Unfortunately, we had the worst night's sleep of our week long trip. I booked The Legacy Rose and Crown several months in advance of our trip, and when we checked in, we were told there was a party taking place that night. When we returned to our hotel after dinner and went up to our room, it seemed that we were located directly above the restaurant where the party was being held. Although the music was right in line with my tastes, we were really hoping for a good night's sleep since we had to be on the road at 7AM, but sleep wasn't to be had since the music continued until midnight. I pulled my ear plugs out of my bag and turned on a noise machine, but even that wasn't enough to block out the pounding bass. Honestly, the hotel should not have even rented room we were in on that date considering the noise below. If we had stayed at this hotel on a different night, I think our experience would have been much better - it's clean, pretty, and convenient to the cathedral and other sites. The staff was very friendly and gave us bagged lunches since we were checking out before breakfast. I wish I could leave a better review, but since the primary purpose of a hotel is to provide sleeping accommodations and we weren't able to get much sleep, two stars it is.

We have been to centerparcs over 10 times with and without kids and always have a great time. This…read moreis my favourite of the UK based venues - the rest of the family are big fans of Elveden - flatter and more compact. It rained all week on our last visit but didn't stop the fun. They all have great pools - the kids love the rapid runs snaking outside. Make sure you book your activities early to make sure you get the slots you want - on our latest visit we competed in badminton and pool tournaments, sampled archery, dared to face the aerial challenge including the zipwire over the lake, got splatted at paintball and relaxed in the aqua sana. We have come home for a rest. Accommodation is decent and staff friendly - the grounds are well kept and yes there are lots of hills here. Manageable without a car - only a short trip from Warminster Station. Its a bit like a visit to waitrose in a forest...lots of guardian reading middle class parents struggling to cope without mobile reception.....Already planning our next visit......

Wow! My girlfriend at the time and I discovered this little gem of a B&B tucked away in the Mendip…read moreHills while on holiday in the West Country a couple of years ago. It is truly the most wonderful romantic hideaway. Batts Farm is located just outside Cheddar. A tip for drivers - if you're approaching from Cheddar, the signpost for Nyland on the left hand side is obscured by 2 other signs but you're looking out for Latches Lane on the right hand side. If you hit the sign for Rodney Stoke, you've gone too far! Don't worry - turn around (as we've done twice!) and the sign to Nyland is much more obvious heading back towards Cheddar. The approach to the property is along a narrow farm lane but be brave and keep going straight on. The sign for Batts Farm is obvious when you reach the property. The first things that strikes you on arrival is the amazing warmth of the welcome by the owners Clare and John. They truly make your visit memorable with their hospitality. On both visits, we were offered tea/soft drinks and a piece of delicious homemade cake and biscuits on arrival. These were yummy and Clare's talents as a cook and baker continued to be demonstrated throughout the visits. In the summer, we had tea in the summerhouse, watching the squirrels and birds scamper across the lawn. Drinks are available for guests in the summerhouse fridge, another sign of the generosity that reflects the special nature of this B&B. On the colder second visit, we had tea in the warm inviting lounge. We stayed in the four poster room on both visits and the room is nicer than 4/5 star hotel rooms we've been in. The room is elegantly decorated in antique style with a sumptuous four poster bed and a large picture window looks out onto the gorgeous Mendip Hills. The bathroom is enormous with a giant bath and a big walk-in shower, which would have been an ideal hiding place for at least 10 people in a game of sardines! The toiletries provided are classy and my girlfriend especially enjoyed the big fluffy towels. The whole pampering atmosphere of the room is rounded off by the flat screen telly, free bottles of water and a biscuit tin of Clare's home baked biscuits! Breakfast is taken in the airy dining room. The bread is home baked along with other rolls - who needs Hovis when you have bread of this quality? Clare offers other home made specialities to start such as plums stewed in cinnamon and hot baked grapefruit (unique in my experience and highly recommended). This is followed by an enormous cooked breakfast. The locally sourced ingredients just tasted like nothing else I'd eaten before, being a supermarket shopper. The bacon was so sweet that I had to find out her supplier (ask and she'll tell you!). On one day, Clare also cooked the lightest ricotta pancakes. On most days, we were so well fed that we didn't need lunch! Clare and John recommended some nice places for dinner and even rang to book us a table. We enjoyed nice meals at the Inn at Rodney Stoke and Rajah Tandoori in Wells. Batts Farm also provided an ideal base to explore the many varied local attractions. We enjoyed visiting Cheddar Gorge and Caves - one ticket buys you entry into all the attractions. If you don't manage to visit all of them on that day, the tickets remain valid for 10 years! Wells, the smallest city in England, is 5 miles down the road with a lovely cathedral. We also enjoyed activities as diverse as walking on the beach at Weston-Super-Mare, go-karting just down the road from the farm, car-booting at the same karting venue on Sunday, browsing through the many garden centres in the area and satisfying the retail therapy itch at Clarks Village Outlets at Street. However, bad weather has stopped us going up Jacob's Ladder at Cheddar Gorge, so a good excuse to go back again to this wonderful B&B! They have added a studio room since I was last there and judging from the pictures on the website, it's just as comfy as the other rooms.

The restaurants were fantastic (apart from Huck's, the food was cold here), with Strada being a particular favourite. Being just the two of us we spent some time in the spa, which although expensive, was very relaxing and got us into the holiday mood. We stayed in a Woodland lodge and I belive it is worth paying the little bit extra for this, they are much better than the comfort lodges.

Although we've been here at all different times of the year, we love coming here in the winter because after dark is when the place really looks its best - the path lights twinkle through the trees and the plaza dome looks like something from outer space! Swimming outside in warm water or heading down the rapids when it's dark and freezing cold is surreal, and even just watching is amazing - the steam rising off the water into the crisp winter air is magical. The only thing that stops me from giving this place five stars is the price - it's not the cheapest holiday, especially when you factor in eating out, activities and all the shops that you have to get the kids past on the way to and from the swimming pool!

This is a wooded area with rings, that get larger and larger going outward, or smaller as they go inward. The rings, of earthen mounds, are what remains of the Roman Fortress. People come here to have pic nics, play frisbee, walk the dog, fly kites, get hay fever, and what is best, play 'wide games'. (The sort when you are in teams, with 3 'lives' each, with objectives to accomplish whilst trying simultaneously to avoid the other team or kill them.) No real life killing, hopefully. I haven't been to play games for a while, well not that sort anyway, but it is a great place. Now I come to think of it, the last time I was there, I was waiting for the RAC!! See, a good landmark to give them!

I loved walking round the Badbury Rings, the wild flowers there are amazing and there are loads of…read morebutterflies. The views are absolutely stunning. I was lucky to have the place near enough to myself, and i can't imagine that it would ever seem really busy because it is so big. Really interesting, nice to be able to try and imagine the place in its days as a fortress.
