Brumby Hall & Gardens, home of the Gone With the Wind Museum, in Marietta, GA Arnoldus Brumby built the house in 1851 when he was appointed superintendent of the Georgia Military Institute. Between 150-200 students were enrolled each year until the start of the Civil War in 1861, at which point many cadets and instructors left the join the Confederate cause. Brumby departed as well, serving as Colonel in the 14th Georgia Regiment. In 1864, Union troops, commanded by Union General Willitam T. Sherman, destroyed all of the buildings at GMI except for the house, which they used as a hospital. The Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum houses an original collection of GWTW memorabilia relating to the book and movie. Original costumes, conceptual artwork, signed first editions, movie scripts and hundreds of GWTW artifacts on display. read more

This museum contains all memorabilia related to the Gone with the Wind novel as well as the film. You will be able to see original costumes from the movie such as Scarlett's bengaline dress she wore on the honeymoon and a coat jacket worn by Rhett. There are also numerous reproductions of Scarlett's gowns including the green dress she wore at the barbecue and the burgundy gown she wore to Ashley's barbecue. Little known fact about Margaret Mitchell: she was a lifelong philanthropist and donated funds for African Americans to attend medical school in the Atlanta area. *Experience during COVID-19* If you're a fan of Gone With the Wind, this small gem of a museum is a can't miss site. Depending on how much time you like to view and read displays, you should plan for at least an hour. It's $7 for a adult ticket and you will need to wear a face mask during the entirety of your time within the historic house that is home to the museum. The entire bottom floor of the historic home is dedicated to the museum and a small gift shop. You will find quite an assortment of film memorabilia and vintage souvenirs, Margaret Mitchell artifacts, history on the making of the movie, and info on the leading stars throughout the space. My personal favorite was the entire room dedicated to gorgeous life-size replicas of many of the costumes Viven Leigh wore to portray Scarlet O'Hara. The true show-stopper in this room is the only original outfit worn by Leigh - the Bengaline Gown. (if you're a fashion lover, it's worth visiting the museum just to see this dress.) Overall, it's a very interesting museum to learn about the history of the novel, iconic film, and famous figures tied to the Gone With the Wind legacy. read more

If you're a huge fan of "Gone with the Wind" like I am (read the book 2 times, watched the movie almost at least once every year if not more), then you will absolutely love the museum! They even have one of the original gowns worn by Vivien Leigh as well as other amazing one of a kind pieces and memorabilia owned by the cast members. Also, they have a room full of replicas of Scarlett's gowns, which was just breathtaking. It is definitely worth a visit when you're in town! I wanted to stay in this room forever. If you watched the movie, if you read the book, if you did both, multiple times, and you liked it, you will like what you see and learn by visiting the Gone With The Wind Museum in Marrietta! After having watched the movie many times, I finally dove in and read the book, all of it! To me, the movie followed the book very closely. But I learned so much that was left out of an already very long movie and it definitely added to the overall experience. We decided to visit the Margaret Mitchell House on one of our trips to Atlanta, and when I learned about the Gone With a the Wind Museum, we decided to make it a GWTW day and see both. This museum is relatively small but packs a big punch of fascination for its size. It has displays of lots of memorabilia including copies of the book in many different languages. We easily entertained ourselves wandering around and looking at items and reading descriptions of what was on display. It is a fun way to spend a couple of hours without a lot of walking as with larger museums. read more

Wow! Didn't know this museum was right in my neighborhood! What a gem! Small exhibit of Gone with the Wind movie and book memorabilia. Artwork, photographs, costumes, some set pieces, Margaret Mitchell letters, and cast signature board are displayed throughout the historic Brumby Hall. This museum is located on the Marietta square, near the train tracks. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but when you walk in it is filled to the ceiling with items from the set, Margaret Mitchell's items, memorabilia, etc. There were even a few costumes from the set. Gone with the Wind is one of my favorite movies, so I adored the museum. However, if you aren't a big fan, this museum definitely isn't a "must see." read more

Stage props and costumes that were or might have been "allegedly" or we mentioned that might have been in the film. Per the other reviews, understand that this is a private collection on display in a small space on the Marietta Square. You are not entering the Smithsonian or a multi-million dollar, studio-run museum in Hollywood. As such, no, you are not going to see ballroom sets or dozens of original costumes. What you WILL see is well worth your $7, though! As well as at least one dress actually worn by Vivian Leigh and loads of 1930's-1940's movie memorabilia, you will see ACTUAL shooting scripts used in the making of the movie, including one donated by Anne Rutherford. (Rutherford also donated a tea set given to her at the premier by the mayor of Atlanta!) There are telegrams discussing various aspects of making the movie, including one saying of Vincent Price, "We can do better," and another major star of the time begging for a shot at the role of Ashley Wilkes. Lana Turner's personal leatherbound copy of the book given to her by the head of MGM is also there. Most amazing to me was the actual contract signed by Vivian Leigh! I can't believe some of my fellow reviewers didn't find this impressive. Were they reading the placards? So if you expect to sit on Rhett Butler's stagecoach or to stroke Scarlett's original red velvet dress, no, that will not happen. But if you love old movie memorabilia, pages from the Atlanta newspaper about the book and premier as perfectly preserved as they can be, and to see some of the actual telegrams, contracts and scripts that made history happen, this is definitely for you! (Warning for guys: being surrounded by so many pictures of Vivian Leigh is going to leave you HYPNOTIZED!) read more

