The Golden Gate Live Steamers is available only on Sundays if weather permits. It is right next to the Tilden Train. It is donation-based. The folks running the train and escorting folks in are kind and lovely. They also give free train stickers to kids. My boys enjoy it very much and always ask to return. I highly recommend it if you have little kids and want to go out in nature. You can even have a nice picnic nearby and watch the beautiful bay view.

    Miniature steam train

The miniature steam train is kind of a hidden secret. It's not mentioned on the Tilden park attraction list. To get here, start at the entrance of the big steam train and continue walking all the way to the back until you find a curvy road which will lead you to the miniature steam train. If you liked the big steam train, you will definitely like the miniature steam train. It's not just for kids as adults can ride it too. Admission is free and the ride is about 5 minutes long. They usually open on sundays from 12pm - 3pm. Sometimes they open earlier and end later. There's a bunch of random toys, statues, figures and structures scattered throughout the train ride. It actually made me feel like a small person in one of those toy model trains that circles around the town. The ride is very peaceful and scenic. Try to find the 5 bears the next time you come here.

To get to Golden Gate Live Steamers, just walk down this little path from Redwood Valley Railway.

For us, the $100 was well-spent on one adult and two children. The event started with the Easter Bunny greeting every attendee and handing children a basket for the egg hunt. Breakfast included pastries, pancakes, bacon, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, and nearly every non-alcoholic breakfast/brunch drink under the sun. All attendees got unlimited Merry-go-round rides, which continued even after the event ended at 11am and the Merry-go-round opened to the public. Jenbert Jr. 2 loved the Merry-go-round and didn't want to get off-- and since she was unlimited, she didn't have to! The Easter egg hunt was very well-organized, with lots of eggs for even wobbly toddlers to find. The employees were good about making sure that there were lots of eggs for everyone. Jenbert Jr. 1 & 2 are still raving over the goodies that were in their baskets. Finally, there were a bunch of fun Easter-themed inflatables with bunnies, chicks, and even a Scooby-Doo with Bunny ears and a carrot! And let's not forget about the photo-op with the Easter Bunny! I'd bring back JJ1 & JJ2 next year, it was money well-spent and a very well-put-together event.

Before you get too holidazed, may I suggest the following: Research shows that people's most cherished memories are not of things and objects, but of experiences. Thus, gifting an experience vs. an object will bring more joy to your loved ones. And as gift-worthy experiences go, I can think of few better stocking stuffers for your local lovies than a spot on a Savor Oakland Food Tour. I've been lucky to tour with Savor twice now. First thanks to Yelp, I was blessed to get in for one of the Jack London Square area. Carlo, Savor creator and main guide, is both knowledgeable and genuinely warm as a guide. His love for Oakland is also apparent, which puts real heart into the tour. The destinations may rotate, but ours included Chop Bar, Urban Winery, Home of Chicken & Waffles, Forge, Bocanova, Miette and a nosh in transit. Between the food/drink stops, Carlo will call out some of the history and architecture of the area, which ushered more than a couple "I did not know that!" inner responses. My second tour, of Oakland Chinatown (half-priced thanks to Yelp), was a wonder. At tour's beginning, I questioned how much Carlo could show me that I didn't try already, but by tour's end I was happily humbled. I won't divulge all the locations, but some of the stops included: - noodles from Classic Guilin, whose cuisine is from a region in China off the beaten occidental track; - Vietnamese noshes and a Jamison Hot Toddy from the super-cool folks at Tay Ho (one of 74 reviews I'm overdue on); - A magical place where fortune cookies come into existence; - vegetarian Chinese pork fried rice that makes you think "I Can't Believe It's Not Pork"; and.. - just when you think you can't eat another bite (think of Monty Python's "Meaning of Life" character who's offered a "wafer theeen mint?"), another tasting ending with amazing fried banana dessert. Seriously... we were stuffed. Rounding out the awesome food and historic sights: the tours are small enough that by their end you develop a real bond with your fellow travelers. That connection between people, from different walks of life, guided by Carlo -- is for me a prime example of what makes Oakland such a great place to call home. A very easy five stars for Savor Oakland. A thoughtful and unexpected great holiday gift (even for yourself) for this holiday season. Give local, and live local, all.

