Great food and friendly and welcoming staff. Plenty of parking available on site and off street. Highly recommend.

We were looking for a place to eat on the way out of Auckland. It's been awhile since I've had…read moreMalaysian and I'm always a sucker for a good laksa. A quick search brought up Gu Xiang Malaysian Restaurant. It's in a random small strip mall that also has a few restaurants and a Eastern Fresh grocery store. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around noon) for lunch. The place has plenty of tables and it was about half full. Completely full of Asian clientele. The servers speak Cantonese and English. Service is good here; just catch the waitress attention and you can get refills on your tea and water. The menu is massive; appetizers, noodles, noodle soup, fried rice, nasi lemak, dishes on rice, pork/beef, chicken, tofu, fish (market price), prawns, squid, vegetables (seasonal price) and others. All the meat and vegetable dishes are very pricey. - 2x Roti canai (#116) ($3.00 NZD each) - thought these come with a curry sauce dip but nope. You just get the roti canai. These were greasy but had some sweet tones to it that I wasn't expecting. Order this with the chicken curry ($12.90 NZD) instead. - Loo mai gai (#9) ($5.00 NZD) - this was pretty glutinous and had a thick, sweet oyster like sauce. We were intrigued by the photo of it on the wall. Just average. - Curry laksa with chicken curry (#21A) ($13.90 NZD) - the broth was creamy but not very spicy. I'm pretty picky with my laksa; this was better than I expected it to be. They throw in two types of noodles (thin vermicelli and yellow lo mein), tofu puffs and bean sprouts. Get it! - Seafood noodle (#20C) ($11.80 NZD) - the broth is sweet and tasted like wonton soup broth. You get yellow noodles, mix of seafood, bok choy and bean sprouts. Definitely a Chinese influenced dish. Pretty mediocre, nothing special in my books. - Hainese chicken on rice (#31) ($11.80 NZD) - the chicken was hot and tender. Came with delicious side of rice, a vegetable soup and chili garlic sauce. Simple but satisfying. Stick with the Malaysian dishes. Good portion sizes. 3.5 stars.

Great chicken laksa, very authentic Malaysian food for the soul together with the rest of the menu.read more

Mama Rich - Using a couple of props to show a sense of scale. The lunchtime portion of laksa here is huge, super tasty and spicy!

Oh my gosh! I could smash four mains and three desserts, but this lunchtime laksa! Tastes so good,…read morebut the portion is currently beyond my capacity. I popped in to Mama Rich again for an authentic laksa because last week I ordered a laksa in Singapore and got a Tom Yum Soup. I felt robbed! Feeling so much better having sipped and slurped my way through this bowl of laksa goodness. This cafe is a favourite for many familiar with Malay cuisine, even Malaysians. Evident by their attendance and quaffing of the hearty noodle soups. Their baked goods here are seriously good too. Try their afghans...they actually taste like....well, afghans. Of all the laksas I've had in Auckland, this ranks in top three for taste but number one for sheer volume and there's plenty of chicken in it too. For a lunchtime special, two would feel sated sharing a bowl of laksa.

Well however the businesses are joined or not , Mama Rich had the exact same menu as Selera . I had the char kieow ( sorry spelling) and it was the same as Selera , but without the spice and charred flavour that I love so much at Selera . All the dishes looked good and I wish I was more adventurous to try something else . That's not too say I didn't like it ,but personally I feel Selera is better . Mama Rich was clean and quiet for families and a cafe feel , no free tea here . (And when I asked if there was tea like at Selera the server looked at me like I was a crazy person). I like the noise at Selera and the jostling for tables , it feels more authentic. I love Malaysian food and I'll be sure to give Mama Rich another try , but I'm sure I'll be enticed back to Selera before long .

All dishes were well made and tasty. The service was fast and friendly, as we could hear the sizzling of the wok and the sounds of mandarin instructions coming from the kitchen. An Asian restaurant is perhaps not the first place you would think of to visit for dessert, but we…read morewere on the lookout for a place in Auckland serving Southeast Asian desserts to satisfy our Singaporean taste buds. The hunt began with a visit to Blossom Court in Panmure, where we ordered two traditional favourites: Ice Kacang ($5.50) and Bubur Cha Cha ($3.50). For those unfamiliar with ice kacang, it's a uniquely Southeast Asian concoction of shaved ice with red beans, jelly, sweet syrup, and a myriad of other toppings... basically a snow cone gone berserk. Blossom Court's rendition was reasonably priced and looked promising, but it soon became obvious that there was too much ice, resulting in a total teeth- and brain-numbing experience. It needed another dousing of condensed milk and the multi-coloured rose syrup, and perhaps a spoonful of red beans, to make it more flavoursome so I wasn't biting into straight up shaved ice. Although its name may suggest some sort of exotic dance, bubur cha cha is actually a warm, coconut-milk based dessert soup, containing a medley of sweet potatoes, taro/yam and sago pearls. Bubur cha cha is only sold on Sundays in Blossom Court, though it's probably not worth the special trip. It had a slightly more diluted base than what we're used to. Like the ice kacang, the bubur cha cha just needed that something extra to live up to its authentic taste. We would be willing to return to give their main dishes a try, but insofar as their desserts go, Blossom Court's offerings were pretty mediocre. And so the hunt continues!
