I had the shrimp hibachi lunch. It is pretty darn good. My only problem with the restaurant is too fault. When you sit down for lunch, they give you four huge menus. It's ridiculous. And unfortunately, my waitress didn't really speak to me. Didn't greet me. Didn't tell me anything nothing even wish you brought the check. Most of the food was inedible. We decided to dine, and it was a weird atmosphere. The soup dumplings tasted identical to the ones you buy at Costco. Even had the identical markings. The fish all tasted like it had been sitting out and not fresh at all. The sauce on too of the fried fish we had was overly salty. The food did reflect what was said on the menu. We were greeted for drinks and then NEVER waited on after 20-30 minutes despite other people coming in after us and getting their orders. We were totally ignored. The establishment was hot with apparently no air conditioning. They told us we could move to another table which would not have solved the problem. They had a fan on one table which they turned our way. Not very classy. We decided to leave by going to to cashier area to pay for the glass of wine we had and explained it was because no one ever came to take our order. They did not apologize or even care. We arrived in Covington March 4th and wanted to pick up something easy to take back to our vacation rental. We called in an order for the shredded pork with garlic and green pepper for me, $19.95 and my husband wanted one of the shrimp dishes, and crab Rangoon. When we arrived back at the rental, I opened my dish to find a healthy serving of vegetables and no meat. Zero shredded pork. It was late, traffic was crazy, so I just ate the Rangoon. There were two employees, one who was in training and one who did all the actual cooking. Service wasn't fast, but I ordered at least 10 different things - most of them sushi rolls - so some extra wait time is to be expected with only one person making the food. If there were less than a one star review that would be the appropriate star count to give Golden Koi. The owner couldn't be a nicer person, he's warm, welcoming and very personable. He left shortly after I was seated and that's where the positive experience ended. The person who served my friend and I should not be involved in restaurants as she doesn't understand how to read a table much less the most simple of steps involved in table service. She asked me 4 times before the rest of my party arrived if I would like to order appetizers. She repeatedly asked for our order when we were clearly not ready to order. She had no knowledge of the menu. She didn't offer any beverage service besides water and then didn't refill any waters until asked and seemed very annoyed by the request. The restaurant closes at 9pm, at 8:15 she began closing the dining room, turned the lights up, closed all of the curtains except the ones directly behind me she couldn't reach, we were not done with our food and she picked up my plate including my chop sticks so I ate the rest of my food with my fingers. We were the only table there, on a Friday night, there were no other diners and the phone did not ring a single time, I arrived at 6pm. The sushi was edible and reflected the price points and I have no issue with at all. Once it was obvious that we were not welcome, while I was in the restroom, my guest asked when the restaurant closed and she articulated that, although it was 8:15, and they close at 9, that the chef had another restaurant and needed to leave. I've made numerous attempts to contact the owner in order to avoid leaving a review of this nature. I wasn't able to contact him via telephone as the server answered the phone every time this week and said he wasn't available. Before leaving this review I read through several others which state the same issues with the server, she is simply not equipped nor does she care to interact with diners. Went in later in the evening because my friend and I were hungry. It was the first time we ate there so we didn't know what we wanted. We were the only ones in there and it was DEAD silent. No music. Nothing. Just the waitress and some random drunk woman talking. We got out food and it wasn't worth the price at all. My friend's sushi was gross, and my food taste and looked like it was pre-cooked and de-thawed chicken. The only thing I can say good things about is the miso soup. I wouldn't be so brutal in my review if the waitress wouldn't have had an attitude. I can't believe I didn't notice until my friend told me after we left. She openly insulted us complaining that we came in an hour before close and didn't know what we wanted to eat. We were out 30 minutes before they closed. If I would've paid attention to what she was saying, I would've walked out right then. No aggression to the staff, but that waitress needs a lesson on customer service. We went to Golden Koi on a Wed. for their happy hour deal. We ordered crab rangoons and vegetable tempura for our app, a large sake, crunchy roll, spicy tuna, and a unicorn roll. A couple small notes: - their sake has a fruity sort of flavor, I don't know what kind of sake they use, but it was pretty tasty - I LOVE their rangoons, but my bf is not a fan. They have loads of green onions in them (yyaaasssss) - their crunchy rolls are pretty typical, i don't know how you could mess those up - We got two full rolls of something we didn't even order, so they didn't charge us, she said it was her mistake. Looked like fried shrimp, cucumber, with eel on top. The shrimp was HORRIBLY fishy. It just didn't taste right at all. I just wasn't impressed by the overall trip at all. I've been looking for a place on the Northshore that has DanDan noodles and they didn't disappoint. My wife and I both got the DanDan noodles and could have licked the bowl after we were done. We also do got two different kinds of sushi and both were very good. My son got the Sweet & Sour Chicken and he loved it. Golden Koi is very authentic and the owner and staff are wonderful. I forgot to take a photo of the DanDan noodles because I was so excited to eat them and didn't think about it till after lol. We will definitely be back. