No complaints on the tasting side, nor on the service as the girls were quick in keeping the trolleys come round as well as being pleasant and the bill wasn't too bad either. The staff were efficient and runned off their feet, but could do with a smile. The food was as good as any Chinese restaurants and the portions huge. We doggie bagged several containers from each table. We had plain chicken and duck. The roast pork is a specialty of the house and is definitely good. We liked the beans fried with mince. Prawns on a tofu base. Fish cooked in two styles, deep fried and stir fried with vegetables. Eight dishes with rice came to NZ$23/- per head. Today we ordered: Beef Offal Noodle Soup Soft tender beef offal in a not too heavy beef soup (meaning not TOOOO much MSG, in Chinese restaurants you can't avoid it...really...), chewy pillowly noodles and some actualy vegetables!!! To be honest, i prefer Beef Offal Noodle Soup at other places but my workmate think this one taste more genuine rather than covered in MSG and processed too much? i still like it if i add vinegar and chili sauce and still totally worth the money Pork Ribs Mix Noodles I didn't try this one but my workmates said the spareribs were so tender and tasty and cooked to perfection. It is simply a "wet" stirfry of sweet tomatoes, juicy tender beef pieces, and scrambled eggs all served on top of tender soft noodles. The sauce is like a gravy texture and is oh so good however my workmates think otherwise and said its like a Chinese Spaghetti Bolognese haha so true. Maybe im a bit biased on this dish. Bean Curd Salad Best dish of today. Bean curd is the thin layer of "skin" you get when the soy milk is settling. Its a firm yet soft-ish texture as the "skin" is layered on top of each other (if that even makes sense). The sauce is a vinegar, sesame oil "fresh" sort of taste with sprinklings of fresh cucumber and carrots. Definitely a must!! Seaweed Salad One of our favourites! Its similar to the Japanese version but flavour is not that heavy on the MSG. More of a garlicy, vinegar, (some MSG), sesame oil dressing? We always order this at Chinese Restaurants if we have the chance. Other things i recommend you ordering: Chives pancake! very tasty yet crispy; Cold noodles in a chili sesame sauce... its the last one on the first page and its soooooo nice and cheap!!!; Sweet and sour soup is also very very nice here with confirmation from a few of my friends haha The service is good and attentive (i dropped my chopsticks by accident and wasn't even fast enough to beat the waitress, she came and picked it up and got me a clean pair too... and i was sitting right next to the condiments/cutlery .... so nice!). English could be a little bit better but they will understand you enough to feed you, if not... its a good way to practice your Mandarin/Cantonese!!

There are no trolleys dashing by; rather, the waitresses carry around platters of piping hot bamboo steamers by the dozen. I've only visited twice so am still eating my through their dim sum goodies, but so far, I have yet to be disappointed! All the usual suspects are here, including siu mai, BBQ pork buns, pork spareribs, congee, steamed dumplings, innards and feet. They also have other, less common goodies like the sticky rice balls, which I prefer over the banana-leaf wrapped version and are definitely worth a try. I highly recommend the siu mai - they're uber succulent and a prime example of how they should be! As for dessert, the egg tarts are really good as well, but even better are their baked custard buns. If you can't find something you like from what's being carried around, you can ask for a dim sum menu (complete with coloured pictures!) and they will cook to order as well. So communication may be a little strained because many of the waitresses don't speak great English, but the staff are friendly and fast at filling up tea and clearing the tables. And VR Baker's is a bakery too, stocking not only the typical cakes and sandwiches in their cabinets, but also the dim sum offerings. Affordable, huge portions, fast and delicious, VR Baker's Restaurant truly is a hidden gem and is fast becoming my number one pick for yum cha in Auckland!
