Nice hotel, and honestly not bad for a small town like Salisbury. When we were there the main patronage was of a much older generation... seems like a little resort hotel for old folks around here.
I just decided to dock a star due to some weirdness in our food arrangements.
We didn't get the Christmas package since we did not know our plans as of booking. Upon arrival, the friendly front desk lady tried to sell us the Christmas Eve set dinner. As we arrived quite late and tired due to train cancellations, we decided to take it.
When we showed up at the restaurant, there was a little confusion before they seated us. The food was actually quite delicious, but it was weird and felt like they had some miscommunications ("Are you sure you have a reservation?" "The front desk told us to be here at 7:30pm" "They're the ones the kitchen was talking about!" "Oh alright then"). The restaurant looked much emptier than they let on as well.
The next night, we also decided to have a meal there as we wanted to stay in for the Dr Who Christmas special. We talked to the front desk, ensured we had a table, then showed up at the allotted time only to be told that the buffet was to be cleaned up soon. A waiter came by, said he wasn't going to let us go hungry, and allowed us to take food from the buffet table as we like, but we received no wait service at all as a result. Well, they didn't attempt to charge us either, so it was rather...strange and interesting. The restaurant was as empty as before with only 3-4 tables occupied, and the food was average this time, definitely not worth the price we were quoted.
To be honest, I did expect the buffet to consist of the leftovers of the Christmas Eve meal, remade into other dishes ;)
If you couldn't find a place to eat, the hotel restaurant is a decent choice, and the service was good when you could get it. The meals seemed to have floating prices as they would quote us lower values as time went by -- so be aware of it, or get the package and stay in like all the other old couples do. read more
