The stock they have is awesome, the shop is super nicely laid out, really like stepping back in time. The guitars and ukulele's are beautiful, and genuinely good prices. I spoke to someone on the phone who was knowledgeable and really kind, however when I went in, the guy serving just made us feel like we were an inconvenience. We spent over 200euro all in, and it wasn't until the next day when I went to pick up one of the guitars he showed a bit more empathy and gratitude. He mentioned he was grateful for the custom, especially as everyone is going online now these days. I mean, I get that, however, the day before he just couldn't have been less enthused. Buying a ukulele for my mum, guitar for my nephew... all new to this incredible world of string instruments... If it had been me, I would have offered suggestions, helped out, maybe thrown in a couple of plectrums, even a re-string, but no, nothing of the kind. I remember 24 years ago (I'm 37 now) going into Dublin city to these music shops to stare at guitars, the people in the shops were so kind and accommodating, letting me try them out, offering tips and suggestions. I miss that.

I discovered this place via Yelp and I heard it named by some local record collector and when I visited I found it pretty cool even if I do not collect or even play retro games. What I liked in this store in the first was the attitude: lotsa records everywhere, lotsa turntables to try them by yourself, lotsa selection and fair prices. The place is little, is literally underground and the people working there are pretty young and they listen to very good music with old time stereo systems that sound ok especially for the place. Someone in Dublin said to me this businness is run by Trinity College students (and it could be considering, lucky them, they are pretty young: I met three of them, a guy looking like a young Mick Jagger, a very nice lady spinning great country infected records and the self called Boss I said before (he played Sufjan Steve records, so he shouldn't be that bad :-). The young Jagger played a super cool The Clean record after we had a talk about new psychedelia and paisley underground (I found a True West record for 5 euro, or 3 records for 12 euro department down below) and I recommended it to him to check it out. So, what I really like in this store, was diggin' in that "3 records for 12 euro department", were you can really find everything, a lot of any and every type of stuff in various configurations and conditions! Some have broken covers, some got terrible vinyl condition, then same, many, are good and they can be a real deal, then they still are like they presented them: second rate purchase for one reason or another and it needs someone like me to appreciate it and buy it, just if the price is reasonable. So the first time I was very happy becouse, after having all the fun in the store listen to those records, selecting them and finally choosing a big bunch of them to buy, I was greeted by the "young Mick Jagger guy" an appreciable, appreciated and expected discount. I went out of the store very happy and find the time to come back two or three hours before the fly to come back home few days later. Sadly "the young mick jagger" left the store before I completed my new selection to purchase and when it was time to pay there was "the boss" to the register and the attitude was completely different related with the price policy even if I said the other guy had a completely different approach and it was in that moment he explained to me he was the boss there. I let my selection there literally in his hands (no purchase) becouse it was impossible to find a fair agreement (and I was a bit disappointed) then I still recommend this place becouse it is still my fav place for records in Dublin (hoping to find the right guy at the register). PS: I was still lucky: pretty much what I was interested for (circa 30 records) was bought in my first visit, those additional 10 records I left at the register wasn't essential so "the boss" didn't impacted too much on my The Rage experience. No too much "rage" at the end. :-)

Anyway, i picked up a few things and was wowed by the prices on he covers, some of these films wee fairly new to DVD! then i decided to look inside the box to make sure that the DVD was actually in there and they were not just selling the box or some mad scam like that, nope, the DVD was in side but it looked like the last person to touch the DVD had just taken their hand out of a pot of jam or something. how had that happened? then i saw the sign on the wall, one with teeny tiny writing on he bottom. it explained that all the stock in the shop was second hand stock or stock that had previously been rental stock or display stock and thats why the prices were so cheap. On top of that there were no guarantees on you purhase either so you couldnt return a DVD that didnt work (possibly due to jam smears!). So basicallyl this shop is like a big game of VD lottery, you migh be lucky enough o bag one tha works for your three euro! like buying a scratch card maybe but in this case you were looking for something without the scratches! I didnt have time to open and close all my boxes and examine each CD so i left, this might be a good place if your looking for a deal and you have time, i just wasnt for me unfortunatly!

The shop is narrow but packed and reasonably priced even in this age of internet shopping. Whether you've read all the Frank Miller stories out there or you've just heard of Alan Moore, this is not an off-putting nerd-paradise that you might expect. That may have something to do with the daylight streaming in the window.

Combine that with the fact that anime scares me, and you have the reason why I have never, ever been inside a comic book shop. But, I decided to be brave and check Sub-City out, for the sake of adventure and boredom. Now, having absolutely no knowledge of comics, going into a lion's den of this sort was extremely intimidating. I really didn't have much to look for or at, because I wasn't looking for anything and didn't know what I was looking at. But, the guy at the desk greeted me like he would any other comic book dork and I was enlivened. I perused the comics, marveled at the amazing artwork in some and checked out the models, which are probably a lot of fun to put together. The guy was tied up with another customer, but when they were done I knew he was going to come talk to me and I got all panicked. Lo and behold, he sauntered over and chippily said, "how's it going?" "I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just looking around. Huuyuuuh thanks!," I blubbered. He laughed and proceeded to say it was totally cool and to let him know if I needed help. He handled my dork meltdown well, which makes me think he probably deals with that a lot.
