What we actually found was a frustrating barrier to entry, not just into the store's event, but into the hobby itself. Let's talk about the Gundam TCG beta event. You'd think being physically present, cash in hand, eager to participate would be enough. Nope. The real gatekeeper? A smartphone. No phone, no game. It doesn't matter if you're a dedicated player or a teen excited to get into the hobby--if you don't have the app, you're out. And let's not forget, to even use the app, you have to hand over your personal data and jump through digital hoops. When I called ahead to confirm, I was given a workaround: "Just emulate the app on a computer." Sounds simple, right? Except, if you actually read the terms of service, that's a violation of the rules. So, the store's solution? Encourage rule-breaking just to participate in an event they're hosting. Yikes. This is exactly how you alienate an audience. Five eager teens, $70 per player, all turned away because they didn't meet a completely unnecessary tech requirement. And that's just us. We have a group of dads and teens always wanting to dabble in new games to see if they hold their weight. There were plenty of other potential players in the same boat. Imagine the revenue lost. Imagine the enthusiasm squashed. All because we agree smart phones dont belong in our teens hands. Now we got this store trying to tell us our kids need smart phones. This store, like its now-closed predecessor in the Mills, seems to have forgotten a key business principle: know your customer. Not every hobbyist is glued to a smartphone, and forcing a tech barrier on a physical card game is absurd. We play these games because we would rather play these than sit on a phone. The whole situation is ironic. 1/10--because at the end of the day, a comic shop should bring people into the hobby, not shut them out. Good luck--you're going to need it.

Atomic Games West is a brand new game store that just opened up here in Golden. The space is on…read morethe smallish side, but there's plenty of room for both products and games. They carry a selection of most wargaming brands (40K/Fantasy, Warmachine, Malifaux, Infinity), including some used figures, some board games, and Magic: the Gathering. They also sell used video games for all sorts of systems, including original Nintendo up through the PS2, as well as controllers and peripherals. The owner, Wes, is helpful and friendly, and is willing to order models or games he doesn't currently have in stock, including Forge World stuff. They currently have two game tables with space for more that are being built, with a decent amount of terrain. The store has gaming most nights, and will be a host for FNM. If you're in the neighborhood, Atomic Games is definitely a gaming store to check out!

My girlfriend and I stopped in later in the evening for a very small purchase, just a pack of card…read moresleeves, and unfortunately, the experience was unpleasant enough that neither of us has much interest in returning. We completely understand that we came in later in the day. However, the store still had approximately an hour and a half before closing, so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect basic customer service during posted business hours. The first thing we noticed upon entering was the smell. There was an extremely strong combination of body odor, what smelled like marijuana, and incense throughout the store. It was overwhelming enough that it made the space uncomfortable to browse, which is disappointing because the store appears to have a decent selection. I also noticed that concerns about the store's odor and or customer service have apparently been addressed elsewhere by referencing an individual being on the autism spectrum. To be clear, I have no issue whatsoever with employees or customers being neurodivergent, nor would I expect anyone to be excluded or treated differently because of a disability. However, that does not make concerns about the cleanliness, odor and professionalism of a public-facing business invalid. Maintaining a reasonably clean and comfortable environment is a basic business standard, regardless of the disabilities or personal circumstances of anyone inside. Using someone's autism as an explanation for why customers should simply accept an unpleasant environment is neither a fair response to the customer nor, frankly, particularly respectful to autistic people. The heavy use of incense also does nothing to improve the situation. If the intention is to mask the underlying odor, it unfortunately has the opposite effect. It simply adds another strong smell on top of an already unpleasant one. Given that multiple customers have apparently raised concerns about the store's odor, it is difficult to understand why the response seems to be dismissal rather than addressing the environment itself. Incense is not a substitute for ventilation, cleanliness, or reasonable standards for a customer-facing space. At a certain point, repeated complaints about the same issue stop being isolated personal preferences and become feedback worth taking seriously. Customers should not be mocked or dismissed for pointing out a problem that management appears unwilling to meaningfully address. What really made the experience unwelcoming, though, was the interaction, or lack thereof, with the employee behind the counter. He was playing World of Warcraft when we entered and seemed visibly put out when he had to stop playing long enough to ring up our card sleeves. I even attempted to make casual small talk with him during the transaction, and we were outright ignored. Not given a short answer, not met with someone who simply wasn't particularly talkative, ignored. We weren't asking him to search through inventory, answer complicated questions, or provide extensive assistance. We were making a simple purchase and attempting to be friendly. Somehow, even that felt like an inconvenience. I understand that hobby shops often have a more relaxed atmosphere, and that's part of their appeal. There is, however, a considerable difference between a relaxed environment and one where customers feel as though their presence is interrupting an employee's personal time. Between the overwhelming smell and the remarkably unwelcoming customer service, we left with the impression that our business simply wasn't wanted. That's perfectly fine, we'll make sure not to inconvenience them with it Edit: You'd be lucky to have 20 people in your store. If your regular clientele enjoying themselves requires everyone else to tolerate overwhelming body odor and nonexistent customer service, perhaps you should host private game nights instead of running a public business. They had a dr doom fig I got which I was looking for but they charge 50 bucks for should have been at least 45 but I still bought it. And I got a doom comic. If I was reviewing only on figs it get like 2 starts but I'm not. If I was reviewing only on comic easy 5 starts but again I'm not. It's the biggest comic book store I have ever been in by far, and I have been in many; in fact, it's almost like Comic Con minus a million jostling people in cosplay. And pretty much, if they don't have it, it's not out there (well, almost: we found their Godzilla merch to be a bit thin). About half the store is staff only because it's the stacks of back issues of comics, but there's still a ton to see in the part the public can access: toys, games, comics, graphic novels, figurines, collectibles, and so on. I got a Sailor Moon lunch box, and he got a graphic novel. There are buttons everywhere to push if you need aid from staff, and the guy who assisted us in getting something from a case was indeed helpful. Overall, worth a stop!
