I have had an excellent pie from here and on the strength of this I have been back in twice. The last two visits, the pies were OK.

The roll was crunchy, the pâté was notable, and veggies were fresh, but I think it missed the mark a bit by having fresh carrot and not Do Chua. Also, the roast pork was Woolworth deli standard. It would be nice to have something a bit more flavourful. Not a bad start though.

I asked when the display would be filled and was told as they are made fresh it would be around 10am. I often feel guilty leaving places without a purchase and had come this far so what the hell! I decided on the cinnamon scroll and Nutella dobundt (baked donuts). I envisioned microwaving their staleness away but this never came to be. When I was given my tray it was very heavy and the bottom was warm from the food. Travelling back home gave plenty of time for my mouth to water over the inviting, homely, cinnamon aroma filling my car. Eating with a cuppa and fresh fruit; the scroll was incredibly soft and fluffy with a slightly caramelised base and good filling ratio. The Nutella dobundt was equally as fresh despite not eating it until the afternoon. Didn't indulge on the Nutella. Just the right amount. Cake texture with a dusting of donut sugar. I must return when the store is full. So far I'm impressed.

I've been…read morewanting to try a meat pie speciality spot since I landed in Sydney; this was my first official one. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:30pm). There was a small queue but it moved fast. Over 50 flavours to choose from with most costing between $7.00 to 8.20. The pies come out piping hot. There's about three tables outside so very limited seating. Interesting that they have a for sale sign up on the window. - Drunken beef steak ($7.00 AUD) - this was my savoury pie choice. I found the sauce overly sweet and lacked flavour. - Apple & mango ($7.00 AUD) - for my second pie, I tried a sweet one. Pretty standard except this one they serve cold. Mangoes were sweet but only came on top. Inside is all apple slices. - Scallops & prawns ($8.20 AUD) - nice that you get real whole pieces of scallop. - Lobster, prawns and barramundi ($8.20 AUD) - this is their #1 seller. It reminded me of clam chowder but in pie format. - Lambs fry ($7.00 AUD) - my uncle preferred this one to the spaghetti bolognese. - Spaghetti bolognese ($7.00 AUD) - actual spaghetti inside which is unique. I think eating a whole one is a bit too much. - Kangaroo teriyaki ($7.00 AUD) - with leeks and mushroom. Decent enough but I'm still on the hunt for a satisfying pie experience.

We called ahead and booked a table for a medium sized group. When we turned up there weren't too many customers (alarm bells should have been ringing but we continued anyway). The chicken was awesome - cooked perfectly and on top of a big arancini ball which was full of flavour. Unfortunately everyone else was pretty disappointed with their meals. Gravlax salad was covered in salt for some reason, they'd renamed meatloaf as 'compressed pulled pork' which caught out a few people, and their wedges were completely inedible and soggy. We actually sent all the wedges back and the staff vented about how the good wedges were expensive so they bought the cheap ones and you just can't expect any better than that. They threw them in the oven a bit longer but basically they came back hotter but still inedible. On the plus side though you can take your receipt to the cellar door next door (Gartlelmann Wines) and get 10% off.

They also had a McDonalds across the road which usually takes a bit of custom away. We were unimpressed with the food. The pies were OK and the pastries were a bit on the small size but OK. An odd indicator was that there were no birds around to eat the pastry...I hoped they weren't in the pies On the positive side, we were able to get a parking spot, and somewhere to sit down. The tables were wiped down regularly and most of the customers wore masks. We won't be back in a hurry as there are plenty of small cafes on and off the main drag that have better quality food and are value for money.

I've given this place 3 attempts over the last 12 months and the coffee is good, menu is typical, but reliable and the servers every time made me feel like I was an inconvenience. Through picturesque Australian bush and coastal breezes, we arrived at Lakehouse Cafe for lunch. I'll be upfront: I wasn't expecting much. We noticed that most venues in the area have a weekend surcharge and Lakehouse is no different. It did cost us $2 more per person to eat here on a Saturday. Did it bother us, no? Would it bother others? I'm sure it might and hence I'm telling you about it now. There weren't many staff on duty and we were some of the last of the lunch crowd to arrive. They easily accommodated our table of 6 and we were happily sat in the corner overlooking the river. While we waited for lunch we waxed lyrical about how the space could be converted into a beautiful weekender. Their menu is part bistro / part cafe. I opted for the grilled barramundi with an Italian tomato sauce and roast kipfler potatoes. With two gluten intolerant diners, this dish was our salvation from an afternoon of regret and pain. I also took a breath expecting regret upon ordering a flat white here but surprisingly it was quite a satisfying cup of coffee. Less foam than others but this was actually perfect for me. A definite winning selection amongst our group and a venue I'd gladly return to for a casual, slow-paced and indulgent holiday meal.