When I visited this Museum, I was not necessarily a Gone with the Wind fan but just a huge history buff and since this movie is part of Atlanta, I wanted to see what this was all about. Okay, this museum is cool as hell because in this tiny space, they fit in sooo many memorabilia. From newspaper clippings to the dresses (not all were original from film) but still cool. The owner of the museum became friends with one of the stars of the film and that is why he was able to collect some original things such as letters and photos with autographs. This is a real gem and he spent a lot of time collecting these things, which I really appreciated. If your a GONE WITH THE WIND fan, this museum is definitely for you. Oh in terms of parking, you can park directly in front of the building but I had to go around a few times to figure out where I was going and kept passing the entrance to the parking lot but just try and figure that out on the map before coming so you can avoid frustration, read more

I start this review with a disclaimer... I am a HUGE Gone With The Wind fan! So, when my boyfriend and I were planning our road trip to North Carolina I insisted we make a pit stop in Atlanta so I could see one of the 4 (yes, there are 4) GWTW museums! That being said, I loved this museum! It was more a collection of artifacts related to the movie than anything else. But, I was fascinated by all of the pieces on display! My boyfriend, who has seen the movie but is not as big of a fan as I am, also enjoyed the museum. He works for the film industry and liked seeing all of the pieces related to the production of the film such as the continuity script. I loved having his insider knowledge as we walked through! The staff at the museum were super friendly and knowledgeable. They have great selection of items in their gift shop, especially considering how small the museum is. Thankfully, the staff helped me decide between a couple of items! Then they gave us a great recommendation for lunch! My only complaint is that there isn't any parking so we did have to drive around for a bit to find a space. Other than that, I give this museum an A+! read more

It is definitely something that you may want to check out. However, do not expect an actual full blown museum with hoards and hoards of original items from the actual movie. Although there were several original items, it was far too few for something as big as the Gone With the Wind movie. The museum for the most part are full of donated paintings from fans of the actors in the movie and other knick knacks dedicated to the movie such as collectible plates, mugs, etc. I was not interested to see the same poses of the actors stamped over and over in an endless array of these knick knacks. The museum itself is small. It cant be more than 2000 sq. ft. So you can literally finish touring it (unguided btw) in less than 30 minutes. The most interesting part is seeing the few original items that I have mentioned, the different printed copies of the book from all over the world, some of the poster, and ... that's about it. If you mention that youre a student, they dont even ask for an ID so it was about $6.50 a person for us. It was cute and all, but nothing too special. However, like i said, spare a bit of change to check it out. On the other hand, if you are a true Gone With the Wind fanatic, then maybe this place is the place for you since you can see all kinds of collectible items you may or may not already have. read more

When I told my mom we were going to 3 Gone with the Wind Museums (this being the second) she told me "I don't want to pay to see someone odd collection of memoribilia"....oops, sorry Mom! That's what this was. It is cheap ($7) and the most redeeming thing is that it actually has the REAL DRESS from the movie!! This is NOT a reproduction, which was amazing :) I had to go, I'm glad I went.....but overall, if you're not a real GWTW fan you should go grab a starbucks near the parking lot and wait for people to finish :) read more

I wasn't expecting much, and nothing much is what I found. I am not a fan of the book or the movie, so to be fair this wasn't going to rank high for me, but I had hopes of at least being interested. What I found was a very small museum with some glass cases of movie memorabilia, a large collection of copies of Gone With the Wind from various countries, a small collection of props and costumes and quite a few pieces of what I can only call fan art. It was clean, cool and quiet, which was nice on a warm day when the square was packed due to a festival. $7 entry is not expensive, yet I somehow feel like it was too much. I do believe that a true GWTW fan may get some enjoyment from a visit, but can't recommend a visit for anyone else. read more

Pretty disappointing exhibits. Some of the prints and photos on the walls are lacking captions so it's not clear what or who you're looking at. Also, at the previous location of this museum, I think there was a continuously-running video of the opening night of GWTW in downtown Atlanta in 1939, which is quite dramatic. There was no video this time, just prints and some artifacts/costumes from the movie. We pulled up that video on YouTube ourselves, during our visit to this museum. Overall, pretty sparse in my opinion, especially since we paid admission and had expectations to see more. Maybe our disappointment was due to lack of information about this museum upfront. read more

