We tried to hit up Gogi Jip Korean BBQ Restaurant for dinner the day before but they'd sold out of everything (on a Sunday evening). Crazy! We vowed to make it back the next day as we weren't expecting to find a Korean restaurant in Wanaka. We dropped in on a late Monday afternoon (2:00pm) for a late lunch. The place is enormous with several 12 seat tables. They have Korean music playing and some random Korean shows on TV. Servers are friendly but lacked the usual high quality of service. Had trouble getting water refills. They have lunch specials ($16.00 NZD) from 11:30am to 2:30pm. There's 7 options available. The dinner menu is all about the Korean BBQ: beef, pork, lamb, chicken, KFC, seafood, noodles, hot pot, bibimbap, dumplings, pancakes and tteokbokki. - Sundubu jjigae ($16.00 NZD) - spicy soft tofu stew with seafood and beef. Comes with a bowl of rice, kimchi and four banchan. Banchan was pasta salad, broccoli, glazed potatoes and glutinous rolls. The last one was fantastic; the rest weren't anything special. There was a good amount of clams inside the stew but the soup itself was barely spicy. Needed some fire. Decent Korean for a small town but our taste buds were left wanting more.

The flavors were nothing out of this world, but the curry udon noodles tasted almost exactly like I dish I love making at home. It felt like I was eating my own cooking - such a comfort for a tourist thousands of miles away from home! The curry was soupy and incredibly hearty. Our meals came out fairly quickly too, which was a relief after a long day of hiking. We got 3 complimentary sides: sliced potatoes, sliced carrots with red dipping sauce, and kimchi. The kimchi was crisp & fresh and made for a terrific flavor pair with udon noodles. As for the restaurant decor, we loved being able to sit at an eclectic and sturdy wooden table fit for two. There are generic posters strewn around the restaurant with KOREA written on them, and several Chinese scrolls as well. This was a pleasant surprise in a super touristy & overpriced town. During our last 10 minutes in the restaurant, we saw this couple standing outside the door contemplating the menu listed on the window. They walked in to grab a table, then walked right back out and undecidedly stared at the menu some more. Don't be uncertain, give this place a try! We left with full bellies and not too bad of a dent in our wallets. Fantastic!

Their hot sauce is maybe mixed with miso? This means it is not as spicy as I am used to at Korean restaurants. Maybe they are aiming for Japanese tastes rather than Korean? If you add a good dollop to your bibimbap it still tastes delicious. The highlights for me where the mussels (which came with our sea-food) and the KFC, which was really tasty. I'm glad we popped in.

It seems like they prioritized the larger party of tourists that arrived shortly after. Their tables had food all ready and the wait staff was attentive, while we listened to crickets. 3/5 food: nothing special. Portions were average, prices slightly above average, and the bulgogi was a little tough. I'd recommend only coming back if you're in a large group as their space is designed to handle large groups.

What a hidden gem!…read more My dad somehow found out about this place so we decided to try it for dinner because it seemed to be a bit out of the way (aka less people!). And we were right! We arrived a bit late, probably around 8 PM and there was only one other group in the restaurant. The waitresses here were super nice, helpful, and brought our banchan and food very quickly. I enjoyed all of the banchan except the sesame leaf which is something I've never had before but it tasted like licorice so I wasn't a fan. The kimchi was good and cucumbers were solid. I ordered the kimchi tofu soup, my mom ordered the bulgogi (they didn't have galbi), and my dad had bibimbap in the stone pot. All were delicious! The kimchi tofu soup had huge ribs of meat in it which is something you really don't see that often, and the flavor of the broth was different than usual but DELICIOUS. The bulgogi was flavorful and my dad loved the bibimbap. Overall we were super happy and FULL by the end of the meal since the waitresses kept replacing our banchan dishes. This was a great find on the second floor of the food court, definitely check it out if you are looking for some Korean noms :D

But, we were feeling tacos for dinner and it popped up as the first suggestion on Google Maps. Walking up to the stall, it was packed full of patrons eating outside, so a good sign. We got four tacos and I've detailed my thoughts below: The Bushman: there was a massive amount of pork belly and the sweet onion reduction which was good, but the huge amount led to mush when I picked up the taco. The integrity of the tortilla was hugely compromised by the toppings, so I wished there was a double tortilla situation. The Stockman: one of my favorites with the green hot sauce they have made from tomatillos and jalapeños. The chipotle créme fraiche were just three big circles on the taco, but it ended up being incredible to cut the richness from the brisket. The Fisherman: first bite and it was way salty and acidic, but I persevered through to a second, which was better. I thought that the fish itself was good, but the balance from the toppings was lacking. The Ken Tuckymwan: my absolute favorite. The freshness from the mango chunks cut through the richness from the fried chicken and that chipotle mayo. I really enjoyed this with the hot sauces they offered. Overall, the integrity of the tacos were really poor as the tortilla almost disintegrated after the second bite. But, the tacos pack a punch of flavor that makes the mess worth it.

L O C A T I O N Funny enough the Taco Medic spots on Yelp were incorrectly located (as well as on Google) and the folks there said it was an old food truck or just incorrect in general and they can't remove it or update. It's located on this inside road called Searle. It's not accessible by road so you need to walk there. M E N U The taco menu is fairly short and sweet. They have both grilled and deep fried fish, chicken, pork, steak, etc. tacos. We ended up having the pork belly and deep fried fish. The pork belly (like many pork belly we had in New Zealand) was a disappointment. Too much meat, not enough fat and should be grilled more to a crisp. The fish wasn't bad. They're both fairly the same size of tacos that we get here in California and nothing special to be honest even though the folks there said that it's not any taco we've ever had...and well there's plenty of these fusiony tacos here. The sauces on the table were fairly spicy for me esp. the mango. O V E R A L L The service was great and friendly. The seats inside were not many but they have tables outside after noon but no one was there the Saturday we left at 11am. The food was okay and priced decently as everything else in New Zealand is fairly pricey. Would go back? Sure if we wanted more of a snack, but I would not get the pork belly.
