Unless you know what you are looking for you simply won't find the Press Club, a small nondescript doorway with two small and discrete signs one saying 'Manchester Press Club Founded 1870 and the other 'Members Only, All Other Callers Must Use Lloyd Street Entrance' are the only clues you'll find to its existence. Now, I understand the need for such a club- it was originally opened for those working in the media that would finish very late and want somewhere to go to wind down after work, people like newspaper printers working till the early hours- but as I've stated in many other reviews, I abhor anywhere that is separative or elitist. Sure the club may want to keep idiots and trouble causers out... but isn't that what door-staff are for?

I just did it!…read more What a great concept, you pay 5p per minute for being here but everything is free including gourmet coffee (from Ancoats coffee roasters), food, juices (I'm currently quaffing some sort of fresh grapefruit juice). In fact a guy just walked around with a big barrel of tasty looking biscuits offering everyone some - is this utopia!?! The place is huge and had so much room to sit, move and just be lived in - the people it attracts all look to be in the same boat with their macbooks/creative mindset and within 5 mins I've got chatting to my neighbour in our plush leather chairs about how great it is that you don't feel under pressure to drink up and go like a standard coffee shop! Well the other day I changed that, and I have to say I was dead impressed with this place! The concept is fantastic, you pay for the time you spend there and in that time can eat and drink as much coffee and cake as you like. Some people think the concept is odd, and I can appreciate it's a little different, but look at it economically and you're practically stealing from them! I genuinely felt guilty when I paid about £2.80 for 45 minutes of time, in which I'd consumed 3 slices of cake and 2 coffees. Thats the norm for me though, not that I'm a greedy pig, just that if I'm sat working for an hour (anywhere) I'll need a couple of coffees and something to nibble on. And let me tell you this for free, it costs a damn sight more than £2.80 even if I'd make the cake myself at home! I do wonder how they cover expenses however I believe a lot of volunteer work is involved and if you do volunteer, you get free time in the place - wins all round!

They are having a special display of one of Shakespeare's plays, one of the oldest New Testaments, even artifacts from King Nebuchadnezzar's palace. They will all be on display which will be quite amazing to see. This is a must see in Manchester! Truly amazing how it has stood the test of time.

Potter-heads would appreciate the look and feel inside the library is inspired the design for Hogwarts. I'm not sure if the Factory Records exhibit is still on display, but I'm a huge fan of Factory Records bands (ie. New Order, Joy Division, Happy Mondays etc.) and bands that came out of Manchester, the Smiths, James, Buzzcocks, The Fall to name few. It was an experience seeing original handwritten lyrics, instruments played, old punk zines, photos and badges on display.