For anyone not hardcore Chinese, like myself, this tour is a necessity for braving the Andrew Zimmern-like delights of Oakland Chinatown. I mean, let's face it. Many of us are are going to have at least some amount of trepidation about diving right into the restaurants & markets of Oakland Chinatown. But with Carlo's trusty & knowledgable guidance, we were all able to relax & really enjoy the wonders that this non-touristy Chinatown has to offer. & it wasn't all about food. Though there was more than enough downright delicious food at each our 4 restaurant stops to stuff all of us, even with plenty of walking during the tour. The Oakland Chinatown tour also had a healthy helping of history mixed in that deepened the understanding & appreciation of this neighborhood. Savor Oakland Food Tours' tour of Oakland Chinatown was truly a mouth-watering & eye-opening experience. Knowing what a great tour this is, I know I'll have to check out their Jack London Square tour sometime.

As we crossed the bridge we saw Treasure Island and passed through the short Yerba Buena Island Tunnel. On the other side of the tunnel the San Francisco skyline shrouded in fog came into view. We took the first exit on the right and proceeded to the Embarcadero. As we traveled along the Embarcadero we saw the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street where a Farmers Market was in progress. As we continued we saw many restaurants and piers. We passed the Exploratorium, the cruise ship terminal. (The Port of San Francisco hosts over 80 cruise ship calls and 300,000 passengers annually at the James R. Herman (Pier 27) and Pier 35 cruise terminals.) We passed Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, The Cannery, Cable Car turn-a-round and Ghiradeli Square. All along the Embarcadero we had great views of the Bay and Alcatraz. Next, we traveled for a few blocks on Van Ness Avenue and then turned West on Lombard Street. We traveled down Lombard to the Palace of Fine Arts, our first stop. The Palace of Fine Arts was originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. We took pictures and then returned to the bus. Upon leaving the Palace of Fine Arts we traveled north towards the Golden Gate Bridge which we learned that the name has nothing to do with the color of the bridge which is International Orange. We traveled across the bridge which was barely visible because of the fog, which is typical for this time of year. (Most homes in SF do not have A/C because of the natural air conditioning of the fog.) At the end of the bridge we pulled into the North Golden Gate Vista Point. We took pictures, but the bridge was obscured by the fog and we could not see San Francisco at all. Benjamin Robinson took a group picture of all of us and the grandchildren of George Andrews--the first cousins. Following that, we traveled back across the GGB to SF past the SF Presidio on Presidio Parkway. We turned west on Geary Street and took Geary to Lands End Lookout. We were able to spend a little bit of time here to visit the visitor center and take pictures. From Lands End Lookout we were able to see the ruins of the Sutro Baths, the Cliff House, Seal Rock, and where the San Francisco Bay pours into the Pacific Ocean. Benjamin Robinson was able to get a great group picture and he was able to get into the picture as well. Upon returning to the bus we traveled for a few blocks along Ocean Beach on the Great Highway and then turned up John F. Kennedy Drive into Golden Gate Park past the Beach Chalet and the Dutch Windmill. (Golden Gate Park is 20% larger than Central Park in NYC.) We continued on JFK Drive passing buffalo, soccer fields, manmade lakes, barbeques, and bounce houses until we stopped at the Music Concourse. The area of the Music Concourse includes a stage, Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, and the Academy of Sciences. We departed the Music Concourse and continued through the park past the Conservatory of Flowers which first opened in 1879. It is the oldest building in GGP. Upon leaving the park we turned right on Stanyan Street and then left on Haight Street where we entered the Haight-Ashbury district that became a very popular place for hippies and flower children especially during the Summer of Love in 1967. We continued up Haight past Ashbury and made a circle around to see the "Painted Ladies" (restored Victorian homes painted with at least three colors) and then down to Oak Street to an area named the Panhandle. We made a right turn on Oak. We turned left on Franklin and then right on Grove. We passed the War Memorial Opera House (first meeting of the United Nations was held there), Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco City Hall (London Breed is the first African American female mayor of SF), and the Old SF Public Library which is now an Asian Art Museum. We drove up Larken Street and turned right on California Street. We went to the top of Nob Hill where we saw Grace Cathedral, the Masonic Temple, Pacific Union Club, the Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins hotels. As we continued down from Nob Hill on California Street we crossed Grant Avenue in the heart of Chinatown. We made a left turn on Kearny Street, a left turn on Broadway, and a right turn on Columbus. We passed through North Beach and from the bus we looked up Lombard to see the "crookedest street in the world." From Columbus Street we made our way to Pier 39 where the bus driver dropped us off for one hour. He picked us up at 3:00 PM and took us back across the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Bridge to the Marriott Hotel by 4:00 PM. We had a great time. Everyone was thrilled at the sites and there was such a beautiful spirit of family love.