This tourist from NYC went with a Groupon and I was treated with the same respect and affection as anybody else who entered. I had an international guest who was very impressed with a museum that was not gargantuan which means you are never overwhelmed or left with that feeling that you need another occasion to survey all the lovely items that are very symbolic. Further, the lovely lady who was at the front desk exuded Southern charm and dignified poise. I took a house guest here who had a real interest in Gone with the Wind. So do I, I read the book multiple times and love the film. See my other review about the Margaret Mitchell House. I think this museum did wonderful justice to the life of Margaret Mitchell, and details of the film WITHOUT the very unfortunate moralizing and preachy tone the Margaret Mitchell House has taken on. For example, this place very objectively shares about the segregation that actress Hattie McDaniel faced with the Atlanta premiere of the film. The Margaret Mitchell House guides openly disparage the South and its residents to visitors. I much prefer the tone of this beautiful museum, which presents historical documents and FACTS, without editorializing about how bad bad bad the Old South was. They don't make you feel ashamed if you love the film and/or the book. Truly fascinating artifacts and a great gift shop! Friendly staff as well. First rate experience. My guest loved it as well. I loved seeing the authentic pieces from the movie as well as letters Margaret Mitchell wrote. The gift shop was great, though a bit overpriced! The GWTW museum in Marietta, Georgia is a must see destination whether you are a Windy fan or just interested in historical artifacts. I travelled to Marietta in June of 2014 to see the museum and had a personal guided tour with Dr. Christopher Sullivan, the owner of the artifacts. There is an extensive collection of memorabilia including the original Bengaline honeymoon gown worn by Scarlett in the movie. I came home from the trip and watched the movie again with my family and loved every minute of it! Check it out. read more

If you're a fan of GWTW, then you will enjoy this museum. Lots of interesting movie memorabilia, some repro and some original. Great gift shop with a good supply of books on the movie and the life of Margaret Mitchell. As another reviewer stated, this is a private collection and not a multi-million dollar, studio-run museum in Hollywood. For a private collection on prime property in a major suburb of Atlanta, they've presented and organized it well. As a Georgia native (and a former museum professional), I'm sorry it's taken me this long to visit as I believe it's been operating now for 14 years. I would have given it five stars, but it lost a star for the less-than-knowledgeable staff at the front desk. If you're going to work in any museum, especially at the front desk, you should have at the very least a decent knowledge of the subject matter and not tell patrons "it's in the brochure" when they ask a question (even if it is in the brochure). You're working with the public - be friendly and responsive, no matter how inane the question. Also, if you're going to complain about patrons' questions to another employee, do so in the break room and out of ear-shot of other guests. Again, you're working with the public. In the South. Mind your manners. Lastly, patrons, please be advised of the parking situation: there is a small parking lot opposite the railroad tracks and beside Starbuck's. Don't make the mistake I did and accidentally park in the Starbuck's lot or your car will be booted. (Apparently Starbuck's here doesn't mind paying for a towing company to sit and monitor the parking lot. Or is it the city who provides that service? I don't know. And their "warning" signs are the small ones that look like the "parking lot under 24 hr surveillance" ones, so I didn't bother to read them completely. Silly me!) I used the directions on the museum website and bing maps before leaving my house, and google maps enroute and STILL could not find Mill Street which is the entrance to the museum parking lot. If I had just gone east on Marietta Pkwy instead of coming in from the west, I would have found it. As it was, Mill "Street" looks like a driveway, the green street sign was obscured by trees, and the parking lot itself was also obscured by a nice row of trees along the sidewalk fronting Marietta Pkwy. Not that I'm complaining about the trees, but there was NO signage whatsoever directing anyone to the museum parking lot. I've always had a good sense of direction, but I've never flat out missed my destination like that before. At least the guy who'd booted my car took $25 off my $75 parking ticket. I thoroughly enjoyed the Gone with the Wind Museum and seeing the little place where Margaret Mitchell sat by the front window and typed her book. The little gift store has one of kind Gone with the Wind merchandise and the music box figurine of Scarlett (in the dress she wore to the barbecue) that I purchased there will always be a treasured reminder of that outing with my sisters. read more

Went to the GWTW Museum in Marietta while on a trip to Atlanta this week. Ran across the museum while hitting the antique shops--great shop across from the museum. My wife is a huge GWTW fan so I stopped in. The place was interesting to see all he items of GWTW from around the world. I will have to bring my wife to Marietta to see this museum. It has one of the original dresses that Vivian Leigh wore and a very admirable reproduction of the crimson dress--my wife's favorite. I like GWTW, but I am more a history buff. The GWTW museum and the regional history museum next to it were a welcome break from the shopping. read more

I can't believe I've never been here before. A friend took me shopping in the Marietta square today. We took a lunch break from shopping and went to the GWTW museum. It was so interesting. Not exactly what I thought it would be, but a pleasant surprise. I never knew GWTW had, and still has, such a following outside the US. It is not a quick run through. To get the full benefit of this museum, take the time to read and read. Newspaper articles, letters, reviews, etc. give you a glimpse into history. It is hard to imagine the impact this book and movie had on Atlanta, and the South. Sad to see the changes that had to be made to advertising, programs, etc. for Hattie McDaniel. But it is history--we learn from it. Loved seeing the original honeymoon dress. Wish I had the feathery burgundy gown. I don't know why. I just love it. This book and movie are so much a part of our history. I hope this museum is around for the next generation. I plan to bring my daughter when she is a bit older. read more
