky. I long to return to The Hotel Portmeirion again to fully explore the village and enjoy the tranquility and service we experienced there.