Ok, fine, just a tidbit about the anniversary...my man booked Golden Gate Helicopters to take us to Napa for a special dinner. When we drove up to the super exclusive (never before known by us) private airline portion of SFO airport, I had the opportunity to meet Tim and Tom. Both greeted us with welcoming smiles and gave us a little insight on what it feels like to go on a helicopter (think of yourself as sitting on a washing machine was their analogy). Basically, we weren't blindly led to a helicopter for the first time and told to put on our seat belts. A very good explanation was provided to us and it really calmed me down because I realized I was slightly freaked out. Tim and Tom have a ridiculous amount of experience and they share a great sense of humor. The ride to Napa and back was beyond excellent - I got to experience the Bay Area in a never before seen way - from thousands of miles up in the sky! Everything was smooth except for one funny little episode where my husband asked if Tim and Tom wanted to "crash" at our place due to the fog rolling in...while we were in mid air! Haha...not. Helicopter tours/rides ain't cheap, but I highly recommend this luxurious "ride" for a truly unforgettable, special and unique event in your life. Kudos and thank you again T&T! There are few aspects that I recommend their service for: Cleanliness, Attitude, punctuality, easiness and skillfulness. Their cars are always clean and spotless. There were couple occasions that outside of car was little dusty but not at a level that would disturb me. Most of the time it shines like a diamond. However, the most important aspect is the interior of car and I have never had a single incident with cleanliness and amenities. Cars were always been stocked up and detailed. All drivers that have picked me up was courteous , attentive and respectful that everything was at enough dose that you feel their warm smiles and feel like special. In my first few bookings, I was uncomfortable of a fear that driver won't show up and I would miss my flight or get late to my meetings. However, they have never been late but almost always early with text message that says your driver is ready and waiting for you. Hasan totally eliminated my obsession with triple checking each booking that I always know that he is on top of his schedule and will never let me down. I also like the convenience of texting them to book my trips and everything else gets done automatically by their internal policy. I book my trip as easy as one text with pick up time or just a flight number for them to track my flight for delays. Finally the most important thing in car services is that the skills of driver. These people are amazing with their smooth rides, ambient music and excellent navigation skills. I have never experience a hard break like the ones in daily uber rides and they have always get me to my destination earlier than expected. I would especially recommend Hasan for his knowledge of all the backroads to skip traffic anytime of the day. Their pricing is fair especially compared to uber black rates that we get fixed price regardless of the time of traffic for at least 20% cheaper rate. What would make me more happy? - to get the same service for even cheaper price but in reality, it won't be possible due to high expense of such companies to maintain quality and services which is understandable. Long story short, these guys are the best and I am grateful that I came across with their service.