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon with my wife, were were searching for our first lunch out since Covid insanity started. We found the door locked but the open sign on. The owner quickly poked his head out of the door and told us that they were still doing takeout only. I suppose we both looked like a couple of kids who had our ice cream stolen so the owner shrugged a little and said if we didn't mind dinning out of to go boxes we could come in. What an awesome change from the 'average' sushi joint. Authentic Chinese Cuisine, some Korean flair, and the freshest sushi I have had in a long time. The staff was friendly, polite and very attentive, yet not 'hovering'. They have a good selection of beer and saki, and if you ask for 'real wasabi', they have it. They also have the green stuff you can get at any sushi place, but the REAL stuff is amazing. Fresh prepared soups, Chinese dishes, and bubble tea. This was the first visit my son and I made to Golden Koi. It will not be our last. It is a small place and very nice and cozy. It has a very good feel to it from the moment you walk in. The miso soup is the very best I have had in a long time. The sushi is also the best I have eaten here on the Northshore. It is good enough that it just might eclipse sushi found in New Orleans or Metairie. Ok, I could be overreacting since I have not, yet, eaten sushi in either New Orleans or Metairie, but the sushi was good enough to make that bold claim. I think that Golden Koi would also be a good place to take a date. It is quaint, cozy, and very personal. I know I shall be taking a date there in the not too distant future. Then there is the desert. We had the Machi, our first time trying it. We were taken back that something so simple could be so very delicious! We ordered a second serving and a different flavor. You cannot compare the different flavors against each other because they are like night and day. Each flavor stands alone on its own merit and I am here to tell you that merit is extremely sound. Of course, the topping on this experience is the cost. I had two soft drinks and my son had two large hot sakes. We tend to eat "large" when it comes to sushi, choosing 5 different rolls, 4 of which were specialty rolls. The bill came to $90.00. That may be high to some people but we compare it to ordering the same way at another local (not to be mentioned) sushi restaurant where the bill typically runs $130.00. I would say that two people who do not gorge on sushi and do hold back on sake could come away with the exact same excellent experience for much less than what we spent. When you tally all of the above-mentioned things, of which each point is a huge plus, you owe it to yourself, your spouse, significant other, friend, or date to eat at Golden Koi. I went to three Chinese buffets before finding The Golden Koi, and am so glad the others were closed. Thank you for being open, you made my Christmas a little brighter. I should have known the meal would be exceptional by the Lambrogini parked out front. The dining area was clean, cozy and interesting. The staff was interesting and, well interested. The food came quickly and was well presented. I got the Teriaki Beef, and was amazed after my first dumpling. It was ever so slightly crunchy, and then melted in my mouth. So good, I was a bit disappointed I ate them both so quickly, and then they were gone. The beef was well seasoned with a thick, rich sauce. I focused on all of the vegatables first, which were not soggy and full of flavor. There was so much meat, I almost passed on the rice, but I forced myself to mix it with the leftover sauce and leave a little sleepy. As an after note, I could really apprieciate the ginger dressing on the salad. I never had it before, and was pleasantly surprised. The salad came late, had only iceberg lettuce, and I missed a full on nutritious banquet of rabbit food, but was full and pleased enough to leave it at that. I enjoyed the miso soup as well (even though my boyfriend claimed it was simply "ok"). I liked their fried rice. The beef used in the fried rice itself was not favorable. This place was a pleasant surprise. Not only do they have an extensive sushi menu, they also have Chinese food on the menu. I actually tried the spicy Chinese chicken. To my surprise it actually is very authentic tasting and legitimately spicy. This service at the restaurant is fairly attentive and it seems like they had a lot of takeout business while I was having my dinner there. This sushi place has quickly become my favorite on the Northshore. The rolls are big and well worth the price. They are high quality, fresh, and delicious--everything that is important in a good sushi roll. Also, I tried the fried rice, and it was delicious. We got way too much food for the table, but everything was just as good leftover the next day. The employees are always friendly, and one of the servers is the sweetest waitress I've ever had. She walks every customer to the door when they are leaving, and she is so attentive and polite. She is also creative and detailed with the sushi plates, and really goes above and beyond. You can tell they love what they do here and value their customers. This is a great place to pick up some to go sushi or grab a quick bite to eat! The owner had to tell the chef what was in each roll. We ordered a roll without Siracha, but it was definitely on there. I cannot speak to the quality of the Chinese food.
